Lucid CEO Says Gravity Hands-Free Driving Is ‘Few Weeks Away’ After Delay

Maybe, but I think there are some tractable differences in how @Ron_Burgundy drove his R1S and how I drive mine that can explain most of the differences:

> I drive at/slight above the speed limit, in "Conserve" mode (i.e., FWD, using 2 out of the 4 motors). I got ~2.5mi/kWh., about 10% better than Rivian's claimed efficiency. I don't want to speak for Ron, but I think he drove faster and in 4WD. Ron got significantly less. He can elaborate.
> as for ADAS, I quoted my recent (last 2 months) experience with my Rivian. I think Ron's data was 1+ year ago.

I believe in Physics. I don't think our cars were that different. But the drivers/time frames were different.

As for my experience with my Lucid AGT, I never got better than 3.5-3.6mi/kWh, which is significantly lower than Lucid's claims. You and I had this debate multiple times. Your recent posting says Lucid's, using the 5-cycle test, is "slightly optimistic". But if you look at most Lucid AGT owners' experience, actual realizable efficiencies reported are in the low 3 mi/kWh range, hence, the credibility gap.

In a recent positing, I posted my AGT (~3.5 mi/kWh) and R1S's (~2.5 mi/kWh) efficiencies on the same (780 miles) road trips. @Adnillien says (and I agree) a more interesting comparison would be between the R1S and the Gravity. Since I don't have a Gravity, I can't made this comparison. Gravity should be more efficient than the R1S, perhaps not by as much as you think!

Ron can speak for himself.
My point was not to re-litigate the issue. There are many factors involved.

My point was that different people with ostensibly the same vehicle can have vastly different experiences, in part because of different expectations, but also because they are different drivers, with different habits, live in different climates, drive on different roads, or simply got a car that did or didn’t have various issues.

Simplifying that to one thing is very difficult, and sometimes impossible, unless you’re running both cars on a dyno or side by side on a highway simultaneously for a limited run.

And even then the cars may have different issues, because neither car is the same as the other. Airfoil hanging loose? There’s some efficiency lost.

Anyway, I think we agree that different people can have different experiences with the same year and model of vehicle, which was actually my only point.

As for the “credibility gap,” that would apply to every vehicle that uses the 5-cycle test. That includes Rivian, in case you’re wondering. I’m glad you’ve seen good efficiency with yours; but let’s not pretend everyone does. At highway speeds (70-75mph) both vehicles see the same 15-30% loss, though under the same precise conditions, the Rivian will generally be somewhat less efficient, due to the fact that it is a pickup and/or boxy SUV, and not a sedan.

That’s not controversial.

@Ron_Burgundy, you and I exchanged our respective experiences on our R1Ss before. We have the same vintage and equipment on our respective R1Ss. Yet, our experiences differ. For example, I drive long distances (780-mile tr one-way trips) between Sausalito and AZ. Most of the trips, I drove on "Conserve" Mode, about 75mph, and I get 2.5 mi/kWh. You don't.

Recently (last couple of months), I made about a dozen trips from Sausalito to Sonoma in my Rivian. ADAS worked perfectly fine. I can cruise the first 20 miles from Sausalito to Novato on 101 totally hands free.

I don't do off road with my R1S. I recently towed a UHaul 4X8 trailer with a heavy load from Sausalito to AZ (780 miles). Other than the reduced efficiency and no ADAS (Rivian does not enable ADAS while towing) the R1S performed flawless.
You’re right. I forgot about that and that you had an R1S. Appreciate the refresher. We also now have a 2026 dual performance R1S. Too early to tell about efficiency. But different thread…

And I never use conserve, so good memory on that!

rofl

no consumer ever pressured them to sell a half assed car, they pressured themselves.
Just drove back to the office and back in record time (perhaps even incl on the Harley!) No WAY I'm classifying this beast as "a half assed car"..it fully hauls ass!!

Can't figure out why that little speed limit sign on the Clear View Cockpit screen is always orange though? Is that something they promised??

This seems to imply auto park between just lines is in operation right now, is it? Didn’t work at all during my test drive, but that was several ota updates ago, but I don’t recall parking improvement in any ota, but from memory, so wanted to see if this now works?

Hasn’t worked or engaged for me the few times I’ve tried it but I don’t mind parking my own car. What I’d use more is a feature that allowed it to pull itself out of a space when buffoons park next to me and I can’t open the door!

I hear you, but I wanted to confirm that what the interim CEO is describing as their autonomy roadmap is all in the future not just hands free driving, but all of it is probably a lot closer than a v2 roadster!

Looks like someone heard our complaints. It's back to Q2.

I wonder what the purpose of traffic light detection is. I can't imagine it'll be able to stop at red lights, right?

It might, eventually. Most helpful immediately would be the “ding” when light turns green. The current “traffic is moving” feature is wildly inaccurate and based solely on a car ahead of you moving.

What about hands free lock and unlock? Seems like a simple precursor to hand free driving. How can I trust the driving algorithm, if they can't master something as binary as locked and unlocked.

I've really REALLY tired of having to pull out my phone to drive my car, then also make sure I have my keycard in case I'm in some deep underground parking.

This is my guess as well.

Very true. My fob has been 99% working for about 2-3 months, so I am good here, but do want PaaK.

Walked up to the GGT this morning and for the 1st time since taking delivery: no response to the fob in my pocket.
Had to whip out the Key Card to unlock then once in the driver's seat I popped out the fob battery and popped it right back in after 10sec and Whalla!...fob recognized!
Glad I've read this forum for months and am not too into ADAS!!
[..nods in agreement with @NoseyReporter 's point about wondering how HFDA is to be trusted when they really haven't fixed the fob issues]

Heading home form work now worrying it's going to happen again 🙄

How long has it been since you replaced that battery? You might want to check the voltage of the battery at the very least.

Right, I believe it is the ding when the light turns green, same as Tesla does. This is one of the features I had been patiently waiting for, as it was originally promised.

These are very different functions/tasks, it is not possible to draw an inference from one about the other. Hands free has been very good on the Air so I believe that it will be good on Gravity also. Key fobs have not been great on either the Air or the Gravity, especially initially. Fortunately the Air is fairly good now.

Gravity's key fob has been very good for me, even better than the Air's fob. No problems at all in the month I've owned it.
