Is the Sanctuary Mode available without the Tech upgrade package? My search of the forums didn't give me a definitive answer. And the description of the Dynamic Ambient lighting on the website makes it even more confusing. This is something I would enjoy.
  • Dynamic Ambient Lighting: Dynamic ambient lighting transforms your vehicle's interior into a personalized, immersive environment. With a palette of customizable colors, it enhances both aesthetics and functionality. Sanctuary mode takes this experience further, enveloping you in a cocoon of tranquility inspired by California's natural wonders. You can escape into a perfectly curated oasis of light and ambiance.

Yes. But you don’t get the dynamic ambient lighting without the HUD.

Sanctuary mode doesn’t require dynamic ambient lighting, but will make use of it if it’s available.

I confirmed this with @nicktwork directly.

Thanks. I wonder what is different when dynamic lighting is available? But that ultimately won't be the deciding factor in whether we decide to wait for HUD or not.

The lights change color and have a moving effect I believe. Kind of gimmicky but also embarrassing that Lucid promoted the hell out of it along with the HUD and now can’t deliver.

The dynamic ambient lighting is bycatch; they could deliver that, were it not for the wiring harness being designed the way it is.

Anyway, six months from now or whenever the supply issue is fixed, this will be a memory.

But yeah, sucks.

@borski Do you have any info on dynamic vs. base ambient lighting? The babysitter during the demo drive was unable to answer. During the demo drive there were ambient light strips around the interior of the car and both the color and brightness were customizable. Without HUD, are those lights not there? Or are they there, but you can’t change the color and brightness? Thx!

The latter. I think @nicktwork would be the best person to clarify this.

That’s correct. While Dynamic Ambient Lighting is a great option, the base ambient lighting is also very comprehensive. It has ambient lighting in every area that the dynamic package does except for on the belt line of the doors and upper instrument panel. The base ambient lighting also includes the option to change the light color. In addition, all Gravity models include Sanctuary Mode as standard. However, we do plan a software update that will bring additional lighting features to sanctuary mode for vehicles with dynamic ambient lighting.

Just to clarify - Without HUD, there ARE some missing lights. Most of the LED strips are not there. In fact, I think the only LED strip you do get in the base package is the one "overhead" between the driver and the passenger. But the ones in the doors and along the top of the dash are not there in the base lighting package. (This is consistent with what Nick Twork states above.) Several of us have been shown an image by Lucid personnel on test drives; that image has been a bit secretively kept but I think maybe someone posted it here before. The other interior lights that are common between the packages are things like puddle lights in the foot wells and a light down in the magazine/drinks pockets in the doors. But if you are geeking out on LED strips, IIRC there is only one in the base package - the one between the passenger and driver in the overhead bit that protrudes down into the windshield.

Personally, I think it is a dramatic difference and a shame to miss them. Basically, none of the lights you see in this photo from the Gravity website are in the base package. (I circled them) They are the upper dash and door beltline lights. If the footwell puddle and door pocket lights are on in this photo, they are not very visible. But others might find these lights distracting, so I guess YMMV. But at the price point, most other luxury vehicles have some LED strip lighting that adds a bit of luxury, so I am disappointed these aren't in the base GT.

The refreshed Model X added them along with all of Tesla's line-up, although they made them 'standard' by increasing the base price. I guess I am having trouble seeing why one wouldn't want them, if they are distracting just turn it off.

I really don't understand why Lucid tied ambient lighting to optioning HUD. To my thinking, one has nothing to do with the other.

My guess is that they packaged the electronics to control the light strips into the HUD hardware--aggregating control of them into the computer controlling the HUD.

Often when dealing with microcontrollers, hardware interface ports and/or general purpose I/O pins are limited. Also the multi-wire connections can be a significant cost per foot, so minimizing the distance from the controller to the light strips can make a difference when making thousands of cars. Longer runs also have more problems with electronic noise and cross-talk.

Nick Twork already told us the answer, the common piece is the wiring harness. The HUD is not doing anything for dynamic ambient lighting.

This doesn’t answer the question. The question was “why is the lighting tied to the hud?” Your answer is effectively “because It’s wired with the HUD.” Plus a wee bit of what I read as condescension.

The "why" is presumably just cost control. Limiting the number of option combinations eases manufacturing, and I assume some marketing person decided that tying together the various features in the technology package made sense for how they wanted to market and price the vehicle.

@TahoeMichael is correct, the HUD, dynamic lighting and power outlets were tied as one option bundle for marketing purposes. Hence, it makes sense to use one wiring harness for that option package.
