Car Play - interference from Pilot Panel

This is a new one for me - anything on Car Play (podcast, SXM etc.) pauses and stops playing when I use the Pilot Panel (HVAC, car settings etc). All functionality of Car Play is still on screen, but when you press “play”, it instantly reverts to “pause”.

Logo reset and then repairing phone solves this, but that’s not feasible whilst driving. Any thoughts?
