Lucid Air Grand Touring
I am trying to get educated on WHETHER it makes sense, and WHEN does it make sense to upgrade my 2022 Air (GT) to UX3.
Let me start by laying out the premise and the questions:

Premise:
> Lucid says they want to move the Air to UX3. However, that requires a HW upgrade to CCCV2 (pre 2024 models?). The upgrade costs the owner ~$950 (plus tax).

Questions:
> Realistically, when will UX3 come to the Air family?
> Upon UX2 deployment, will UX2 be "frozen-in-place"?
> If I don't upgrade to UX3, does that mean there will not be any more bug fixes on UX2?
> Part of the rationale for CCCV2 upgrade is premised on the older generation computer running out of room (memory, power). Is this correct?
> If I don't upgrade (and stay on UX2) does that mean, we will continue to see support on UX2?
> Is it likely that UX2 with CCCV1 hardware would experience more bugs (running out of compute resources)?
> Aside from the "visual upgrade" how would UX3 enhance my Air's ownership and driving experience?
> With Gravity and Cosmo on the front burner for Lucid, REALISTICALLY, when will Lucid get to UX3 deployment on the Air?
> as an Air owner, would you do the CCCV2 upgrade NOW or wait until UX3 is released to the Air and AFTER we gather enough data on the initial deployment, benefits vs new bugs?

This is all speculation on my part, so grain of salt.

- 3.0 for Air will likely ship by end of summer. Or early fall.
- 2.0 will continue to get bug fixes for critical issues. But I wouldn’t expect much for improving functions that are minor quirks.
- the newer ccc module is faster AND has more memory, I believe. I noticed a difference, though very subtle, when upgraded mine.
- if you don’t upgrade, you will definitely still get “support”. You will still be able to call for help with issues. But no new features at all.
- I can say anecdotally that my car seems to be even less buggy than it was before I updated to CCCv2. So maybe the extra speed and memory does help, even with UX 2. But it clearly doesn’t solve all issues.
- the big advantage of UX 3 is multitasking. Think music app on top screen while maps is on the Pilot Panel. That sort of thing. That, and for folks who have both a Gravity and an Air, less friction when switching between the two. Other than that, it’s not a massive change to functionality at all. Just the experience layer.
- I did the upgrade proactively, knowing that there will be a mad rush when 3.0 actually comes out. This is a personal decision. If you don’t plan on updating when 3.0 comes out immediately, there’s no rush to do the hardware update early.

And for anyone who thinks UX 3.0 for Air will be flawless on release: I’ll ask you to step away from the keyboard, take a deep breath, and remind yourself that you live on Earth One, not the fantasy land social media has created in your head.

There will be bugs. If the car is stable for you with 2.x, and you aren’t ready for a few bumps, wait for the rest of us idiots who upgrade immediately to report on what we find. Or wait until the first few bug fixes go out. It’ll save you a lot of heartache.

Not sure if there will be a “mad rush” for upgrade when 3.0 comes out because this is for pre 2024 model airs only correct? Also not everyone is going to want to upgrade. Only bottle neck I can see is the availability of service centers and depending on where Lucid gets their chips from the chips itself.

I think it is great Lucid has this option to upgrade. Wish they also had a stealth upgrade option. When I purchased the Air, unfortunately stealth was not available.

So much this. People seems to be talking like 3.0 will be the silver bullet to cure all woes. While I’m excited for the update, I’m very much ready for it to continue to have some bugs. Lucid hasn’t proven yet that they can push out a reliable package.

I have a mid-June appointment for year two service (low miles) and I have decided to go ahead with the upgrade to CCV2 at the same time. I plan to keep my 2023 AT for another six years, so it's amortized over a reasonable period.

I know. It is sad. Same issues on the Air was present on the Gravity. The video from Engineering Explained also shows reliability is an issue. How are they going to go for the mainstream with their midsize if they don’t learn and improve??

Midsize will ship with UX 4.0, which is a whole new layout and system. The single screen requires significant rethinking of the user experience layer.

The fundamental stuff under the hood, of course, can remain the same. ADAS, all the driver functions, backup cameras, the media apps themselves even, etc. But the UX layer on top will need to be redone yet again.

This is yet another reason why getting Air on 3.0 is a good idea. That way, they are only managing two UX layers, not three.

I'm hoping the single screen (and the much more efficient and simple wiring) of Midsize will help prevent a lot of the bugs we're now seeing on Air and Gravity. Air, in particular, is a nightmare from what I understand, in terms of the various hardware components and how they communicate with one another. (Or don't communicate with one another, in some cases.)

In theory, Midsize will be spared many of Air's bugs through the simplicity of the hardware alone. Doesn't mean there wont be bugs. There most certainly will be. But it should be easier to manage at the end of the day. Combine that with better practices, and they may just be able to pull it off well enough to avoid disaster.

Please stay on topic. There is another thread to discuss that video.

My neighbor was previously employed by Lucid and was working specifically on UX3 for Air. He was the one who convinced me to update to CCC v2. Here is what he shared with me before he was laid off. (read into that whatever you want)

UX3 will need CCCv2
UX2 will be sunsetting additional features. What is currently on 2.9 will be the last feature update for the CCC v1. He did say they will continue to support and correct bugs in 2.9 but will NOT be adding any new features to the system. ALL new features will be in UX3.

He also hinted at more integrated applications within UX3. I am praying for a native Apple app. But I would assume Amazon Music will come first. He said that multi tasking and overall system smoothness is vastly improved.

He also said that the "Team" was talking about possibly doing external beta testers.... (Of course I asked if I could beta once I got CCC v2 in)

Then.... he got canned... So my information is only this much.... I hope (because he has an amazing wife and littles and is a great guy himself) that he and his family get back to working soon! =)

There are several articles and videos, including one by everyone’s favorite You Tuber, describing what UX 3.0 will offer and improve upon. Door behavior stands out as a notable improvement. I’d recommend seeking out that information to decide if the upgrade is important to you.

How well will it work out the gate? Who knows. The reported issues with software updates seem to be very hit and miss. Personally I haven’t experienced any but obviously others have. I am currently running on the CCCv2 chip for what it’s worth. The car had the chip when I bought it so I really can’t compare it to v1.

Really sorry to hear about your neighbor. Sometimes housecleaning scoops up some good ones...

In the tech and software space, layoffs are so common at this rate it's sadly not a surprise anymore. Not even the best programmers of the team are safe from layoffs, and it's a damn shame that good talent is treated as something so disposable.

That isn’t the same thing as being laid off. One can both be not disposable and not indispensable. Those that are treated as disposable are usually let go outside of layoffs, not in them. It’s that middle pack that ends up being hurt the most by layoffs.

fair point

I have already made the upgrade to CCCv2 in the anticipation that two of my least favorite conditions will be remedied with UX 3.0
  1. The inability of the current UX to support true multitasking of the Nav Screen and Pilot Panel. In other words, allowing Nav on one screen, entertainment on the other.
  2. Eventual progression of DreamDrive Pro to allow for self-initiated lane changes.
... Wish they also had a stealth upgrade option. When I purchased the Air, unfortunately stealth was not available.
I did the stealth upgrade on my own for a total of about $1,500. I paid $900 to have the platinum and chrome elements wrapped in Dark Graphite and I paid about $600 to have the Service Center replace the Platinum pillar appliques with Stealth appliques. I do not have the Stealth 19" wheels, but in all honesty, I prefer the contrast of the stock wheels.

For $950 after spending almost 100 K, it makes perfect sense to upgrade so you don’t have to worry about all the things you mentioned
