A VIN was assigned to our second Gravity Dream order a couple of weeks ago, but there have been no software loads logged in on the owner's dashboard, something that usually would have happened by now. I did not call anyone to inquire why, as I do not want to get this car until production issues are further resolved.
Then yesterday afternoon I got a call from Lucid HQ in Fremont. I was told that Lucid has been reading some of my posts and that they are closely tracking what's going on with our current Gravity Dream. The rear drive unit is being replaced "out of an abundance of caution", and they assured me that it would not leave Roswell until everything they can currently address is addressed. Furthermore, they said they are backtracking the build history of the car to see why certain things got through inspection, such as the non-functioning navigation and GPS systems -- a functional check they said should be done at the factory.
Finally, they said the second car we have on order is being watched very carefully in production to insure they deliver a car that performs as intended, up to the current level of software capability.
This call went a very long way to restoring the patience that has worn away during this saga. I've had new models from GM (a Corvette), MB (an SL55 AMG), and Audi (an S6 Avant) with persistent problems that ultimately caused me to dump the cars earlier than I would have otherwise. But I have never had anyone up the service chains of those brands, much less from their HQs, call to show this level of concern and desire to make things right.
So . . . now I wait to see how the first car is upon return from Roswell and how the second car is upon delivery. I had driven the first one enough to develop an addiction to the driving experience (just as with the Air four years ago). But it's been almost a year now since that first order was placed, and it's time we have one we can keep with us.
