Australian raw materials firm Syrah Resources has signed a binding agreement to supply Lucid Motors with natural graphite for use in lithium-ion battery production. The graphite will be sourced from Syrah’s U.S. facility in Vidalia, Louisiana, the company announced.
Under the three-year contract starting in 2026, Lucid will purchase approximately 7,000 tonnes of graphite. The deal employs a floating price mechanism tied to a natural flake graphite index, leaving the total financial value undisclosed.
Lucid will not process the graphite directly but will utilize battery cells incorporating the material. Syrah noted that Lucid maintains supply agreements with multiple Tier 1 battery manufacturers in the U.S., with qualification processes for Vidalia’s graphite progressing among these suppliers. Currently, Lucid sources battery cells primarily from Panasonic, which manufactures them in Japan. Once Panasonic’s new plant in De Soto, Kansas, is operational, Lucid will receive cells from that facility.
Lucid produces its vehicles at its main factory in Casa Grande, Arizona, and operates an assembly facility in Saudi Arabia. This latest graphite agreement follows Lucid’s previous deal in July 2024 to secure 5,000 tonnes per year from Graphite One, contingent on the supplier commencing synthetic graphite production.
