My 2023 AT is in for service of a fussy door handle. The service center called and said they are replacing the faulty mechanism and want to do the other three doors as a preventative measure. It sounds like a known problem, and they want to avoid the hassle later. Great, right? Not quite—the repair will almost certainly damage the tint I had installed on each door window. Lucid says they won’t cover the replacement cost of the tint the repair job will badly damage (“l will check with my regional manager” he says). Has anyone experienced this or similar? If so, any pro tips on how to get them to cover the damage they will do while fixing their faulty parts? Thanks.

Tint being aftermarket, I don’t think they will cover it, especially if they give you advance notice.

I wouldn’t expect them to cover it; it is aftermarket.

However, depending on your relationship with the tint shop, they may be willing to reapply it at no or low cost.

My PPF/tint shop has done that for me when various components were replaced.

I can see why they wouldn't pay for fixing aftermarket modifications. I'm just curious because I've had a door handle replaced by mobile service and there was no damage to my window tint. So I don't understand why they're saying it would damage the window in any way. Of course, Frank did it, and he was really careful with everything, so maybe that makes the difference.

It wasn’t just the door handle, it was the guts/mechanism that controls the door handle. They explained that when they lift it (the mechanism) upwards, it will drag against the inside of the window. If there’s no tint, there’s no damage to the glass. But tint gets cut.

Earlier today, my service advisor sent me a text, saying that the regional manager approved reimbursement for any damage to the tint. I was pleasantly surprised because I expected something else. They proceeded with handle mechanism replacement on all four doors. Two out of the four tint films were damaged (as promised). I will have to go back to the tint shop, and I assume I’ll have to front the repair costs and seek reimbursement. However, I’m happy with the outcome. I think Lucid treated me very fairly on this; kudos to them.
