I had to drive 45 miles to pick up family at the New Haven airport during the gale-force-winds storm last week in my AGT, and the road conditions were terrible. I had been driving the car for a couple days (away from home, so no overnight “top-ups”) and was at about 57% when I started out at 8:00AM. Incredible winds with trucks all over the road, and aside from a couple really strong gusts, the car was really planted. There was one tense moment when I hit some standing water, and my passenger, I swear, thought we were going to die, but the car went straight through without any issues – thank you low center of gravity and heavy weight. He still couldn’t believe the stability. (His described his car as having the aerodynamics of a billboard in this weather.) So, en route we found out the flight was delayed and delayed again. We arrived at New Haven, but there were incredible turbulence and high winds, so the flight was diverted to Hartford. Off we trekked to Hartford, which was about 55 miles away. We made it about halfway there and were told they were giving New Haven another shot, so we turned around. Got close to New Haven and they once again diverted to Hartford…. Back on the road. More drama over uncertainty on location, but they finally did land in Hartford (a couple medical emergencies on board delayed deplaning, but they finally got their luggage around 1:30). It was another hour and a half drive to get them to their destination, so I didn’t get back to our starting point till about 3:30PM, and I was down to 12% and looking for chargers. A couple close-by locations had pitiful speed, but there were 4 EA prototypes (had 400 kW and both NACS and CCS hands) that worked flawlessly at another farther stop (which did not appear in the Plugshare app) – 315 kWh max speed and I was up to 80% in about 30 minutes, thankfully.
This was only the second or third time in 3+ years with this car that I have had range anxiety, which is why I opted for the AGT. Until they step up their game in the charging infrastructure, there is no way I would buy an EV without AT LEAST a 400-mile range and the higher charging speed capability keeping in mind that winter and weather can even eat away at that. The massaging seats made the hours in the car much more comfy, though.
The one down-point was that my frunk would not close completely after loading the car at the airport, and a reboot left only the left-most third of the glass cockpit working and the pilot screen blank. Customer Service answered within 2 minutes, helped troubleshoot and I was on my way. This is the first time this ever happened, so I’m wondering if the rain and wind had an impact.
