Cost for hardware, sure but its probably marginal to have a modem that is quad band or tri band or however many band there are these days.Seems like most automakers use AT&T. I suppose like all carriers, it's just hit-and-miss on coverage. Which is why some people seem to have no problem with streaming (coverage where they drive must be fine). For me it's maddening having something as basic as car audio cutting in and out frequently.
I wonder if they could use all 3 major networks, and switch on the fly to whichever one is working at the time? Probably cost more, and take additional hardware, but might be worth it when making such a basic function so dependent on connectivity.
Or perhaps they can use the driver's cell phone connection for backup internet connectivity?
The bigger issue is negotiating a contract for each of these carriers. Its incredibly redundant to have each car have a cellular contract with three carriers. That's 3x the cost for something you are only going to be using one at a time.
