Living with the Lucid Gravity: A Tesla Owner’s Journey

I just noticed a couple issues that stood out I’ve seen over and over. Like the phone as key. And I consistently hear the “app sucks”. Some saying I don’t even use the app. Yikes.

I just can’t imagine a car that can’t do what the Tesla app does now.

Like a really big one is doggy mode. But it’s dog mode that I can check on them live with the phone. I set a timer for every 10 minutes (sometimes shorter if they are in the sun). That’s super important. I don’t trust any tech and need to monitor it.

I can check all the cameras on the car.

I’ll be driving on the road talking to my wife at home. She wants me to stop somewhere. She sends the address from Google Maps on her phone to the car while I’m driving. Poof I’m on the way.

I book a service appt. A day later the app is updating me when the parts will be available for the appt.

It just goes on and on and the app is a major part of an enjoyable experience. And they keep coming up with stuff.

Can the Lucids do that? I doubt it based on what I’ve read. And the Tesla App rarely ever fails.

I really wish the Lucid would catch up.

I have to choose, they both have their pros and cons.

I would like to see the OPs Pro list.
sounds like you should just get a Tesla then. The app is not as feature rich as what Tesla can offer.

I did. I just got my 4th after canceling the Lucid. I’m just agreeing with OP on some points.

It’s very odd that Lucid is so cutting edge in one aspect and so far behind on others.

Because a perfect car doesn't exist. We as consumers can weigh the differences for our own use case and make decisions. These two companies can co-exist, but really what is tiring is how often posters come in here and want a Lucid that has all the UX of Tesla but discount why Lucid is special. The space, comfort, luxury, and drive is why people are buying Lucids over Tesla.

These are one issue you made sound like three. “Key not working” is a paraphrase or “fob not responding” which is essentially the same as “doors not unlocking when you approach.”

For which, I repeat for the fifth time now, there is a key fob update required for service to perform which fixes this, provided you have upgraded to the latest version of software on the car.

So, to your point: this is fixed. You just haven’t gotten it fixed yet.

Works completely fine for me. I understand some people have issues, but “failing to function properly” is an overstatement. My wife literally uses it daily.

Does not happen in my car, but if this is happening for you you should definitely call service. It’s not a widespread issue.

You named 3. One is fixed. One isn’t a problem for many owners, and is dependent on where you go, and will be fixed by the addition of AA/CarPlay. One may be a hardware problem unique to your vehicle.

Okay.

Because they can just buy a Model S and relabel it a Lucid Air and be done? Got it.

Every single auto brand, no matter what choices they make, has some kind of teething issues while they grow up. Tesla did not get to its level of software today over the last two years. They got there over the last 15 or so. And boy did it suck for a long time, and boy does it still have bugs.

I’m not crapping on Tesla, nor am I defending Lucid… I’m just suggesting that not everyone goes into buying a car with the same expectations, and the assumption that your expectations or the things that matter to you are the very same ones that will matter to everyone else is probably not as accurate as you think.

For example, there are many people who consider satellite radio to be table stakes. And are mad that Lucid’s is cellular. I… simply could not care less.

Lots of people think CarPlay is tablestakes; I know many people who won’t buy a vehicle without it. I will.

It’s fine to state your opinions, of course. It’s the presumption that your opinions are the only correct ones that I take issue with. It does not bother me, given that I know there is already a fix, that the key fob had an issue for a few weeks. I understand it bothers you; I respect that. But mine mostly worked, and this will be forgotten by the time folks get their gravities a couple weeks from now with the fobs already updated. For that reason, to me, it simply isn’t that big of a deal, being both temporary and already having a solution.

You’re allowed to think it’s a big deal.
I started with Tesla in 2018. Bugs yeah, usually on something new and cutting edge. But I never failed to unlock my car instantly. Never.

I just looked it up. Do you know how many years Lucid has been around. 18 years !!!

This is not growing pains.

If Tesla was copying / catching up on tech they wouldn’t have had nearly as many bugs. They had bugs because they were creating evolving so many new things. And even the buggy versions are freaking amazing.

How is your Dashcam working?

I’ve upgraded my cars just to get a better audio system. Meaning they are really important to me. I keep reading Lucid has issues with the quality of the audio system. Is that new tech too?

It’s just weird.

Tesla introduced the camera driver monitoring over the past few years. I’ve never had a single issue with it. Yet Lucid appears to.

Not gonna lie - I have demoed that feature a half dozen times for my arrested development friends - I’m pretty juvenile myself. 😜

I’ve noticed with many of my bigger purchases (especially cars) - I insist on getting all the features and upgrades, use most of them once, then never think about them again. In my Tesla, I never use the browser, or lightshow, or Steam video games, or Netflix. Ok, it’s cool that these exist, but it’s really wasted on me anyway. I think it’s way more critical to make sure all of the touch points that get used multiple times per day work correctly without fail - doors, navigation, charging, profiles, radio. I think this is where Lucid needs to spend a lot of time, money, and intense focus, just so that these things are no longer an issue for anyone. Until then, it’s just a negative feedback loop of repetition that scares plenty of people off of the brand. Yeah, they are working on it - but these are still mentioned in every review and constantly on the forum - not a good look.

There is some truth to that and some not. Basic things should be rock solid.

Phone key should be flawless. I’m not expecting farts to work. The audio should be jaw dropping amazing. Is it?, I keep hearing it’s not. Navigation should be flawless, doesn’t sound like it, but I do hear complaints on Teslas too, but as far as I know it uses Google Maps and you just can’t get much better than Google Maps IMHO. ETA is near perfect for me). Sending address from any app that supports locations to the car seems almost fundamental to me now. It’s such time saver / stress saver.

If it was only the goodies on top, I don’t think you’d see lists like the OP has. OP sounds a lot like how I’d react and why I elected to not go with a Lucid (yet).

With so many things you have trigger point, a point that something crosses the line. And once it does. You look for mow flaws. You looks for justifications of why your pissed. Why you didn’t see this coming. Why is others not seeing it as you are.

Like I know my new X might still get the vibration issue and rear tire inner wear. But that doesn’t cross the line for me. If FSD started failing on me and getting locked out of my car (which does happen) it might cross that line.

BTW I’m out at breakfast with the puppies in the car and checking on them via my phone right now. That is luxury at its finest. It’s also fun to show off our puppies on the phone.

I don’t use most of those either.

But the games and farts get kids attention. And kids gets the parents attention. “daddy when are we getting a Tesla like my friend Tommy has, it is so cool”. That’s why Tesla puts those things in.

But I do use Netflix occasionally and love it. I don’t charge on the road often.

That's why I want a Lucid with the software and reliability of a Tesla. :p
I know some people will say Teslas are unreliable but I think it's mainly the S/X that are garbage. My Model 3 has only been to the service center once in 100k miles 7 years and that was for stuff they should have caught if they did pre-delivery inspection (it sounds like Lucid also doesn't do real PDI.)
This forum is saving me a lot of money and hassle. I'll just keep my car until it breaks or the perfect car gets released (Lucid Earth? BMW iX3?)

Totally disagree. I think the 3 is a toy. Had a 3 performance one. New ones are probably a lot better. I think the new Y is excellent, especially for the money ~$50k. I had a 2019 X, a 2022 S and a 2025 X. Not a single service visit. They are absolutely awesome. Only issue has been very slight vibration at 40 mph on the first 2. Annoying that I know it’s there and shouldn’t be. but really only I even ever notice. Passengers do not.

I add nice mats and sunshades to all of them. Makes them all more plushy because it kills sound reflections. A closing sunroof would be better and I’ve had before. But after a while I forget I have a sunroof that opens in any car in the past.

2019 X I did hit a deer. Wished car would have seen it before I did. It might today. But zero issues getting it repaired. Paid out of pocket. No delays, very reasonably priced. Non Tesla body shop but certified was excellent. And nearby.

Yep, I'm itching for a new car but I don't actually need one.
Right now the list is:
Lucid Gravity
Tesla Model Y Performance (Assuming Tesla fixes the godawful NVH. I just wish they'd also fix the charging performance)
2026 BMW iX3
Rivian R2 (if by some miracle it charges better than the R1)

I know you are going to buy a gravity. 😉😉😉. The bugs are being squashed. Have you test drive it?

That was legit what my kids were complaining about this weekend as I swapped out my Model X → Gravity. No easter eggs! No more games and "entertainment" on the back screen! I told them they can drive themselves on their own road trips if they wanted, otherwise I'm prioritizing my own sanity and satisfaction over 10-year old mobile games that the car happens to run.
Rather play Mario Kart World on the Switch 2!

18 years? 😂 Lucid started as a battery R&D company, not a carmaker. Stop rewriting history to dunk on a brand you clearly don’t understand. But hey, glad your sound system upgrades give you the confidence to make up timelines.

Your posts belong in a Tesla forum, not here.

Not yet. I'm sure I'll love it but the whole point of an EV is that it shouldn't need service center visits.
It doesn't sound like the bugs are being squashed very quickly. I kind of wonder what the software team has been doing for 10 months. How bad were the December cars?
At this point the iX3 seems most likely, looks like BMW made a fancier Model Y with much better charging.

That's not possible right now. The key neither unlocks nor locks the door. It doesn't unlock when I approach it either. Furthermore, even when I have the key in my hand, the door doesn't unlock when I touch it.
The Gravity Dream Edition that I picked up on Wed has had no problem recognizing the FOB, presenting door handles, opening doors, or shifting into gear except once when I had sat car a while and the I had to nudge the key to wake it so I could shift into gear… thats it… came with latest sw. So far so good on most of the issues others have had. Have not needed to double open the frunk… works fine on first push. Drove home using Dream Drive Pro and found it to work very well. So far so good.
