I had the driver front tire replaced (covered by Pirelli) and all 5 of the lug covers have fallen off. Also, I removed one of the aero covers showing off the difference to the rims. It appears that road grime / grit gets between the inserts and the rims. This grit then works on the finish of the rim. Also, after putting that cover back on noticed another was not fully seated. Check all 25 found 10 that were no longer fully seated. I had a hood trim piece on order due to imperfection in the paint, Lucid is going to replace that piece this week and provide new lug covers.

That grit causing scratches is why I mentioned that one of the first things people should do upon delivery is take the covers off!

does that mean that the owners have to regularly check for grit?

Yep or keep them off

Do the 21-inch Grand Touring wheels have inserts? I’ve never looked at them closely at the Lucid Studios.

Yes, but according to the service tech, the GT wheels is 1 insert that comes out as 1 piece vs the DE wheels which are 5 per wheel

Wait a minute... help me understand what you are saying. "All 5 of the lug covers have fallen off." Really?? Can't tell from the photo precisely what the grit damage is and where it is, so I can inspect mine. Please.

That was a good call and highly recommended for anyone who wants to run without the inserts.

The aero covers for your wheels, pop them off and it'll be on the "outer" edge of where the covers were

Pull an aero cover off and scratches are on the painted black metal of the rim.

I think it means you need to take off covers when you take delivery or keep them on.
do you (or @hydbob ) think grit will enter even if you never take it off (like if it's always "factory sealed")? i'm not planning to take it off and i don't want to check for grit regularly on an car. if this is going to be a problem, i would rather get the 19" even though it doesn't look as good as the 21".

My GT 21" wheels do not come with inserts.
Really? I thought the entire black section spreading our radially from the center was an insert?

The inserts don‘t seal to the rim. It is inevitable that dirt will get between the rim and the insert. The inserts ”pop in” and “pop out” so will always have some amount of “play”. I think scratching of the painted surface is inevitable with this design As dirt will get in and the inserts will move around some.

Don't know how I feel about this. Might just go ahead and swap the 21" wheels back to 19" ones I ordered with the car. That insert is a single piece. Is the grit incursion and movement a problem with the DE 19" wheels too?

It's not a problem if you just keep the covers off:D. I personally think it looks better and I don't expect the range hit to be that much wit covers on or off, plus if I wanted the range I would have gotten the 19".

Unsure about the 19" maybe @Alex can chime in

The aero insert for the 19” wheels is a single piece and it looks like you need to remove the center cap to remove it, which I have never done. Each section does pop off, but is attached at the center. I have to pop off the section that is by the valve stem to help in filling the tires. I have not looked to see if any dirt accumulates to cause the finish to be marred. Since these are aero wheels, I will probably not be removing the insert, since I want the maximum range.
