I finally turned the HUD off today

What were they supposed to do? Let it languish? I think they get some credit for accepting some outside expertise to deliver what they promised. I'm sure they wish they had a time machine but they don't.
I have no problem with Lucid partnering with outside source for HUD software. My issue is that over a year ago, Lucid apparently (I am hypothesizing here) had developed the HUD hardware and a basic HUD software (non-AR capable at that time) and started selling a product that was no where near complete, hoping that their stellar software team could develop the AR piece of the software in a short time period. Fast forward a year and the software team cries “Uncle” and Lucid decide to reach out for help.

As stated, I am just guessing here. It is always possible that Lucid signed a partnership with Basemark a long time ago and they are just now announcing this partnership (hopefully due to this AR HUD being about ready for release). I think that if Lucid had the Time Machine you mentioned, they would have just contracted with an established high end AR HUD provider like who is providing HUDs to Porsche, Mercedes, etc. and would have avoided this whole HUD debacle.

Oh don't get me wrong, I think Lucid is full of it, sat around sniffing its own farts and now are in a panic. I think my Air oversold and underdelivered, too. The software is a joke, its overpriced, the luxury features are meh at best. Maybe they can pull it off, but I legit don't think they will survive the 2020's, largely because of stunts like this. At least they are admitting they had a problem though, I'll give them that.

Having said that, I'm also not sure if that was their intent to deceive anyone. It is very possible that they truly thought it would be ready soon, too. I have seen this company make bafflingly amateur mistakes (like emailing their entire customer base accidentally, or not even having a way to test mobile keys, the keyfob disaster, Chalamet, etc etc), and I am more likely to think it was over optimism about the AR HUD availability and not that it was their intent to lie about it to sell the car. AR HUD's are a niche feature anyways and I highly doubt it was the deal breaker for anyone. I don't know why they would have lied about it, ergo, I don't think they did. I think they just messed up.

Am I the only one who likes the HUD? I find that I don't have to look away from the road for anything driving-related thanks to it. Even the blind spot warning is shown there, and the next 2 nav turns
Despite it's numerous warts, I do like it. I had to get new prescription sunglasses (non-polarized) just to see it, but now that I can, I do find it useful. It's still a little tilted, but not too bad. Setting it to it's lowest display position places it about right for me, although ideally I'd like maybe 1-2 more clicks down. The field-of-view aiming is still terrible (aimed too low), and I had to lower my seat just to get my head into the field of view. As it is, I'm just on the edge of it fading out. If I move my head up slightly it fades out. But I like sitting taller in the seat and I hate going any lower. (However because of the terrible view out the rearview mirror, sitting lower makes that a bit less terrible too so there's two reasons to bite the bullet and get used to sitting lower. So many compromises to use this car.)

Question: What is "Max"? Seems useless. It is that something to do with DD? I don't use DD, only ACC.

I’ve made my peace with the HUD. After leaving it swtiched off for a few weeks, I turned it back on again. The placement was still “wrong”, the graphics in their indeterminate fuzziness still gave me a headache, and the damn thing still obstructed my view of pedestrians, bicyclists, stationary cars and trashbins put out for pickup.

Now, determined to become accustomed to something for which I paid so much, I have gotten somewhat used to it. It has stayed on, and I just drive around now, carefully, with an HUD that really doesn’t do its office all that well. But I paid for it…
This. Describes so many things about this car. It's 70% great but 30% frustrating. 2 steps forward and 1 step back at nearly every turn.

It's an exercise in daily compromise.

Max is the maximum speed DD or ACC are set to. Both will lower speed to maintain distance, but will never go above the Max speed.

So it's just a different name for SET speed. That's fine while using ACC/DD, but what's it doing there the rest of the time? Mine shows it all the time, usually just copying current speed (half a second behind). Makes no sense for it to be there all the rest of the time. It's just in the way.

It’s showing it because it’s letting you know that you can activate DD

I'd like to have the HUD, but not if it's tilted, out of focus, or projecting way to high on the windshield. Given the commentary about HUD flaws, I'm inclined to think that the right strategy for a Gravity buyer is to find an inventory model you like, and sit in that specific car to ensure the HUD works for you before deciding to buy. Otherwise, it seems like a roll of the dice as to whether you get a good or bad one, and service doesn't currently seem prepared to do anything about the bad ones.

Hmm, OK. Hopefully they find a cleaner way to do that than just duplicating the current speed in the HUD.

It's not a biggie, but it's just not a very clean or intuitive way to do it. And so far it's just always there (I assume it turns off if you're on a dirt road or something without lines?).

Maybe when off they can make it an icon with little green/red lane lines or something that suggests available vs unavailable. Duplicating current speed doesn't imply that to me, it just confusingly makes it look like it's already on.

It's there so that if you turn on ACC/DD it will automatically set to that speed. That's why it's set to current speed, by default. It's informing you that if you were to activate ACC/DD and do nothing else, it would be set to that speed.

All CC systems do that (set to current speed when initially activated). There's no need to duplicate the current speed display for that.

I’m aware. I was explaining why it was there, not saying it was my favorite feature of the car. :)

This is not always true in the Gravity. For example, I have ACC set to speed limit offset instead of current speed. I could be going 30 mph and the ACC speed could be 60 mph based on the speed limit. It’s nice to know that the car will accelerate from 30 mph to 60 mph when I engage ACC.

It’s a must-have display for me, and it’s better to have it in both modes for consistency. You always look at the same place for the speed setting for ACC, and the color indicates whether or not it’s engaged. Absence means ACC cannot be engaged. Keeping the same muscle memory regardless of ACC mode is good design.

I really wanted to keep using the HUD and I would have kept it active, but the glare from the display was too much of an inconvenience. I gave it several months, hoping I would eventually adjust to the glare and tune it out. I eventually covered up the HUD with a dark towel and I just had a lot less eye strain while driving. The juice just isn't worth the squeeze for the features it provides right now.

I live in Virginia and found that driving west, south and east were generally fine, but driving north, north east, or north west would be problematic depending on the time of day. Highway driving was less of a problem because the glare would be static and most of the time you could tune it out, but when driving on surface roads there is a lot more variability in direction which causes the glare and artifacts to constantly move and change making it much more distracting.

I love being on the cutting edge of technology and getting software updates to add new functionality and improve capabilities. If the plan all along was to iterate on the software and improve that they should have made sure the hardware provided a solid foundation and didn't get in the way. I would have been patient with software if the HUD didn't make the driving experience worse - even when off. If I could do it over again I would never had gotten the technology package.

My read is that they have been advertising a feature they didn't even had a software vendor for until now. Or maybe they were planning to develop it in house and they finally gave up.
From this and other missing features, it sounds like the old software leads had just been lying to management for years about what was getting done. At least it sounds like they'll be able to use the existing hardware? Otherwise this is going to be an expensive service campaign.
