Out of Spec 3 Row EV race - Lucid Gravity driven by Kyle

I’m jealous of you all getting 3mi/kwh. I’m not close. And I do t believe I’m driving fast or particularly spiritedly. I’m always in smooth, driving highways and secondary roads more or less at the speed limit (it’s hard to go 70 in rush hour traffic and most of my daily commute is in 45-50mph roads.

I’m hoping that things improve after 2k miles but I’m beginning to be concerned that I might have a drive unit issue.

For reference, although I don’t have a true “lifetime” mpkwh reading, my 2017 Tesla S has achieved 3.14 miles Per kWh over the last ~60k miles of driving. My Gravity so far is at 2.58.

Same driver, same roads, same style of driving, different cars. I know the Gravity is (quite a bit) larger and heavier. But I don’t think I expected the Gravity to come in at 18% less efficiency overall.

We’ll see what develops over the next few thousand miles, and who knows, perhaps I do have a real drive issue…. 😦

You’re not on the Hankook 20/21s though so your efficiency will be less cuz higher rolling resistance.

Model S coefficient of drag = .208, frontal area = 25.2 square feet, resulting drag area = 6.2 square feet
Lucid Gravity coefficient of drag = .24, frontal area = ~31 square feet, resulting drag area = 7.44 square feet (20% greater).
2017 model S curb weight ~4650 lbs
Lucid Gravity curb weight ~6100 lbs (31% greater).

You upgraded to a much bigger house- it’ll take more energy. Given 20% more drag and 31% more mass getting back to just 18% more energy used required substantial gains in efficiency elsewhere- rolling resistance, electrical and mechanical losses, etc. And Tesla didn’t leave a ton on the table… From my perspective yours is actually a pretty good result.
 
The only stat I've heard so far that's got even close to EPA is Edmund's 60/40 loop, never going above 55 mph, averaging 40 mph and they managed 400 miles (5 seater, smallest tires).

Edmunds are incompetent fools. I got what would have been 394 miles in a dream edition 7 seater 20/21 inch wheels at 65F going 70mph most of the distance. Here’s the proof. I used half the battery, went 197 miles That’s 95% EPA for Dream Edition on 20/21 wheels

There is no EV that will get close to rated range at those speeds. Period.

As many of us have shown, it’s quite easy to get rated, or better than rated range, but you can’t drive 75+, or even 70+.

Not the best thread to go back and forth about range, but as I’ve mentioned, I can easily get 3.30mi/kWh as long as conditions are okay. Not ideal, but okay.

My X and R1S have never hit their rated numbers - same drives and driver. YMMV.

I’ve also done 500 miles over the course of a weekend and gotten north of 3.1 overall averaging 70-75 with some stretches of 80. Rising the 20/21. As I mentioned elsewhere, when I’m at 65-70 I’ve seen the efficiency higher than 3.3, so EPA is definitely feasible. Would also recommend folks look at the range screen in the center console which will show what is impacting range, with things like elevation, speed and climate being a factor, among others.
 
Thanks for your videos by the way, you helped me learn that 3.3.9 somehow magically fixed my keycards not working even though that’s not what the update was for. And now I put my Uniden R8 where yours is and EZ pass in the left A pillar window because I was getting a crazy number of false radar alerts due to the mirror sensors triggering it right in the same Ka 33-34 band cops use.

Well it appears Kyle finally did it: he made a video that isn’t long enough!

That's noteworthy - both Gravitys made the same BMS error.
 
To be fair, he said that many/most EVs will have this type of error if repeatedly driven and DC fast charged without any rest time. The BMS never gets a chance to recalibrate until the very end, so errors accumulate.

It happened under a very unlikely set of driving conditions. A possibility to be aware of though.
I think it's safe to assume that Lucid engineering is having a look at this result.
