Choosing gravity GT vs DE

It's to give the car more rear torque bias for balance for power out of corners, handling etc.. Lucid also when driving in smooth under light load is effectively 2WD.
That just changes the maximum torque. They could get the same front torque with an 8.7:1 ratio.
It would be interesting to see the efficiency map for Lucid's motors. As you said though electric motors are efficient over a wide range of RPM and load so it's probably a small difference.

I’m not as convinced that the GT numbers were sandbagged.

DE and Sapphire for sure. Not sure about the GT-P.
I haven't driven the DE or Sapphire, But the GT-P and GT are not much different on the low end, but the GT-P keeps pushing on the high end which for me is the big difference.

That’s the main difference. Handling-wise, they drive very similarly, assuming all other things are equal (same wheels/tires, etc.).

And on city streets, you’ll never know. But pass someone on the highway, or take it canyoning, and you can tell.

The Sapphire is another beast entirely.

I'd have to try the Sapphire, I am so torn between the GDE and the Sapphire. The NY event in the Meatpacking really sold me on the GDE... but the sapphire's raw power is very alluring, even tho I haven't experienced it.

They’re very different cars. See if you can test drive an Air Sapphire sometime.

I’d pick the Gravity, but that’s because I have an Air DE. Between the Sapphire and the DE, I pick the DE because I like the glass roof and don’t want to give it up.

In a traditional SUV (with lockers) you can send all the torque to one wheel though. Kyle Conner was saying this limits the off-road performance somewhat and he'd like Rivian to put a physical locker on the quad motor. Obviously this only matters in pretty extreme rock crawling situations so it's not relevant to the Gravity.
Does Conner have a lot of off road expertise? I'm struggling to imagine an off road situation where you could successfully put down ~1000HP through a single tire. For ICE vehicles with much lower HP and torque, this seems like a more legitimate desire.

It's very easy to get most of the weight on a single rear wheel off-road. It's not about HP, it's about torque. Most EVs have single speed gearboxes so the 1000hp is only available at 80mph. ICE SUVs have lower gearing, a 2 speed transfer case that gives an additional 3x torque, a torque converter, and the ability to send all the torque to a single wheel.
Though none of this has anything to do with the Gravity since it's not going to be rock crawling.

I mean, never say never, someone will rock crawling this thing if at all possible… I am sure. (You willed it into existence by your comment)

Any speculation on why the paint and interior choices are limited on DE if it's not going to ship early? (Like other reasons, "because they can?")

I got this email from my sales rep on April 9th, referring to the NYC event, Two things that have been reported upon with contradictions or no info: he indicates a specific 450 units of the DE (which I have not seen on the forum here before, of course I could have just missed it) and also the note about the DE starting production BEFORE the GT- pretty sure I read the reverse was true somewhere earlier.....

At this this event, it was announced that the invite-only Dream Edition variant of Lucid Gravity would begin customer deliveries within this month of April, and would ultimately be limited to 450-units. We anticipate the Grand Touring trim to begin production shortly after Dream Edition.

Well, I'll be . . . .

I just got off the phone with my sales advisor before I opened this thread. I have decided to switch our second Gravity order -- a Grand Touring -- to a Dream Edition as well. He said he thought Lucid had just made some system updates that would allow him to switch the order directly without having to run it through Sales HQ, but he needed a few minutes to check.

And . . . he just called back while I'm writing this to say he could make the order switch himself. He had heard nothing about a 450 order limit, but he knows that doesn't necessarily mean it's not in place. He'll let me know if the change goes through.

Before I did this, I checked with my insurance agent to see if I could get a quote without a VIN. She said as long as I had the year, make, and model she could give me a quote that would be very much in the ballpark if not quite exact. I almost fell out of my chair when she called back. The quote for six months is $675 for one Gravity Dream and $967 for the second Dream (as one of the cars carries the Uninsured Motorist premium which is "stacked" to cover any other cars under the policy). This is $161 less than on our 2021 Model S Plaid for six months. I carry high deductibles, but still . . . .

Thanks for the reminder to call the number on my "exclusive invitation". It seems to be a mail merge from marketing because it was the number for the Boston Seaport studio (which isn't yet a licensed sales location) rather than the actual Natick facility -- they were just as confused as we are about how these things get sent out. I asked my questions and he said someone from Boston or Natick would get back to me with answers; I let him know that there might not be ones based on the online forum traffic, but I appreciate the effort!

My questions are the same as everyone's (and I think I've mentioned before):
  • Any info on extras beyond the things detailed in email (hp, badgers, etc)?
  • What is "limited time" since I'd prefer a test drive before switching to a non-refundable deposit?
  • Are they being delivered earlier, or is it a trim that will be in production with the GT?
And since I just got a call back, here are the answers (that will make y'all flip out):
  • Mostly the extra HP and badging.
  • Should be possible to test drive first -- expecting one in the first week of May.
  • Dream Edition deliveries before the end of June
Take that with whatever salt you need, but I will definitely report on when I get a test drive...

Just got email confirmation that the switch to a Dream went through. So if there is a 450-car limit on the production run, orders haven't yet hit it.

I made this change because, the more we thought about it, we decided that holding out for the colors we wanted (Lunar Titanium / Ojai) wasn't worth the performance tradeoff, especially as no one can say when the Titanium will go into production. And I didn't want to run the risk of Dream orders shutting down, as Lucid was staying closed-mouth about it.

And given the relatively small price difference between a Dream and a fully-optioned Grand Touring, why not?

So here's where our orders stand:

Dream Edition (fun in the sun)
Abyss Black
Yosemite
22/23" wheels

Dream Edition (cold-weather road tripper)
Aurora Green
Tahoe
21/22" wheels

I'm actually gratified by this, as I was hoping the Dreams wouldn't be the first cars off the line this time around.

Well, the implication was that *I* could get one by the end of June -- something I would not bet on even if that was the intent -- not that deliveries started in June. I feel like that would require a significant production ramp even if the cap is 450 vehicles. (I did not ask about that and he did not volunteer a limit, just that he thought I should be able to get a test drive before I had to commit.)

You're probably right in your calculation. Sorta drat, though, from my perspective.

Will the Gravity be a 2026? Or a 2025 model?
