Crack in Rear Windshield

Could it have been condensation instead of a leak due to something the tinters were doing to prep the glass?

I washed our car for the first time in cold weather (at least cold for south Florida) last week after pulling the car out of a warmer garage. For the first time I saw moisture beads inside the rear taillight housing. When I checked the next day the lens was clear. I'm guessing it was condensation.

I really should remove that picture since in the end, it did turn out to be condensation, and it cleared up on its own.
 
Got a sickening crack on front windshield a few days ago. Definitely a little pit there, hoping for the best. Thinking ahead I wasn't sure if only place to do replacement was lucid service, but I suppose that is the case. Any thoughts on whether they can do something to prevent crack from starting?

Based on an SMS text conversation I had with Lucid Service yesterday, Lucid are developing a network of Lucid Approved or Lucid Certified autobody shops. I was invited to bring my car to a local autobody shop specialising in repairing high end vehicles, for my windshield replacment, but I declined. I’m bringing my car up to my nearest Lucid Service Centre instead, about 100 miles away.

As to your second question, I’ve seen youtube videos of car owners having some kind of film applied to their front windscreen, sort of like a PPF for glass surfaces. Their feedback has been all over the place, some positive, some negative. The results were mixed enough so that I decided fairly early on NOT to have it done.

In 50 years of owning cars, only once did I have to have a panel ding removed from a car. I've got a "dent doctor" coming later today to repair the second ding we've had on the Lucid (this one happened while the car was at the Riviera Beach Service Center). He said this would be the second ding he's removed from a Lucid in the Naples area. And some other posters have already had their cars dinged. What gives here? Are Lucids somehow ding magnets?

Our car also came back from Riviera Beach with two minor scratches on the right rear door, at about the same level as the ding on the right rear fender flare just above the wheel. The scratches are hard enough to see that I'm wondering whether I want to tackle them at all. I'm worried that with the tinted clear coat on the Zenith Red, it might be hard to get a color match, and our car has also been ceramic coated which complicates a touch up. I would like, however, to have a local Lucid-certified body shop available to advise me on the matter.
 
Loosely related to the topic of the windshield crack, for a chip in a windshield that hasn't yet developed into a crack but might when subjected to temperature-related stress (defrosting cold windshield, for example), I have seen the chips sealed by windshield replacement companies, have had that action paid for by my insurance company, and have bought the kits in auto parts stores and done it myself. Unless the chips are very small, it is easy and probably wise to seal them and stave off a crack.
 
Dang I just got a hairline crack in my rear window originating from the top center, about 5 inches long. I didn't hear it crack while driving nor do I remember any rocks/debris hitting my car. The crack appears to be from the inside (?). Hope this is covered under warranty....

Dang I just got a hairline crack in my rear window originating from the top center, about 5 inches long. I didn't hear it crack while driving nor do I remember any rocks/debris hitting my car. The crack appears to be from the inside (?). Hope this is covered under warranty....
Sorry to hear, but this hairline crack is a thing – unfortunately. Search around a little bit using hairline as your search term, and you will see. Here is a link to a thread below with several similar complaints and pictures. Good luck.

 
On other vehicles I have had rock chips and rock chips with hairline cracks repaired by windshield repair guys that inject epoxy into the damage. It makes the damage almost invisible and it stops the crack from growing. I’ve done this on multiple vehicles over the last 20 years with excellent results
 
In late April our GT developed a stress crack (about 5' long) in the rear roof glass canopy (warranty). Parts were ordered, the repair scheduled and carried out with the most important work (the canopy and the conductor switch safety recall along with a coolant hose TSC update) completed last Friday... the car was in the shop for an amazing 8 days for this, and when returned to us we had to go back as the car interior was littered with junk (pieces of wire, foam & plastic bits, etc) from the repairs and the interior trim had not been reseated (this is on top of not all of the smaller side issues on the service ticket not being addressed due running out of time, that work needs to be rescheduled still and is awaiting a part). In the process of replacing the canopy our rear window was chipped (tech failure, perhaps the shop's first glass work(?)), which caused that piece to need replacement (and thus the repair taking longer, we're now on our 3rd one, the original having been chipped when a Ford F650 rear ended us while we were stopped at a stop light).

Its a relatively new center at Tysons Corners in VA... they are still on the learning curve, and we are in ongoing dialog about that.
What I found more interesting is that there appears to be something of a pattern with window stress cracks. Not sure what the normal would be, other than that in 45 previous years of car ownership I think I'd had two, and so far the GT has had one as well as two rear window failures (ok, one was from the accident, but both failures seem to be related to the edge of that window being struck).
I can fill MCR in offline about these & the other issues if appropriate (especially about the 19" wheel covers).

Does the crack go all the way to the edge ?

If it does the service team will say that there was an impact at that point and hence not covered under warranty and you’ll have to file a claim with insurance.

FWIW my crack also appeared mysteriously during a heat wave when I took the car through a touchless car wash. I have a gut feeling it was the heat and sudden cold water and extreme heat again that caused it.

I would be careful washing a car if its hot out - Ive had windows crack right in front of me as I was washing the car.

Inside, it's a terrible angle but it looks like it continues under.

I would be careful washing a car if its hot out - Ive had windows crack right in front of me as I was washing the car.
I can understand where heat shock could cause that to happen. But I would have never actually considered it.

Nice day today. In the mid 80s. Certainly be more aware of temperatures in the future though.

Actually if it’s from the inside glass only I think they’d have a hard time saying there was a impact

Mine was a much smaller crack to the rear window, and they gave me absolutely no hassle about replacement. The service technician told me this has to do with the heat in Arizona (either during or after assembly) and the glue used to hold the window not being very flexible.

Mine was replaced under warranty. They'll look to see if there is any evidence of external impact.
 
I had to file an insurance claim for my cracked rear windshield, using my comprehensive coverage. It wasn’t a cheap repair either. Lucid took no responsibility for the crack and did not offer to cover it under warranty.

Looking back, I wasn’t assertive enough in pressing my case. I admitted to a rock thrown up by a lorry, hitting my rear windshield. So Lucid took that admission as their out. But then, there was no mark or pit on the external surface of the rear windshield. It was very likely that that rock that hit my car didn’t hit my rear windshield at all, but another part of the glass canopy.

The crack was first noticed by the auto detail shop, who were about to re do a rear window tinting job that had gone bad. Were the auto detail technicians the ones who caused that crack while working on the rear window? I would never know, I could never prove it and the auto detail shop didn’t admit to damaging the rear windshield, nor would they ever. I asked them.

Too many extenuating circumstances, too many hands in the pot, too much willingness on my part to admit liability when there was probably no liabiliity to admit. The whole matter of my rear windshield replacement has been resolved in a manner that hasn’t sat well with me in end. It’s also resulted in one of two claims on my auto policy within a two month period. I just try not to think about it anymore.
