Gravity HUD Position and Clarity Questions

I find I’d rather have the HUD than not, even in its current form. I have it on its lowest position setting. Having navigation, ACC max, speed, and DDPro Steering info right in my field of vision is useful, once you get used to it.

It’s adjustable up and down but the default low is too high to start with. Instead of being lower and more bumper / road level it’s at the trunk level of the car in front basically obstructing the car.

Now that I can actually see it (had to order non-polarized sunglasses), I've grown to like it (flaws and all). The "still too high" lowest position was enough out of the way for me when I was sitting higher (as I prefer to do), but then the field of view was aimed too low and the brightness faded too much. I was on the very edge. So I was forced to lower the seat to see it consistently. But when I did that, it effectively raised the viewing angle so it's right on the edge of being in the way.

(The view out the rearview mirror is so bad when sitting high that I've gotta sit lower for that too. And even then it's still pretty bad, just not quite as awful.)

Seems like the positioning of the HUD (as well as the tilt) should be a very simple software tweak to move it around on the projection screen. The fact they haven't done it yet must either mean it's not that simple, or they're struggling mightily. I fear for the latter.

There should be a stop sale on the HUD until Lucid can actually figure out how to make it work properly. It should never have been released in its current form unless they were going to have the issues fixed in the first few months. That ship has long sailed.

I agree, your photo isn't that dark but I'm already willing to argue that the level of glare is a safety hazard. I can only imagine how much of a nightmare it'd be if that happens at night

It's indeed a safety hazard because you don't know when to expect it and it's really blinding when it is dark

I have absolutely no problem with the operation of the HUD. Can it be improved? Light-years of improvement are awaited! I would order it again.

I keep it dim, barely visible. Any flaws are barely visible as well.

I didn't experience the glare problem others reported... Until I did. Takes just the right driving direction and sun angle. For me in the Denver area it was driving northbound in March. Then it was like "Pow!".

I like the HUD, the display is crisp and clear and provides useful information to me. I would order it again. I also am hoping that the AR features come soon. There are lot oc complaints on the forum about the HUD, but I am happy with it.

Tough call. I would probably order it again (flaws and all), since 90% of the time it works well enough to be useful. Still holding out hope that the aiming and tilt and all that will get fixed with a software update.

The bigger issue at this point (which is permanent) is the glare. That's two-fold. First is the massive glare when the sun hits it at just the wrong angle. That's rare, but major when it happens. It's truly "Throw a towel on the dash to block it just so I can see the road" bad when it happens. But the other is simply the reflection of the box on the windshield. That's just annoying enough to be a consideration. You tend to ignore it over time, but it's still more noticeable than it should be. You have to weigh the pros and cons on that. Look for it when you do a test drive.

I've had the Gravity since October and while I do think HUD is better than no HUD, mine is very obviously out of alignment. Has Lucid made any official comment on how/when they may fix the crooked out of alignment HUD issues? When i inquired on delivery they basically said nothing they could do at that time. It creates a double vision issue for the numbers and I have to lean left to see the right lane warning marker. When both lane warning markers are visible the right one is 150% larger and is lower compared to the left. It is obviously mal-positioned.

Unlike with key fob issues, ADAS improvements, PAAK, and other software/hardware issues or missing/delayed features, where Lucid posted occasional updates on steps they were taking to address, when improvements could be anticipated, etc., Lucid has been totally silent on HUD for almost a year now. No comments on if changes are coming/being worked on. Zero comment on when or if AR will ever be delivered. HUD software was notably missing from the recent software improvement/feature release timeline that Lucid released a month or so ago.

The problem is that the HUD is tied to the enhanced ambient lighting in the car. If they stop selling the HUD, they stop selling cars with this nice enhanced lighting.

I just received my Gravity a few days ago and absolutely LOVE the heads-up display for navigation—it’s so much better than glancing at the screens for turns.

That said, I’ve noticed a few things:

• I’m 6 ft tall and have the HUD set to its lowest position, but it still feels high. Why would anyone want to raise it even higher and have it directly in their line of sight? That doesn’t seem safe. I wish the display could go even lower.
• The display is very slightly blurry unless I tilt my head to the left, which makes it clearer. Has anyone else experienced this? What's odd is that sometimes the display seems clear for a few minutes. I'm not sure if I just get used to the fuzziness or what.
• At night, the HUD gets REALLY dim. I also see it slightly adjusting brightness randomly as well. Is that normal? I have it set to the highest brightness.

Would love to hear if others have similar experiences or any tips to improve clarity and brightness.

I'm also working on getting mine before the year runs out. You got any advice for me?

Right, there were no mentions about the HUD when they presented the upcoming roadmap.

but they did mention a new partnership with Basemark (Finland) on the software side for the HUD recently, right, at least for the AR? that counts for something and they certainly could look at complaints owners are making in parallel.

I don't have the HUD tilt problems some do, but the lowest minimum height is a puzzler as to how they arrived at that. I can manage it as others have by lowering the seat itself. I don't like doing that, but it definitely helps. I fear that is baked in with the physical placement of the components, but fingers are crossed.

FWIW, the loaner Gravity I currently have does not have a HUD. I miss the one mine has and don't miss it at the same time. Not having reflection distractions is nice, but having all that info in front I miss. (My GT is in service with the front end in pieces as they try to track down a wheel related droning noise. New drive unit on order in case that's what it is. Sigh.)

The view out the rear view mirror was what determined my seating height, as well. That seems to be near the optimal seating height for the HUD.

If I could make the decision again, I would skip adding the HUD. While Dynamic Ambient Lighting and Power Outlets are fun extras and certainly bring a bit of flair, the $3,200 USD price tag for the Technology Package just doesn't seem justified to me.

My main issue is with the HUD's projection height. As someone who stands 6'4" and keeps the driver seat positioned low and far back, I find that the HUD projects no lower than the vertical middle of the windshield. To even catch a glimpse of the display, I have to duck my head down. This has been pretty disappointing, so I've ended up permanently turning off the HUD. Thankfully, the essential information is easy to see and ergonomically placed at the top center of the Clearview Cockpit display, so I don't miss the HUD at all.

For what it's worth, I'm really enjoying almost everything else about the GGT.

You can turn off the HUD display. But if you're referring to the glare when the sun is at just the wrong angle, no, that's not a function of the HUD being on or off, that's a result of the recessed plastic cover in the dash. Only way to stop that (when the sun is at the wrong angle and reflects off it) is to cover it with something like a dark towel.

The sun is rarely at that angle so it's rarely an issue. But when it does happen, it's good to have a towel handy to throw up there.
