They are not only inconvenient, but a safety hazard. If you read the thread, there are three incidents, in which the liquid spilled on the driver or the lid came off.
Also, if you close your eyes it’s hard to drive, and sometimes it rains.
Yes, sometimes cups spill liquid, particularly as you take them in or out of a cup holder. This happens on all vehicles, and with all cups, and sometimes it happens on some more than others.
If a Starbucks cup lid isn’t fully on, because they messed up putting it on, do you sue the Starbucks for the cost of cleaning your vehicle if it spilled? Do you sue them if it causes an accident? No, you don’t, because it isn’t a safety issue if you caused some liquid to spill. It is incumbent upon you to maintain control of your vehicle at all times. If you cannot safely do that while drinking or using a cup holder, no matter the design, it is your fault, as you can choose not to use it while driving if you have this issue.
The car does not force the cup out of the holder and onto your pants. If you struggle to use it without spilling, don’t use it while driving; most of us do not have the same struggle.
If you read the forums, you will find even more. This can cause driver distraction and lead to accidents.
So can picking up a phone call. Ban phones in cars?
Thankfully, no one has been hurt yet. Lucid acknowledges this. Go talk to any sales or service person at Lucid.
I’ve talked to many. I’m not suggesting the design is perfect. It isn’t.
But it’s still not a safety issue.
They have changed the design in Gravity.
Gravity is a different vehicle, with an entirely different set of design constraints, so this makes sense. It doesn’t prove your point, despite you thinking it does.
