I am unclear about Tesla charging stations. Can we pull up to any Tesla charger, use a suitable adapter and start charging? If not, what’s the point of the Tesla tap ?

The adapters only work for Level 2 charging. Yes you should be able to use any Tesla Level 2 destination charger with an adapter.

No restrictions? Does their software recognize and accept non-Tesla cars?

The level 2 communication is common between J1772 and Tesla. There may be some unique exceptions but most will work just fine.

How do you pay for it? At the charger or do we need a Tesla account ?

One more thing. What’s a destination charger?

Depends on the charger. Some are free, others not. All run thru the Tesla app unless it's a friend's garage charger. You pay thru the app, either way...

Destination chargers look something like this...

And this is only at the destination chargers ? Doesn’t work at superchargers?

The only way you can use a supercharger currently is if you're close to a location that has the MagicDock, though you'll be limited to 50kW speeds as others have noted in other threads. They're only at a few spots currently in NY, CA and TX.

Relevant exception: TeslaTap had a chip that mimics a Tesla, allowing you to use even destination chargers that limit it to only Tesla vehicles. Nearly all don’t, but a few may, as it’s an option the owner can set.

Lectron and other adapters usually don’t have that chip, as I understand it.
