Rivian review by CR

Have you driven one? I have bad news for you once Consumer Reports finishes their review of the Gravity, as they are also ready to tear it a new one. I saw a short of a guy from CR just complaining about the blank screens and not a good sign of things to come from them. Major car reviewers seem to have a hard on to hate on EVs. Seems to be the cool thing to do nowadays.
I have a Rivian and it handles well (for its size), its not "cramped" - probably midsize class average and it makes some noises, but again, YMMV on that. The Gravity has a much better ride and is quieter as a whole, but I don't see what punching down Rivian does for it. I like different things about each, and the Gravity Concept X would be my perfect car.
I don't know why as a society we have become so tribal. Two things can be great. Personally, I'm rooting for the success of all these EV companies as competition is pushing them to make better cars.

I
did drive the pick up, felt like I was riding on a horse. Interior too plasticky compared to Lucid. The Gen 2 R1S was cheaply made compared to Gen 1 to cut costs. Compared to the Gravity, not as refined in my opinion.

That's fair. The ride does leave a lot to be desired, at this point just being part of its personality. Has slightly gotten better with software updates, but the Gravity is leagues more refined across the board.

Because for most people, to win means someone has to lose. And a lot of people have an irrational emotional connection to their car and feel the need to defend it as if the car cares.
I’m in sales and never mention any of my competitors, either in good or bad way - they don’t pay my salary. If my pitch is “look how bad my competition is”, I add zero value.
Related - my wife was looking at new Range Rover Sports and Defenders. I told the sales guy that my main concern was that RR has been at the absolute bottom of reliability rankings for years, and his answer was to pull up Google results showing recalls from Ford and Honda. That was the end of us looking RR - that guy needs some skills training.
Like I said, to each his own, and my impression of the Rivian is completely positive. Except for the cartoon headlights.

To be fair, when some people on this forum have complained about the software problems with Gravity, some current/past Air owners have responded with, “Gravity software issues are nowhere near as bad as Air was at launch” thinking that would actually make current Gravity owners feel better somehow.
I guess I'm in the minority but I like the Rivian headlights. I love the Lucid Air - one of the nicest looking cars out there, but I hate the look of the Gravity. But then again, some people like the Cyber Truck but I think that's also horrible.

Exactly - I actually told him if that’s the best defense he had for RR, it didn’t help one bit. I wonder why he never followed up with us after our two test drives……

It looks truly goofy facing you at night in a left hand turn lane with the signal on....the Lucid looks amazing at night coming towards you.
Gravity design was based on maximum range/space efficiency. Building a box like Rivian would mean much less range.
We all got spoiled by Detroit gas guzzler designs. Lucid if forward looking.

Haven’t driven the Gravity because I don’t need one. I have a ‘22 Launch Edition R1S and the same year Air GT. Obviously two different vehicles for different purposes. What I can say is the Rivian does what I expect and doesn’t do what I don’t expect far more frequently than my Air. I absolutely love driving the Air, but waiting for it to unlock, getting squished because it goes to my wife’s profile instead of mine, fussing with the UX to get it to play the music I want…..not so much. (And those plastic steering wheel buttons! Nope) I don’t even notice the Rivian’s headlights any more. If others do…meh.
I too have an Air (‘25 Touring) and R1S (‘26) and couldn’t agree more with the above. The tech of the Rivian is far superior to the Air. Where the Air wins is in its beautiful design, something IMO which the Gravity is missing. While I understand that the Gravity may be designed for max range and efficiency, people won’t care if they think the car is ugly (or looks like a mini van). Also, the R1S with max battery has pretty close to the same range as the Gravity.

That's quite a sales pitch for a $125K+ car. I can't imagine why more car reviewers don't use it.

I think tribalism is just part of human nature; a separate discussion itself.
Total agreement on your statements.
Bottom line: buy/lease what works for you. After all, it's your money. Attempt to understand and respect the decisions of others. You may learn something along the way.

That’s not why this is said, and that should be quite obvious if you think about it for more than half a second. People don’t say this to imply that Gravity owners should feel better their cars have issues, but to suggest that it will improve, just as it did for the Air, which did have worse software when it launched.
Whether that makes you feel better or not is up to you, but it’s forward-looking and hopeful, not excusing the present state.
That seems quite obvious to me.
