Hearing Scout motors for the first time...
 
As much as I want to see Lucid improve and execute better than they have at times, I think the last year has shown just how hard it is to even get an EV to market, much less do it well and deliver it with specifications that are many years behind the times.
 
I'm interested in both the scout and the midsize. Hope Lucid doesn't have to delay as well.
 
Wow, what a mess. So they decided to pivot hard with the EREV plan based on reservation figures. Now they have alienated anyone interested in the full BEV version and by the time the EREV arrives, the original reservation holders likely forgot about it.

They were better off releasing the BEV version first just to get some brand recognition and then allow time for the EREV to fully cook and release later. I’m sure the powers that be at VW saw the reservation numbers and and did a hard pivot chasing greed. Now that will probably doom the whole company. Extremely sad. I loved the looks and ideas behind it. Wouldn’t be surprised if this is shelved altogether and the ideas just go to over to other VW products or Rivian.
 
I have an early reservation for the Scout SUV. If I really needed it right now I would just go get a Rivian since it’s basically the same, but the Scout has the option of the range extender gas engine.
 
I must be weird, but the whole EREV thing leave me cold. I don't want a gas engine anywhere near my electric vehicle. This isn't an environmental thing either, it's a simplicity thing. It just feels like a crazy kludge to bolt a gas generator to an electric powertrain just in case you can't get to charging. I'll wait for better battery technology, and better charging systems... which, hey, who knows might even be here by 2030!

Yeah, I feel the same, having an EREV is the worst of both worlds.

BMW has done it forever - not sure what the issue is. What’s the difference between this and any other hybrid?

EREVs are propelled solely by electric motors, with the engine acting only as a generator to recharge the battery.

PHEVs use both the engine and motor to power wheels, typically with a smaller electric range.

Yes EREV is a hybrid solution and only really makes sense for heavier vehicles that would tow, as battery technology and charging isn't there yet. Otherwise you make a giant battery and everything is negatively affected including ever making money. Since BYD and Geely can already charge batteries in 4 minutes, the lifetime of a transient technology like EREV is very short and probably not viable.

A large portion of Scout reservation holders would disagree. I think the EREV is better than the a traditional hybrid. It is much easier to make a very efficient motor for a generator running at a single speed than a drive system motor that requires variable speeds and a transmission. The EREV gives pure electric drive around town and matches an ICE for convenience on road trips. If you find hotels with L2 charging, the EREV still provides morning pure electric driving that can lower your overall fuel cost. I agree that ultimately BEVs will win, but that is likely after solid state batteries and charging infrastructure becomes very wide spread especially in more rural areas.

Well, Scout has been having issues with heat...they are finding it difficult to efficiently engineer the vehicle. EREV will be a temporary phase until we get proper Solid state batteries. Having an engine power batteries is super inefficient and complicated. I don't see how EREV benefits...just buy a cheaper ICE pickup until we get the battery tech sorted out.
 
I definitely see the appeal of an EREV, but primarily in scenarios where a BEV just doesn't cut it. For example, I own a Ram 2500 and use it to pull a ~12500 lb trailer that has a frontal area 8.5' wide x 10.5' tall. The Ram gets truly terrible gas mileage when I'm towing (~6 MPG), and I'm not holding my breath for a BEV that would do a good job with it. Add in the headache of most charging sites requiring me to find somewhere to drop the trailer, go charge, and then come back and hook the trailer back up. The Ram 1500 REV (formerly Ramcharger) would give me the towing capability I need, while offering plentiful electric range for the majority of drives when I'm not towing.
