Car and Driver Comparison Gravity vs Escalade IQ

Just playing devils advocate….

If “100s of years of no change” were the sole guiding factor in deciding whether to bring in some new change, then we would not have the “squircle” 😄 and perhaps other new innovations that did work out well.

I didn't say "no change". I said no stupid change simply for change's sake. If we had no change we would be walking knee deep in equine feces on our roads.

I hear the wiper control was moved to the Gravity touch screen…
It’s on the Air touch screen too.

Right now their problem is not marketing... they need to get their software and production issues under control.. they need a full-time CEO, and once they have all that.. they can market the hell out of it..
Don’t disagree on that but marketing has to happen to sell cars. I’m not just talking about gravity - the air. I’m a total car guy - was on Tesla when roadster came out in 2008/09. I’ve owned or currently own Sports cars like Ferrari Porsche’s Audi etc. Went to look at several ev brands. For example Kia EV6 top of line in Canada - note not GT as it’s no longer available in Canada for 2025. But it came to 70k loaded and wanted to lease. They try to make me a deal. When they sent their final offer after negotiating, my Lucid air touring was 25 bucks more per week on my lease. It’s not even a contest. Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Genesis etc. It’s not even close - how many consumers know this? Just design an ad showing you can get a $110,000 car for the price of 70K car - the monthly is what you compare if leasing. The Saudi’s have deep pockets and I haven’t seen one ad. Why? Everyday people ask me what kind of car is that? I saw one in Naples Florida at our place down there and I’ve seen one other up here. Why keep a great car a secret? If you are in the sales business, you need to get marketing.

I agree that Marketing is critical to scale sales - especially for consumer goods. Demand is not their constraint right now. Their constraint is Supply (production) and some Quality.

Lucid has an order from Saudi (committed to purchasing up to 100,000 Lucid electric vehicles over a 10-year period. The purchase includes an initial order of 50,000 vehicles, with an option to buy an additional 50,000). This is on top of the partnership with Uber for I think 20K vehicles starting 2026. And in spite of all this, the CEO actually lowered the production numbers for this year!

They need to spend money to fix Production and fix Quality now.... once that is in sight, they should and will scale Marketing...

Tesla famously didn’t advertise at all for a decade. Rivian doesn’t really advertise either.

I DID see a lucid commercial while watching TV (we have YouTubeTV as a provider) and I’ve gotten Lucid ads online.

None of the EV only folks really advertise. It’s kind of meaningless (IMO) at this price level. If you’re looking for an EV for $100,000 (or even $80,000), you’ll find Lucid. I’m sure Cadillac and others benefit from their brand recognition but, again, someone buying an Escalade IQ likely isn’t cross shopping beyond perhaps a Mercedes. Again, just my feeling and sense among friends and colleagues.

That said, I can understand an argument that there are many more EVs now than when Tesla started and there were no “off road” EV SUVs when Rivians came out. Nevertheless, I do think they’re fine without advertising for a long time.

I am following Lucid Motors on Linkedin and it's pretty often posting links to reviews, new ads and information. Not sure that medium is the right one for getting people to buy cars especially since in the US we still have a bifurcation of either you are trying to buy and EV and either know about the startups or just hope your local legacy dealer has something; or you are not, I feel like the number of executives driving to work in executive sedans is dwindling substantially after the pandemic....

I haven't followed it closely, but I believe Lucid has hired some marketing heavyweights recently. You're steering an ocean liner here--it takes a while to turn the boat in a new direction.

When we're talking about marketing here, what we're really talking about is brand awareness. Tesla had high brand awareness very early on because they were the big dog in the EV space. Now there are numerous companies in the EV space (including some legacy American companies) so it is harder to build that brand awareness. Lucid isn't going to do it through traditional advertising. They're going to have to do it through alternative media and other ways to make consumers aware of their product. As far as I can see, they are starting to do this, but it does take time.

I wish this were true but IMO it is only true for a subset of EV buyers. The committed EV buyer does research and knows what is out there in a given size, power, luxury and range. But, unfortunately, there are many drivers who simply will always buy from the same company that they have always bought from (a Honda guy is a Honda guy; a Cadillac guy is a Cadillac guy) or will purchase from the company with a good ad.
