Lucid Air Cupholder NHTSA Complaint

You learned how to do it the first time you ever saw a cup holder. You just don’t remember learning it.

Once upon a time, you also learned how to walk.

We don’t always consciously remember the things we’ve learned, and sometimes our learnings need to adapt, like walking on terrain that is new to us.

Adapt. That’s what humans do best.
I am in process of adapting out of Lucid.

and then you get in your Tesla, and the second you accelerate, you spill your Celcius all over the place because the cup holders are huge and have no clamps.

Maybe a worthy comment if the car was $20,000 not up to $130,000

The cup holders in Gravity are not much better. Last week I had a standard 12oz Diet Coke can in cup holder. Went to pull it out and cup holder was very grippy and I had to pull pretty hard and when it finally broke loose, spilled all over me. Most manufacturers use a hard plastic type holder with 4 hinged adapting grippers that work very well on a variety of cup sizes and have done so for 10-15 years. Lucid decided that they wanted to use a soft rubber console tray that would not easily accept these hinged grippers and so has limited use to a much narrower size of acceptable cups/bottles/cans. Compromise Nothing?

I am all for innovation but sometimes before a company decides to do something differently, they need to think about why everyone else is doing something a certain way before deciding to do it differently.

I’ve noticed a slight twist as you remove it will help immensely based on every single well fitting cup holder I’ve ever used across many countries and vehicles.

And all the sloppy ones pour out thier contents at each stop, start, and turn.

But that is apparently only me and maybe one other person here

@borski Another student for the academy. We just need to learn the right technic.

He speaks truth. Been there done that.

willing to part with my "Lucid" mug, made by Miir for $20 obo
Black, New in box, never used (asked for one and got two)
SF bay area, no shipping. $10 if you come get it

Because expensive things are all perfect, in their default state, for every single human?

I know you think you’re making a point, and that’s fine, but I’m not trying to convince you to change your opinion or like the cup holders.

It is simply extremely clear it is not an NHTSA or safety issue, and you seem to continue to disagree.

Jokes aside, that’s fine, but it’s not changing in your vehicle anytime soon.

When lucid goes bankrupt, they can sell their cupholder design to Tesla for their flying car
Yes. The cup holders are what will bankrupt them. You should write an op ed.

Watch everyone accept the $2000 iPhone Duo not having Face ID after years of Apple saying “this is the way” for Face ID. This will be ok though because it’s Apple.

I know this thread is way longer than it should be and everyone has voiced their opinion ad nauseum...so here's another one!

for the people complaining that much about these cup holders, in honour of the recently deceased Richard Riehle, "what the hell is wrong with you people"

I've had starbucks/timmies cardboard/plastic cups in there, I've had small thermos, etc..I haven't had a problem. It is absolutely much tighter than most cup holders...but there is something about just adjusting your strength accordingly. If the physics of not knowing how to adapt your grip and strength to the situation to hold and lift a cup is difficult, then i must only assume you have many gripes about life in general.

Side note..someone in the thread mentioned the Porsche hidden cup holders. They are ATROCIOUS. They are a cute design that makes them completely hidden, but they struggle to hold anything, if the cup is filled too much, it will absolutely spill some in the car hitting the slightest bump, etc.

Do I complain about them as a gripe against the car? absolutely frigging not. Becauase the car is a joy to drive and I adapt. And they are a neat party trick. There will never be anything perfectly designed. I personally prefer the way the Lucid cup holders are designed because it makes it easy to open a soda pop can, it spills less, etc. I know they are definitely too tight for some, but that just means it's perfect for others.

They are not only inconvenient, but a safety hazard. If you read the thread, there are three incidents, in which the liquid spilled on the driver or the lid came off. If you read the forums, you will find even more. This can cause driver distraction and lead to accidents. Thankfully, no one has been hurt yet. Lucid acknowledges this. Go talk to any sales or service person at Lucid. They have changed the design in Gravity. I have learnt to live with this just like everybody else. This is not about complaining about the car for something I do not like, but raising an actual safety issue which can cause accidents. Lucid can simply offer a retrofit to alleviate this issue. I know a lot of people really love Lucid here. One incident like that can actually Kill lucid with what is going on with the company right now.

again, see Porsche's cup holders in their sports cars and they are 10000 times more "dangerous".

Honestly, you joined a few weeks ago only to crap on lucid non stop. I'm sorry you don't like your car but this vendetta is absolutely insane. even socktucker who has a buyback-ish situation going on isn't as negative or as fervent as you are.

Look at my post history and I've had issues as well, but holy hell dude. Forest from the trees.

Hyperbole doesn’t make it true. There is simply no universal standard for cup holders or cups for that matter. Contents can spill in any car when the two are incompatible. I know what types of cups do and don’t fit the cupholders in all of my cars and adjust. I do that not because I love my cars and their manufacturers, but simply because I’ve accepted the fact that it’s not a big deal and only a safety hazard if I choose to ignore the laws of physics.

By that metric, every single cup holder in every single car that has ever been sold is a safety hazard.

I don't think I've ever owned a car (and it's been quite a few over the past 30+ years) that had a cup holder that didn't at some point end up with drinks spilled or lids popping off of cups.

It took me about 60 seconds to figure out how to safely pull openbcans and cups out of the Air's cup holders.

For anyone who can't figure that out, there are solutions which have been available for decades...
