Drivers, Windshields and HUD signal and noise.

Cars have dark dashes to limit dash reflection ghosts in the windshield. All cars have light conditions that cause visible reflections of dash. Chrome, vents, contrasting stitching and shadows from multilevel dashes and even varying dash surface textures project project.

On the small HUD projector on my son’s S class MB, the only reflection on the windshield was the HUD projected data. I call this a noticeable ‘signal’ imposed on the signals of the relevant view of the road and its surroundings. There was no other visual from the HUD. No ‘noise’.

In the early Dream Edition iteration of HUD there I saw a light white ‘greyed’ rectangle reflection ie a very consistent reflection of the larger projector surface. I assume ( usually not a good thing) that physical warping distorted this rectangle into the ‘orb ghosts’ that others saw.

On a recent build Gravity with HUD (I did not sit in but looked at through a n open side window) It was clear that the frame of the HUD was very clear sharply and it seemed unavoidably projected on the windshield. I could not tell if the screen projection partially ‘greyed’ the large rectangular shape inside that frame.

I categorized all of this, the greyed rectangle and even the visible frame as visual ‘noise’. Noise that your brain ‘filters’.

Interested in learning just how much secondary reflection persists in the recently delivered HUDs.

Note: a common Neurosensory phenomena for humans, signal to noise filtering declines as we age. (that is the reason many hearing aids are abandoned to a life in the patient’s dresser draw.)

And yes, I am old ( but have not yet retired my hearing aids to li in a drawer).

I concur.
We haven't noticed any HUD projection artifact in our EQS

Much smaller HUD displays I have seen in others have floated the data signal without much if any reflective grey noise.

I am wondering if Gravity HUDs that have whatever LUCID corrected to rid current production of the early HUD orb ghosting, has that also corrected the large greying out rectangle (reflections) directly in the driver field of view?

I know this is easy to see through for most drivers, just want to know what to expect.

( and maybe speed up the delivery of my order by foregoing HUD)

My biggest problem with HUD is that it doesn’t go low enough for my eyes which are too high for this to work. Also at high noon or thereabouts… when sun is high… get occasional blinding reflections from the concave mirror of the hud… for my current trip gonna take the old floor mat to throw over it when this occurs because of direction of travel for extended periods

You can turn off the HUD display & in the same section you can adjust the HUD displays height

I am aware of the switch and the adjustments… but at its lowest it is not low enough for my eyes. Switching it off doesn’t stop the convex mirror from reflecting the sun from certain angles. Try driving in middle the day in a circle… you will find the sun in your eyes every so often. The projector mirror reflects the sun into your eyes every so often. Might need a higher edge around it…

I had hoped the newer inventory HUDs would be worth waiting for. Sounds like they're not. Maybe I should drop the tech package and use the money to switch my DDPremium to DDPro. DDPro is a software issue likely to be resolved in a few years while the HUD hardware is what it is and no software is going to fix its major problems. Do you think there's any hope for the HUD?

Has Lucid actually confirmed the HUD has been updated to resolve the reflective issues? I know they’re looking into it but wasn’t aware a fix has happened yet.

Silence is not golden. I have gotten no answer.

This is an issue that is the vendors primarily.

Here is a quick solutionfor drivers to try: POLARIZED sun glasses. Often easier than mat on dash ( but often not as good).

Likely to ameliorate dash reflections but sunglasses polarization models have variable design and efficacy.

And remember they eliminate ‘signal’ as well as ‘noise’ .

Polarizing film on the windshield could help too but is dangerous. It’s all geometry. Move the eye level and therefore angle of view and you eliminate signal .

The framing of the drop in model HUD is shared responsibility ie Lucid and vendor- kind of like an under counter sink does not have trim to catch dirt but is harder to install. The framing seems to add to the ‘dash reflections’ which are common.

Dash reflections have impact. in my AGT I actually taped over some chrome that reflects in side view mirrors as a nearly vertical bar: behaviorally the mind reads this as a limit or frame and attention/cognitive recognition in that outboard segment is reduced. No reflection and I have a larger field of view just like the designers intended.

I posed the question re HUD changes to LUCID sales and service “ what was changed” BUT no one knows. ITS A BLACK BOX. And while not high priority I am sure they went up the line and also got no answer.

The HUD vendor is ???

Sometimes I have been able to get to the engineers who really know stuff (often getting first to the academic who taught them or bossed them).

PS: anyone want to engineer a motorized ‘dash mat screen’ like the rear window screens? What a can of worms that would be.

Got it, I wear polarized glasses - didn't experience the sun reflecting into my eyes.
Probably adjust your seat higher, I know this doesn't entirely resolve the HUD display to be viewed lower.

Does anyone who is currently driving a Gravity w/ HUD love the HUD? I get the impression that a few here have had more significant problems with it, and some owners have chimed in saying they aren't seeing annoying reflections. But I don't think I've heard anyone say that they really like the HUD. Maybe that's because its value is presently unrealized, waiting for the AR features to arrive some day?

Thank you. Very helpful. One more question. When you less dash reflection( I include the rectangle in dash reflection noise) and you are using HUD, does the rectangle disappear? Or does its signal display ( speed for one) always have something of the grey rectangle with speed someplace in the middle of it?

Thanks.

PS. As a sailer I have multiple polarized sunglasses, Ray Ban, Serengeti, and Revo. They all slightly differ in efficacy of removing dash reflection noise. And in my son’s MB S class, some allowed me to see the faint HUD. Best for seeing HUD were borrowed Randolph partial and some specific Zeiss for HUD.

At this point in time it's just a basic HUD. The real question is, how long will Lucid take to get the AR features enabled because if it's a year or so away then the HUD really isn't worth it in my opinion. Especially when the cockpit screen is actually quite large and unobscured by the steering wheel.

I ordered a car with HUD but switched to Power Pack only after the HUD delay. I actually wanted the HUD because, as an old guy, my close vision isn’t great anymore and a HUD would ameliorate the problem of not being able to read the Nav directions easily on a screen by placing the focal distance further away.

While the Clearview Cockpit screen’s focal distance is still closer than the HUD would be, I’ve found it to work fine for me. My Tesla Model Y’s screen is just too close to my face to be able to reliably read it without straining and spending too much time trying to read the information. Given the issues that the HUD seems to be presenting and the lack of the AR features so far, I have no regrets about deleting the Tech Package at the moment. I might have some FOMO at some point in the future but I doubt it.

In the future if we end up loving the Gravity (once these annoying software bugs are solved) then I might choose to buy a new one with whatever newer technology is available at the time as long as Lucid is a going concern. The car DRIVES wonderfully. Maybe my favorite family car ever and up there as one of my favorite cars of any category ever. But the reliability issues for me are already very enjoying even in the first month.

At the moment my HUD display speed, speed limit, vehicles in blind spot alert, turn by turn navigation.
What other AR features is expected?

Having blithely missed exits for superchargers when my M3 was down to single digits and nervously eked my way back to the only supercharger for 50+ miles--I want that HUD in my face. 😦😬

In some of the promo videos it showed the ability to track cars on the road and also draw out lane changes onto the road itself during autonomous driving.

Was it supposed to also move the turn directional arrows with the scene à la Augmented Reality? I guess I never checked but I sort of assumed that was a feature of an AR HUD, but now I already have a Gravity without it.

Ah got it, this one? https://lucidmotors.com/media/video/gravity-family/lucid-gravity-desktop-10.mp4
This is my first HUD, initial thoughts on a long highway drive as the vibration of the dash can cause nausea especially if you get motion sickness easily when viewing the HUD display.
But subsequent drives it didn't bother me anymore & I can't imagine not having it - plus you can turn it off & enable it after you put it in park

Agreed.
