I finally turned the HUD off today

Totally agree. To me, this is currently the biggest disappointment with the Gravity as it stands now. This is a much bigger issue to me than the slight delay on Car Play that has all the Apple Fan Boys in a tizzy over on that other thread.
I agree, with one exception: just as many Android dramatics, heh, since it comes with both CarPlay and AA. :p

But I agree that the AR HUD, to me, is a bigger issue than a few days delay on an OTA.

Well it's official, I'm in the "I turned the HUD off" camp. Lucid recalibrated my HUD and made it unusable. It became out of focus requiring you to tilt your head forward, it was so far up the windshield that it obstructed vehicles in front of you and when you had it set to the lowest angle it would cut the text off at the bottom. It went back for a second time, this time for a HUD replacement and calibration of the new unit. Lo and behold, the new one does exactly the same thing. There's no amount of adjusting the seat to get the thing in focus and rather than take it back for a 3rd recalibration which will require a minimum of 1 to 2 weeks in the shop I've just decided to give up on it. Maybe when they deliver the AR (If ever) I'll revisit it but for now, it's staying off for the foreseeable future.
I have had better luck with mine; I've had to play with my seating position a bit, but have adapted. I have it set very, very dim - It provides me with a brief speed check and upcoming directions, but it is so dim that I refer to the mapping displays for detailed turn info. I don't have to "look through it" - it is there but doesn't take my attention.

By the way, what’s “AR”?
AR = Augmented Reality. This could be incredibly useful if done well.
  • Highlight objects at night. Porsche has this now. You can see an amazing number of animals by the side of the road.
  • Imagine having lane markings at night during rainy conditions where you can sometimes barely see the road.
  • Superimpose navigation route and turns directly on the road.
  • Display what DDpro sees and the path it’s going to take on the road.

+1 for HUD being the biggest disappointment so far and with no line of sight to being done well even long term... definitely feels like not something simple software could remedy as far as I can tell

I finally turned the HUD off today. I’ve concluded that due to the vertical position not going low enough it’s too distracting and dangerous for city driving. The image is too high in my sightline and interferes with safely seeing pedestrian and cross traffic. Once I turned it off I found the car much easier and more pleasant to drive, and certainly less distracting. I miss the blind spot warning triangles a little bit, but I still have those on the mirrors.

I will probably only use the HUD for long highway trips when the blind spot warning is more useful for lane changes at high speed, and you’re looking farther down the road.

It would be great if the positioning could be fixed with a software update, but based on my understanding of the hardware that is not likely to be the case. This is one of the perils of buying a 1st generation vehicle. I hope they fix it with the next iteration. I love my Gravity, but I know Mercedes/BMW/Audi/Porsche would’ve iterated the HUD to perfection.
I turned my HUD off months ago for the same reason. The front pillar is big enough that I already struggle to see pedestrians when city driving and making left turns with cross walks. The HUD was making it worse because the projected images were registering in my brain as potential pedestrians.

My biggest issue with the HUD is that those of us who opted for the Tech Pkg payed a serious premium for this option. In fact I think there might have been a few people who paid a $15000 premium by upgrading to a Dream Edition in order to get an early delivery Gravity with the Tech Pkg.

And unlike PAAK and CarPlay/AA, which are features that were not extra cost options but we all knew would have a delayed availability, Lucid is at least posting updates about the progress of these roll outs. As for the HUD, Lucid has been radio silent for the past 6 months since the Tech Package became widely available last October.

Indeed. I asked but never got an answer.

Anyone have the issue where the HUD light detection seems to wonky and the whole rectangle lights up and fades out repeatedly? I've noticed it particularly at sunset or sunrise in low light conditions but not dark. It's blinding when the whole thing goes full bright on your windshield. So far Service has not been able to reproduce it or fix it for me.

Yep, cloudy days and in parking garages it happens pretty often

IMO they should discontinue the HUD offering. It's fairly redundant given the screen isn't blocked by the steering wheel, and it seems it's more of a distraction than anything else.

Just doesn't seem like something they should be focusing on. There are a lot more valuable features they can and should be working on instead.

They’re not focusing on it. That’s the issue these folks who have it are worried about.

I am now grateful I didn’t wait for it. The way the display is positioned above the squircle is great for me. Bummed for folks who have HUD and it’s not working well, but I wouldn’t expect Lucid to folks in it as it a unique accessory and given the early supply constraints, total guess that less than 50% of Gravity have a HUD.

I'd be shocked if it were to come out again as an option again for the 2027 model. Full me once...

They took $3,200 and currently promote it on the website as being an AR HUD with no *coming soon clauses. They need to work on it whether they like it or not or pull it from the site and give people money back who paid for it.

It they abandon it then the least they can do is design a pop in cover that stops all the obnoxious reflections it creates even when off.

100% agree

It's just crazy considering how much up front effort they spent on it since the design was in-house.

If they're going to carry the option over to midsize I can see them developing it further. Can't imagine they will if not.

Edit: To be clear, I'm not saying this is ok! I would be incredibly frustrated if I paid good money for the HUD!

"Focusing on". 🤣

Yeah, it happed 3 times to me on a short drive tonight. It's blinding for real! Wrote a whole essay to Lucid's swfeedback email address, this is potential safety issue!
