BMW i7 EV - Reviews

for example .. here's what I look like [sort of] getting out of my Luci 🥴

;)
btw, something else that is an issue for me [but likely not for many others] is that since I have to swing the door wide open to get in, when I go to try to close the door I have a hard time reaching it to close it (my head being above the roof rail .. & can't bend my neck enough).. ugh!

I sat in the i7 yesterday at my local dealer. It is even worse than I thought. The interior is so over styled to a level of pimped excess I could not believe it.

The recent WSJ article on the i7 explained it was targeted for the Chinese market which is a chauffeur driven market at that price point. So the design starts to make more sense for that purpose, selling to Chinese billionaires.

Sounds like I'm in the minority here, but I think the i7 doesn't look too bad overall. The kidney bean grill is definitely not my favorite design choice, but I think it looks okay when it's blacked out. My impression is that the interior is going to feel nicer and more comfortable than the Air and that overall fit and finish will be better. I really like the idea of having a full set of massaging seats and a glass roof with a retractable shade, which I cannot have in my Touring. I'm actually planning on going into a dealership soon to see if I'm really interested. I'll probably stick with my Touring order, but the more complete luxury package of the i7 is appealing to me.
I7 range is pathetic, 300 miles. Push it and you get 230-240 mile? Only 540hp, and more expensive than the touring. No frunk, poorer handling, too big- imagine trying to park that thing. For me , touring was a no brainer- always buy EV from a EV maker. Not an ICE trying to make EV- they just don't get it or compromise in packaging/range.

Daily? Do you back into spaces so the trunk is blocked. I use the trunk first, then the frunk, so frunk on road trips only for the most part. I do have a few breakdown (tire patch) rain gear, jacket, gloves, in the bottom of the frunk so the trunk is 100% available for day to day use.
Do you reverse into your garage daily to load the trunk? When I go shopping I find it convenient to park a bit away from other cars for 2 reasons. Load the frunk and fully open the door to get in and out more easily without hitting the car next to mine. Also when I pull into the garage and open the frunk I can unload close to the garage fridge and door to enter the house.

But when you look under the bonnet and see there’s all this crap where a frunk should be, you’re reminded that ICE companies are still just converting their ICE designs into EVs without putting in the extra time to take advantage of everything an EV has to offer.
exactly this

The grille on this is at the edge of acceptability.

but on the wrong side of the edge; they went over it ... meaning it is unacceptable. The must have hired the same guy who did the Lexus grill.

... Lucid is a dedicated EV platform is one of the main things that drew me in to begin with.

Gee, it's almost as if the established auto mfgrs. are idiots, and never bothered to do an EV development division. It's been a decade since the Model S ... and this is the answer ?

Engineering early ICE vehicles: put a motor on a horse carriage. done. don't even need a roof.
Engineering early EVs: "let's put an 1890s trolley car traction motor in a Taurus and spend all our budget designing a hideous grill so people know it's the future and we hate it. "

... these ICE car owners just haven’t considered the benefits of a frunk, because they’ve never had one.
Dad bought his first VW beetle in 1959. Frunk. Beetle was a ground-up design.
Still, if I can get used to how to get my oversized frame into my Luci ...
Neighbor came over to see the car. I opened the door so he could see the interior and he just dove in head-first...got stuck half way in (he's a big guy and I am not so seat was up)...he's sweating and grunting and making a point... I'm pissed that he's taking a liberty uninvited... As he's struggling to extract himself I say: "Bill, this is a Lambo, not an Expedition (he has two ...no kids no dogs)."

It occurs to me that Amerikans don't want cars. Amerikans want jacked-up tanks with guns. I'm shopping for an electric bike that will fit in the Lucid. Lucid should look into this idea... an ebike that charges from / integrates with the Lucid (extends the range in the city!)

Three bump entry: bumps head getting in bumps head leaning out to get door handle bumps head pulling door shut.
every. single. time. I'm going to put the door on a tether so I can haul it in from inside the cabin... down to one bump entry!

I never understood people who back in = fumes in the house. But now it's so easy with the cameras and makes perfect sense.

lol .. I'm down to one bump .. (sort of) ..

getting in .. usually avoid the head scrape if I have enough room to scoot my "rear" in, but the other day, while rushing and door not opened all the way I gave myself a pretty good knock.

getting out .. now got used to it w/o hitting head (or scraping it) but need enough room for door to swing open (="strategic parking")

pulling door shut .. "Resolved" .. turns out I can pull the door shut by using the window crevice in front (has a plastic cover perfect for me to put my fingers in and get the door to move)

I've found when I get into the passenger side is the only time I bump my head. And that's because my wife sits up so high. On the driver's side, my seat is as low as it can get, and I never hit my head.

Maybe if Lucid ever provides an Easy Entry type feature, you could set your set to drop for entry and exit? And then come back up when you are ready to drive?

Not sure if that would make it harder on your legs to get in, though.

I'd love to have Easy Entry/Exit .. it can't hurt .. that's why Easy Entry/Exit is takes the no. 1 spot on my OTA update wishlist (w/ CarPlay not far behind).

I tried creating a profile "Exit" that I could select when exiting the car, but the way profiles (and seat restore) works on the Lucid, it's not a great solution (and takes forever .. and then sometimes upon approach my profile is recognized on approach and my seat is restored before I even get in).

I may regret asking, but why do you always misspell America? I legitimately don’t understand.

Maybe BMW will change course. For me, it’s just the grill. I love all the other styling aspects. Others may disagree.

Yeah...for $600K they will sell you an M4 with no bugs bunny grille! I finally gave up on BMW and traded in my 530e for a Genesis GV60. While I love the way BMWs drive, and the software is fine, I couldn't get past the ugly designs.

The other problem with the I7 is size...this monster is the size of Jeff Bezos' new yacht (well...not quite). I am not sure which behemoth is bigger...the I7 or the Hummer EV.

Part of the problem here is that the I7 is an electrified version of the 7 series rather than a EV designed from the ground up. My GV60 is tiny on the outside (177" long, 74 inches wide) but big on the inside (the wheelbase is larger than that of the Teluride). This is one of the benefits of the skateboard design of true EVs. If BMW designed this from the ground up, they could have provided the same interior space with a smaller exterior space.

I think the Lucid is large. The I7 is almost a foot and a half longer.

At my age and physical condition, this was one of the reasons I made the decision to drop my reservation for the Pure and picked up the GV60. Easy exit/entry and the seat height is at the exact right height for me. With a hip replacement scheduled for next week, that was important to me.

I’ve found the grill absolutely grows on you. My wife liked it from day one. I find the overall styling of my i4 to be very nice.

For me it’s got to be a sedan, I’m just not crazy about SUV styling or handling.

It may soon absorb you, lol, if it keeps growing much more

Once you put the front license plate on, the grill does not look that bad. Like Lucken, stated, it tends to grow on you. What's really bad are the Lexus grills. Awful.

Though I still think Lucid's approach to the grille looks better, I think the giant BMW grilles actually look decent in person. And the i7 looks stately for the modern era IMHO. A matter of taste. Remember the uproar from the first Chris Bangle designs?

The i7 is very upright, as a executive sedan should. The s class is how not to do it, too rounded.

Don’t know if you saw Doug’s video, but at one point he pops the hood and shows what’s underneath. And it’s a steaming pile of crap where the frunk should be.

If you look at that giant front end of the car, the passenger compartment area starts well behind the front wheels. It’s basically the opposite of Lucid’s Space Concept. That’s what I mean about wasted space.

Sure, there’s technically more room inside the i7, but the car has to be two class sizes longer in order to achieve that. Because it’s a converted ICE design.
And now we have people praising the i5 design with all of the same design compromises 😢.

It seems BMW is going to stick to their guns on this.

I really thought the range would be better in the BMW i5. Very disappointing.
I was both disappointed & relieved. When I confirmed my Touring order I had some concern over it & the Model S being the only viable options to choose from at the time (my opinion) & the i5 & A6 e-tron releases pending. My concern was that i5 & A6 would have 400+ miles of range, a good ride, + better tech at a lower price. Seeing the i5 styling & range definitely eliminates that concern as far as BMW is concerned...but still jealous of their ADAS capabilities compared to Lucid's basic ADAS features.
