Rivian Q1 2026 earnings- half came from Amazon

It's simple if you ask me. The product works.

More of a winning formula than trying to be the best at everything. This is why Toyota does so well. No one would call them innovative but they focus on reliability and making sure the vehicles work as expected and their sales and reputation do so accordingly.

I sense you dislike Rivian, that is fine, to each their own, but the R2 has a bright path ahead - people like boxy SUVs. Not much of that in the EV space and I don't foresee the Cosmo being that boxy. The Cosmo will likely eat more into the Model Y sales than the R2.

As for what is special about the R2 - it is touting some really good efficiency and potential reliability due to less complexity. All at a price that is attainable (not affordable for most still, if we are being honest). Just a great overall package of price, tech, performance and hopefully reliability. That is a winner in most people's book. I have a reservation for one for all those reasons.

Lucid has notoriously taken a lot more than they can chew. Love to see their ideas and push for innovation, but undeniably has led to a lot of stuff being broken along the way. Hopefully they have learned and some simplification does come with the midsize products. No one is going to be impressed with how much is promised if things don't work.
I’m talking about innovation, I don’t see much at Rivian.

Still using 400V architecture? Easy route is easy.

Lucid is expanding international foot print, Rivian is a domestic brand so far with tech partnership with VW trying to monetize their tech globally that way.
Rivian is eyeing European expansion in the next few years. This is a good move. While Lucid can claim to be international, this does go with my notion that they are trying to do too much at once. Until their midsize is released, I don't foresee sales being much better abroad for the Air or the Gravity than here in the states.

We can agree there. Would have loved to see 800v from them, but then again, that would have likely upped the price. Doesn't mean it won't come later though and RJ has already hinted as much but I'd imagine it would likely come to the R1 line first.

Innovation is nice, for sure, but it is not ultimately what is going to make these companies profitable. They need to walk before they can run. Rivian is focusing on profitability. I'm sure we will see more fun ideas from them over time, but surviving is their most important goal and quite frankly, it should also be for Lucid.

Don't get me wrong though. People have been very vocal on the Rivian forum about wanting more from the R2, but there is only so much that could have been done given price constraint and promised price.

Has anyone else noticed that, when discussing US EVs, RJ has omitted Lucid in every conversation and usually only mentions Tesla? One example from an interview this week:
  • He essentially declared that Rivian and Tesla are the only two companies that have successfully moved towards software defined vehicles. In particular, mentioning how few ECUs they both use. Lucid has done this from day one and only has 3 ECUs on their Cosmos vs. 7 on the R2.
Seems odd. Maybe he just doesn't want to give Lucid free advertising?

It makes for better optics to compare your spunky new company to iconic market volume / "technology" leaders, rather than to a less-known manufacturer with a fraction of your own sales volume.

Do you want him to mention Polestar and Vinfast too? Everyone knows Tesla, this is why he keeps bringing them up. While Lucid wants to be part of the "software" defined gang, their reputation has amounted to anything but. I don't think its intentional, but I don't think Rivian wants to be looped into that camp. The Cosmos is not out yet or even revealed. The R2 is out next month to consumers. Lucid can tout all day long about how great and game changing the the midsize platform will be, but until we have proof of concept, I don't know why anyone else would bring it up as a game changer.

Rivian is on a different path than Lucid. With the Amazon delivery vans (~30,000 units in US and Europe) and VW deal, I think Rivian is poised to expand its service outside the US. I don't think the R1T and R1S are suitable for the European market, but the R2 might be. We shall see!
