Near the end of our older Gravity's recent stay at the Service Center, the car finally coughed up the Vibe LED light strip malfunction I had experienced several times: the first 18 inches of the passenger-side dashboard strip shining bright white at maximum intensity while the car was in "Drive" at night when it should have been turned completely off and when the rest of the LED lights were set to a mellower color. It turned out to be a software issue that required a technician to reprogram the strip. The car was running version 3.4.17 at the time.

Last week the mobile tech replaced the rear hatch latch in our newer Gravity due to the hatch reopening itself when it was closed by power operation. When that happened I had to close the hatch manually, and it did not always engage the lock fully. On several occasions the hatch had begun opening and then froze about a third of the way up. The mobile tech thought the latch mechanism might be starting to fail, although the freezing during opening suggested to him it might also be a software issue. Today the hatch again refused to engage the lock when closing and reopened automatically. It did this through four tries, so I again had to close the hatch manually. Software version 3.4.4 had been downloaded yesterday afternoon, so the car was running the latest software.

Also, our newer Gravity has recently been presenting only black screens for several minutes when getting into the car. It will not respond to a reboot command (X/mic/brake), so you just have to sit and wait for a few minutes before the system reboots itself (indicated by the backlit bear image coming up on the glass cockpit) and you can get underway. This happened several times in the week before the 3.4.4 update and has happened once since.

These cars are not yet up to normal standards of reliability for everyday use.

Our older Gravity was in the Service Center for over 3 weeks recently, mostly for software issues. One of the issues they supposedly fixed was the right side of the dashboard LED accent light strip staying on at night when the car is in "drive" mode -- and staying on in a different color and at higher intensity than the door LED strips. Our mobile tech thought it was a hardware issue with the strip, but the Service Center said it was an intermittent miscalibration in the software that controlled that segment of the LED strip and that they corrected it by recalibrating the strip.

Tonight, a week after the car's return to us, the problem returned. It's annoying as hell to drive at night with a strip of bright white light glaring in your peripheral vision. And it does not go away with a software reboot.

Again, the software in these cars is still not stable and remains endlessly annoying. If they still cannot get the Gravity software reliable over a year after its release, I truly fear for the Earth launch and Lucid's future.

The good news is 3.5 is out. Let’s hope it fixes this bug plus many other bugs.

I still maintain you have hardware issues, not software. This has still never happened to us.

That's not a software issue. That’s a faulty LED strip. Needs to be physically replaced. The Service Center is wrong. That’s a very very common problem with LED strips in general. One bad led causes the rest in that particular chain to malfunction.

I work with LED strips and have programmed for them before.

Lucid should probably exchange you with another one especially when you ordered 3 of them. I feel bad for you.

Btw, are you selling your Black Gravity ? I saw on cars.com 😌

You may well be right. However, the Service Center insists it's not, even though the problem finally occurred on one of their own night-time test drives. I told the Service Center that our mobile tech says it's a hardware issue, and I told them that several people on this forum who know this technology and have seen the earlier photos also say it is a hardware issue.

I suspect that the real issue is that, according to our mobile tech, it requires the removal of the dashboard, and that is a two-person job that takes several hours, and the Service Center just doesn't want to fool with it for an intermittent problem. The dashboard has already been removed from this car once to replace a defective HUD unit, and I'm not exactly pleased with the prospect myself, as it might increase the risk of a dashboard squeak. However, it would just be added to the sound of a bottle rolling around the back floorboard every time we accelerate or brake (another problem the Service Center proclaimed fixed at the last visit), perhaps creating an interesting "wall of sound" effect.

Or not.

I'm not selling it. After declaring it totaled, the insurance company turned it over to a third-party salvage outfit. Other than the air bags deploying, there was no damage aft of the A pillars and, as far as I could tell, the battery pack was still fully functional (as the A/C, sound system, screens, etc., were all still working when I went several days later to the tow yard to retrieve personal belongings, and the Lucid app continued to show the car powering up and only experiencing phantom drain for days afterward).

Maybe it got repaired and put up for auction?

New issue that began last evening with our newer Gravity: the car wouldn't respond to the key fob to unlock as I approached the car. Finally, after hitting the unlock button numerous times it finally extended the driver door handle but none of the other handles until several more attempts. We got in and went to dinner, but when I was in the restaurant I noticed the car had not powered down due to the headlights remaining on in the parking lot. I had to go out and manually turn them off.

This morning I approached the car with the key fob, and again the car behaved as it had the evening before. I rebooted the software, but the behavior continued. So I changed the fob battery, although it was a fairly new battery. The doors then unlocked. I was getting ready to wash it, so I put the key fob in a Faraday pouch. The doors remained unlocked, and the car would not power down. I turned the lights off manually and began washing the car. For the next half hour of so, the car remained powered up with the audio and the A/C running and the door handles still extended even though there was no signal of the presence of the key fob.

I then called Customer Service. While I was on the phone with them, the car began unlocking and relocking over and over while I was standing right next to it with the key fob and doing nothing. They saw on their end that the car was powered up and tried to connect me to the Miami Service Center but could not get through.

We were planning on driving this car with a friend to a test drive we have scheduled for a Rivian R1T late this afternoon. As I'm not sure how the Gravity will behave, we're going to take another car which, unfortunately, means another Lucid and another roll of the dice on whether we'll get there without incident.

I was doing this test drive just out of curiosity. Now I'm not so sure that we be my only agenda.

Given your litany of problems I think you should just do a hard reset every time you get in the car until the software improves. I have been fortunate with my DE, but it has not been flawless. My Sirius occasionally disconnects, requiring a soft reboot, which is irritating because I usually don’t realize it’s not working until I’m moving. And yesterday my car didn’t want to wake up in my driveway after I had just parked it. The fob took several presses to unlock it.

I will add that the software has been improving since the fall. The screen boot up is much faster.

This happens in my Gravity as well (see pic). Not super frequently, but it does occasionally happen. Appreciate your explanation re: recalibration. In my situation, the light eventually goes out five or ten minutes into my drive. I’m on software version 3.4.4, and haven’t been presented with the 3.5 update yet. Hoping that may sort the issue without a service visit (although your experience makes me think it needs to go on my punchlist for a service visit).

It's interesting that your LED strip is behaving exactly as ours: same bright white, same portion, and same length of the strip. (In fact, I thought you had just reposted my photo until I noticed the view out the windshield.)

Night before last, the errant strip turned itself off after about 10 minutes of driving. Other occasions have lasted longer, including one series where it occurred three nights in a row and lasted the entire drive each time. This has happened both before and after the 3.4.4 update . . . and also since the Service Center supposedly fixed it.

UWB ranging relies on a time-of-flight measurement, not signal strength. Putting the key in a Faraday bag likely prevented the car from making a range measurement.
Next time, walk away from the car until it locks, then put the key in a bag if you wish to.

@hmp10 I can’t believe you are sticking it out with Lucid at this point. Who cares if it looks great and drives great (when it works) if you have to put up with this nonsense constantly - no way I could deal with this level of never-ending frustration. It really shouldn’t be acceptable to anyone.

I did what I always do when I wash any of our Lucids. I unlock the car with the key fob to extend the mirrors so that I can clean around them first, and then I stick the fob in the Faraday pouch to lock the car, retract the handles, fold the mirrors, and turn off the lights. This newer Gravity has always done so until today.

I know. It was an interesting afternoon. I held a reservation for a Launch Edition Rivian R1S for over four years back when I also had a reservation for the Air Dream Edition. I had decided to take whichever car made it to market first, and Lucid beat Rivian to the punch. I've (mostly) loved Lucid cars ever since but never quit wondering about a Rivian. As our Air is now out of the 4-year stretch of its warranty with no sign of the extended warranty program Lucid once teased, I thought now might be time to take a look at a Rivian. In part this is because I'm getting tired of always having at least one Lucid in the middle of a bout of dysfunction.

I learned to drive on a pickup and have had a couple over the years that I really enjoyed. So I thought I'd see what the state of the art is today in EV pickups. Frankly, all three of us were shocked. The Rivian rode like a buckboard, and even when turning corners on residential streets, the thing creaked and clunked like something I remember from the 1960's. This was a $117K vehicle -- priced about the same as a well-optioned Gravity GT -- and I couldn't believe how primitive the seats were compared to the Gravity: short seat bottoms with no thigh extension, limited adjustment range, plastic-looking vegan leather. The steering wheel even at the lowest setting was much too high for both of us test drivers (5'7" and 6'1") and blocked some of the binnacle view. Even at the lowest ride height of 8.5" (crouch mode, I think the rep called it) I could barely get in and out of it with my short frame.

It takes driving other new vehicles to keep awareness alive of just how amazing the room, ride, comfort, quiet, handling, and structural solidity of Lucids are.

And this infuriates me even more with Lucid's chronic software issues. We went to dinner after this test drive, and when I got back in the Gravity driver seat, it refused to come out of Entry/Exit mode. I had to adjust the seat and wheel manually before getting underway. This is our newer Gravity that has, so far, been relatively problem-free, at least compared to our older Gravity. But over the past few days, it seems as if some kind of rogue code is taking down one feature after another. Locking and unlocking has gone awry, I get constant alerts that the key fob is not detected (even with a new battery), seats will not adjust, screens will not come up for the first few minutes after getting into the car, etc.

For all the recent ballyhoo about retooling their whole software effort, Lucid software is still a total shit show.

It’s funny that the common narrative about the most important things to a potential EV buyer are range, efficiency, and price. To me, it seems the most important issue is making sure all the fundamental stuff works every time, just like the ICE cars people have been used to for decades. Who cares about those first 3 things if you have to deal with the headaches of very basic functionality on a constant basis?

You couldn’t price your Gravities low enough for me to put up with those issues, and I imagine I’m not the only one who feels that way, especially among the regular average car buyers that Lucid hopes to convert with the midsize cars.

And yet they would say they’ve fixed the problems.

I'd never had key fob problems until now.
Car'd been at SC for 2 weeks and came back with 3.4.4
Key fobs don't lock or unlock the car.
Side view cameras fail.
X-Mike-Brake resets make no difference.
By the way, SC was supposed to put on the bear logos but didn't because the car was ppf'ed.
Has anyone put on the bears after ppf and any problem?
