Finally got my HUD adjusted for my seating position and it’s working well, visible and not slanted. Now have a couple new gremlins. I had a beeping through the speakers as if I was closing in on a parking obstacle. Didn’t mater if I was driving, reversing or in park. No notice of any problem on screen. The sensors are all cleaned with no effect. Car shut off back on no dice. A soft reset made it go away. However open the rear passenger door passenger side caused the rear seat to lean forward and the motor moved the base as if I was to get in the third row. I have a 5 passenger model. Very odd

💩. Really sorry that happened. I hope you get the car back unscathed.

Can you clarify "doors won't open?" Did they unlock and then not physically open or could you not unlock them at all? I've seen reports of the handles not coming out when they are iced up.

FYI, you can also turn on the climate (and defrost) controls in the app. Perhaps a good idea to do this well in advance of using the car in bad conditions.

Right.
I was surprised he didn't turn climate on via the app, but maybe no cellular reception there.
He claims the doors won't shut since the windows didn't do their slight downward movement on door open, and so closing the doors with the windows up has interference problems, claiming he tried and chipped something. I guess the windows don't roll down via car controls, either.
I don't know why he can't/doesn't move the car anyway, or use a hair dryer or something to warm things up enough.

Regardless, however, freezing conditions are not something new and carmakers have been dealing with these conditions for a hundred years.

@borski, yes, I see now see the names are different. My bad.

I grew up in Ohio, and had my doors freeze shut (and open) a number of times. I carried around a butane torch (from Radio Shack, as I recall) to thaw out the latch, which would fix the frozen open problem, at least. Basically, the same mechanism still in use today as far as I can tell. I once had to drive back to my university 75 mi away with the door held closed by wrapping the shoulder harness around the inside door handle of my 1973 Buick Lesabre (back when the seat belt could be separated into 2 parts). That was fun :p

So, this has never been an issue with our X, which has frameless windows for the front doors.

But, the Gravity seems to have ice build up and freeze a bit easier. It’s not been an issue other than it can fail to lower on first or second try. It just feels like the window motor mechanism is stronger on the X and it just yanks window down whereas Gravity is less forceful. I am already super sensitive about the windows, but again, hasn’t been a showstopper for me - but am about to head to sub 15 degree temps and snow, so will see…

Bottom line - while a neat idea, I don’t think frameless windows are worth the issues they cause. Not sure why anyone would design a car with them. Our R1S has normal windows and has never had a problem as a result. The X has had a few issues and our Gravity windows, well, that’s in another thread…

Early Model S vehicles would not be able to present their exterior handles if they got wet and then conditions froze. I haven't heard anything recently, but I think Tesla has solved it.

Frankly, I wish you could customize the microphone key. “Hey, Lucid” is totally worthless. I’d rather have two customized keys on the right side steering wheel, one for drive mode and one for garage door. Tonight it took me 5 tries to get the garage door open using the touch screen.

They didn’t solve it. People just got used to clearing their handles during a storm or using a hairdryer. If you have iced over handles on an S or Gravity (or Air), or a ton of snow on them, they won’t present.

Interestingly, I got ice in the handle area of our Gravity when it was presented. SO, it wouldn’t close when I drove away. It tried twice and then then the handle just stayed out for the drive. It was fine. I could’ve stopped to clear it out, but kind of wanted to see what would happen.

Interesting question. Generally, yes, my trunk and trunk (double open) have opened fine in snow and ice.

My trunk would not open recently after a snow/ice storm but it was because there was snow and ice on top of the spoiler area that provided enough resistance to make trunk think it hit something and close after it tried to open. Worked fine after I cleared the snow. Just couldn’t be as lazy as I wanted.

Now that China has reportedly banned this design, will be interesting to see what the industry will do.

Totally agree re: the mic button. I bet they could change it via software. I don’t use voice assistants in general as they’re just too annoying. Lucid’s is no different.

Did they? Hmmm. Well, while not as impressive, the Model 3/Y handle seems more practical. The Cadillac Lyriq uses same design, although I think the 3/Y one is also under investigation in the US.

Honestly, use a regular freakin’ handle. It’s not THAT much drag. I’d rather my doors always open versus frameless windows and pop out handles.

Anything that slows me down or stops me from getting behind the squircle and entering driving bliss is an impediment to my experience!

Our X definitely gets frozen windows. We just got used to always jacking up remote climate if there was a chance of ice on the car. That thing defrosts fast! Haven't had a chance to see the Gravity behavior yet this year.

There are aesthetic signifiers of market segments; this is one of them. It looks nicer when you open the door. I don't begrudge the choice by Lucid.

OTOH, another one of those signifiers is "window seals that don't have gigantic, garish bubbles at each corner" because the seals aren't molded to the shape. :rolleyes:

They *all* do, including all of the showroom units. Service noted it as within spec, and I'm not going to dispute that. Hopefully there's a part rev in the future.

Agreed. I don’t notice it as much now and it’s “fine”. They’ll figure it out at some point.

I’d prefer they figure out how to get my drunk to not need to “double open”. Two fixes so far and it still reverts to this behavior. Again, not a huge issue.
