Steering Wheel detached

My friends Range Rover was two blocks from my house when his entire real axel fell off (yep, it looked as bad as what you picture in your mind hearing that).

I was in my Fiat, took a hard turn, and the drivers seat broke off and deposited me in the passenger seat (fortunately able to get back into a position where I could steer and stop quickly).

All those happened decades ago. Not that I don't believe the OP, but a picture would a helpful verification.

Lucky for me no one was coming as a I blew through a stop sign before I figured that shutting it off was my only hope and it thankfully worked. Always an adventure in that car.

My 1956 Mercury (the one in the picture) did that to me once on Route 17 in Paramus NJ. There was a small clip that held the throttle cable where it attached at the side of the Carb. That clip had fallen off and the throttle went full on due to its spring. That was a very poor design - normally on vs normally off.

We had a piece of linoleum covering a huge hole under the pedals in our '76 Pinto station wagon. We lived in an area with frequent flash floods so we'd go through intersections and the entire left side of the car would fill with several inches of water. Good times...

Klick and Klack called some of these cars: "Made of cardboard held together with rust." They or someone else stated that the Yugo was something like the country it came from.... Falling apart.

You honestly have the worst luck in the world. It’s reached the point where it’s actually uncanny—bad luck just has a way of finding you.
 
I can vouch for the original poster; his steering wheel did come off as he described. The car was towed to the San Jose Service Center and is being returned to him tomorrow. Definitely a very serious event and will require some intensive followup to determine how it happened.

It's a good sign, means Lucid about to launch hands free driving, no wheel needed
