Tesla model 3 2020
I ve been driving my Gravity GGT for the last two weeks. The range has been very poor. I ve been getting around 2.54 mi/kwh. About 250 miles on a full charge. It’s a 7 seater with 21/22 tires. I don’t speed and I drive mostly on flat surfaces. This is much worse than my model 3 which is 6 yrs old. Any ideas what could be wrong?

The Gravity is a much more massive vehicle than the Model 3 and weighs considerably more. Our LR RWD M3 can get over 4 miles/kWh when driven conservatively. My Gravity so far is averaging over 3 miles/kWh in mixed driving. So it’s not too bad considering the difference in size and mass.

2.54 mi/kwh * 123kwh == 312 miles range. Was the 250 mile range you reported as measured or calculated from the mi/kwh?

To maximize the range, you need to reduce the weight by removing the third row to make it a 5 seater, 20”F/21”R tires, and slow down.

Your Gravity weighs around 5,966 lbs while a Model 3 weighs about 3,862 lbs.

One is small and light, the other one is big and heavy.

In general, don't count on the official EPA numbers. Expect much less in real driving because not many people drive 55mph in an 85mph zone.

Plus the wind resistance of the Gravity is much greater than the Model 3's. I mean, the frontal area of the Gravity is nearly 3x that of the Model 3. Even with the great Cd of the Gravity it'll never be nearly as slippery as a small, aerodynamic sedan.

I wouldn't judge it yet until you put some miles on it.

From the Gravity owner's manual, page 101:

NOTE: Efficiency is suboptimal during the early life of the vehicle (approximately the first 2000 miles of driving).

In addition to the 2k mile break in period (which I also saw on Air), what ambient temps and tire pressure are you at? I’m gettin 3.18 mi/kwh on Gravity DE 20/21 wheels at 65 F and 44 psi but will definitely get worse with temps dropping in New England.

Measured. To test it, I charged to 100%( usually only charge to 80) and drove till I got only 4% left.

I understand. But I feel like getting 250 miles is far from the 386 miles that my car is rated for. Also there are times when my car is just parked and turned off. The battery drains like 5 to 6 % over a few hours. Doesn’t happen all the time but sometimes. I initially thought I might have forgotten to turn the hvac off or something. But since then I ve been paying attention and making sure the car is locked and everything is off before I walk away from the car. Still happens.

Oh. I didn’t know that. I ll keep monitoring it then.

I am still at around 500 miles. 44 psi and ambient temp 55 to 60.

It’s 117-118 usable. Dynamic Range = Rated Range at 3.30 mi/kwh in my Gravity.

Lucids spec sheet (I think I saw at studio in Tysons) shows Seven seater is 170+/- lbs heavier - just as some guidance. Definitely not the 500lb swag EPA uses to estimate mileage.

Are you in “smooth”? Just being in swift or sprint reduces efficiency as it increases the available HP. I’ve noticed this. It’s good for a .1-.15 reduction or so on mi/kWh.

I easily get just above 3 driving around town and lots on highways with plenty of “spirited” driving on 21/22 in a 7 seater on high regen in swift most of the time. Also, I use creature comfort a lot - which isn’t very efficient.

What does your energy chart say about usage? It’s a helpful place to look.

Ambient temp as well as climate usage can play a role.
I use smooth most of the time. For this last test I used it 100%. I don’t use creature comfort at all.

This drain should not happen. Something is wrong there and maybe your car is staying on with the climate or something. I've never seen any drain like this in mine nor heard of anyone until yours mention it. Maybe you have proximity unlock on and you are not getting the key far away enough? I don't know. Maybe time to call service about that.

Yeah that phantom drain is not normal, turn off proximity lock/unlock and use fob buttons to unlock vehicle and see if that helps. Turn off WiFi too to make sure it’s not stuck downloading some huge offline map or something. I’d also do the long steering wheel reset to make sure. Hard to guess what else could be causing it but that’s definitely not normal.

Definitely check your energy chart

- buys huge wheels
- wonders why range is affected

Increasing tire size massively impacts range in a negative way on any EV. I do not understand why everyone is so horny for bigger tires, especially if they’re going to then complain about range.

Buying larger sized wheels was not out of choice. I needed a car sooner rather than later and I picked an inventory car that was a close match to what I wanted. Only difference was the wheel size.

Also…I understand that bigger wheels affect range. But the reduction in range in my car has been out of proportion from what’s expected. Bigger tires shouldn’t cause increased battery drain while idle and parked…

I ve had proximity lock turned off since day 1. I haven’t tried a hard reset though. I might as well try that.
