NACS Charging at Tesla SCs

My experience with the v4 charger this past weekend was inconsistent. The same supercharger in Truckee worked Friday night, and then failed (I tried 3 of them) on Saturday with the error - Unable to Authenticate. I've reported this to the Lucid SW email as well.

The Air will charge on a 920V V4 Tesla supercharger the same as it would on any other fully functional 920V-capable 350+kW charging station from EA, EVGo, Ionna, Mercedes, etc.
Gravity can charge faster at a 400+kW station, but the Air does not gain from the additional capability, being limited to just over 300kW.
Kyle has had the Air at 330+ I believe. Albeit for a very short timeframe.

I charged twice at Tesla SCs in Virginia this weekend. One nominally 350kW and one 250kW. Both gave me about 220kW up until about 50% SoC. Both said charging speed limited by charging station.

I wasn't watching closely enough to draw a graph or anything, but overall, I felt it was a pretty damned satisfying experience. Made a long road trip much easier than it would have been in my Model S.

I'll take it!

Thanks!

I wonder if some of the V4's haven't been cleared for use outside of Tesla-dom. I think OoS ran into that somewhere too.

There isn't a V4 in Truckee, CA - the highest level one there is a V3.5 (325kW max).

The site in Redwood City is still the only real V4 Supercharger in the US.

That said, not all Superchargers are open to NACS partners and they do sometimes change. One near me recently limited to Tesla only sometime around the 1st, I assume because it was often crowded or full and the reviews had a lot of people complaining about non-Teslas taking up two spaces to charge.

Yeah, we talked about it earlier in this thread after they opened it up to non-Teslas. It's still the only real V4 that has been opened though, there are a lot of "V3.5" sites with V4 dispensers but only the V3 power tech behind them.

As NACS rolls out to more cars, it will be MUCH easier to charge at SCs - albeit crowded. This is because the “take up two spots” issue is real with cars like old R1S having the charge part in the front left (or the Air!). That makes it darn near impossible not to take up two spots.

Im here at the Redwood City SC now. 8 stalls say ‘coming soon’ and are covered! Are these the 500kw stalls? The other ones are giving me 200kW max. :( preconditioned and started at 16% so expected a lot more.

I did manage to pull 236kW briefly which suggests they were capable of more but it’s fishy that 8 stalls were covered and apparently 8 stalls are supposed to have 599kW there. 🤷

Looking at the cybertruck examples for this SC, I think maybe 16% is too much SOC to pull the 400kW. Although I think on the Eastern Edge the Gravity 1 took over 300kW until over 25% SOC.

I did take some video and for about 1 second it went to 267kW but then immediately came down to 220kW. Next time I’ll roll in with low single digit SOC.

For the BP Pulse 400kw station I go to, I am fairly certain I’ve stayed over 300kW up to, maybe over, 25% SoC. It stays fairly high deeper into pack than I expected. Will pay more attention next time. Key, of course, is arriving at a pretty low SoC.

16% is about where the 400kw tapers off. You should have gotten higher than what you saw, but there could have been many reasons you didn't get great speeds.

Thnx good to know. The temperature was 65 and the station was completely empty so I don’t think those were issues. the factors I think impacted the charging were:

Not being low enough on SOC
Not preconditioning long enough (only 8min of this which may be biggest factor)

I’ll see if fixing both of these helps.

In the Air at least, depending on battery temperature, preconditioning can take as long as 45 minutes.

I was sitting in our newest Gravity at a Tesla Supercharger this morning. Suddenly this popped up on the mobile app:

However, this was what was on the dashboard at the same moment:

The car continued to charge without interruption. What's going on here?

The data showing on the app is a minute or two old. It has to go from your car up to the cloud and back to your phone.

Yep. That was the major issue I hope. I’ll try to make it a better test the next time I charge.

That's certainly true, but the message was that the car lost connection to the charger, which is a local, wired connection. There could have been a hiccup in the charger or in the car, and hopefully the connection was simply re-established a few moments later and charging continued. And the delay pointed out by @DeaneG probably means that disconnection happened at least a few moments ago, maybe even a minute or two ago, so by the time you look at the car, the connection has been re-established and charging was already back underway. I suspect the car might have shown an error briefly before the app showed the error.
