Hello everyone!

I'm excited to join the Lucid community as a soon-to-be Gravity owner. I've been driving electric since 2017 and am currently trading in my 2023 Model X for what will be my first Lucid.

Living in the East Bay in the San Francisco Bay Area, I recently stopped by the Newark headquarters showroom with my wife to look at the Gravity. It was a prototype, and non-functional though gave us a pretty good idea about sizing. Though we would have loved to see it in action, climb in the back seats, etc. My significant other was impressed, so we put down a deposit for a Gravity Grand Touring with HUD and would wait the fall availability time. However, I mentioned to the team that I'd be interested if a Dream Edition became available as we usually purchase our vehicles fully optioned. Though on the website, it was not available to purchase. To my pleasant surprise, the showroom manager reached out today offering to upgrade my reservation to the Dream Edition as it appears an individual canceled in configuration we wanted (Aurora Green, Yosemite, 20/21" Wheels) and updated our portal to reflect the change.

I am very late to the game. Candidly I had no idea this vehicle existed until we began our search for a SUV that is larger to accommodate our family. Moreover we are not impressed with the Model X and all of the issues we have had since taking ownership. We are going to loose quite a bit on getting rid of the vehicle, though in the end we are exited that this SUV is best in class by far. We test drove all other competitors (Rivian, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Cadillac. etc..). We will know for certain once we have completed our test drive scheduled for next week in Newark.

Looking forward to being part of this community and eventually sharing my own experiences once I take delivery!

Welcome to the fam. If you can’t wait and want to get a test drive in I believe the Santa Clara (Valley Fair) store has a GGT to test drive (I think they’ve got a permanent one)

Funnily enough, a Model X owner came over to me while I was charging at a Supercharger the other day and said he couldn’t wait to get rid of his X but thought the Gravity was a unicorn that didn’t really exist. After looking at the car and chatting for about 30 mins it seems he was off home to order a Gravity also as his lease was up in about 6 months. I wonder how many X owners are going to be Gravity converts soon.

The X is flawed in some serious ways that immediately disqualify it for a lot of people, us included. The falcon doors are an example of Tesla’s “fix something that isn’t broken” mentality, just like removing the stalks. The Gravity, if it delivers all that promises, should definitely be able to pick up sales from folks disgusted with Tesla and ready for something else.

Thought I'd share a bit more context on why we're making the switch from our Model X, in case it helps others considering similar decisions. Though I believe I may be preaching to the choir in this forum.
  • 16 recalls since delivery - We've become regulars at the service center, which isn't how anyone wants to spend their time.
  • Paint issues - The paint rubbed completely away from the gull wing door inner sills due to misalignment. This meant 3 weeks in a body shop since Tesla doesn't handle body repairs themselves. Panel alignment issues in general have been an issue. I'm afraid in the future the doors will be a liability vs. enhanced ownership experience.
  • Cargo capacity - We recently took a family trip with 6 people in our captain's chair configuration. Despite the Model X's size, we had to squeeze suitcases between passengers because there wasn't enough cargo space. The frunk couldn't even fit a single full-size suitcase, only backpacks. This was the straw the broke the camels back to say which let us begin our search for other options. Not the only issue, just the final one.
  • The yoke - My wife despises it with the passion of a thousand suns. Hand-over-hand turning is a genuine safety concern for us. Does not have progressive steering.
  • Passenger confusion - Minor gripe, but literally no one who rides with us can figure out how to exit from the second row without help. Moreover the gull wing doors makes folks nervous entering / exiting the vehicle. Avoid hitting your head, etc.. especially in parking garages. Though we have never had an incident, so 🤷
  • Ride quality - The suspension is harsh and cabin noise is surprisingly loud for a vehicle at this price point.
  • Interior - It feels spartan rather than luxury, which doesn't align with what we paid.
There are a lot of positives with the experience, though these are gripes. These accumulating issues made us realize we wanted something different especially after getting hosed by resale value - we want to cut our losses and get out before it gets worse. Something that prioritizes quality, comfort, and genuine luxury. Everything we've seen from Lucid so far suggests they understand these priorities. Not to say we are motivated by resale as we pay for the cars entirely up front and we do not lease. It was one motivation to cut our losses, and get into a brand which aligns with what we look for in a vehicle.

Welcome aboard! This community is a tremendous resource. I learned so much about the Air before eventually buying one, the information served me well and vastly improved the initial ownership experience as I had a better understanding of what the car could do and some of the challenges it might present.

If it helps to set expectations, there are vastly different experiences when it comes to purchase, delivery, support and the ownership experience. Some people have significant issues with their cars, while others barely experience any issues. I had a highly flawed (actually disastrous) purchase experience which ultimately resulted in me purchasing a used vehicle from a Ford dealership of all places, knowing that I'd still receive excellent warranty support on the vehicle (which is precisely what has happened). The purchase was not great, but the service experience has been excellent. The car itself is life changing....no, really. If you appreciate a well-made vehicle and you care in the slightest about how cars drive, I suspect you'll be a very happy camper.

Develop a relationship with your service advisor. Get to know them and vice versa. Show patience and grace with them and you'll be amazed at the lengths they will go to help you out.

I rode in a new Model X a few months back and was shocked at how noisy the ride was and like you said, for the price point it felt quite cheap inside. It really seems like Tesla has given up on the S & X.

One additional thought...the Gravity you receive at delivery will not be the same Gravity you're driving in 12, 18, and 24+ months from now. The software will evolve over time. I've had my Air for a little over 1 year and many of the things I wish would've been changed in the software have indeed been changed. The sound system has _VASTLY_ improved (and they're not done yet). Dream Drive Pro has massively improved. Countless software tweaks, bug fixes and new features have been introduced as well. Understand that you're buying into a platform that evolves over time. There absolutely WILL be teething issues since you're buying the first iteration of a brand new model, but as long as you're aware of the compromises that exist when working with a new, disruptive car company compared to a traditional luxury manufacturer with MANY decades of experience, you should be in great shape and ready to enjoy the benefits that come with taking the leap into a truly new platform.

There's a reason people freak out about what it's like to drive these cars. I won't say I take it for granted....I enjoy just about every second behind the wheel....but the occasional ride in another vehicle (especially ICE vehicles) reminds me of how far apart the experience is.

Oh, since you're in the Bay Area, I suspect a rip along Skyline Drive, Woodside Road, Page Mill Rd, Alpine Road, and Pescadero Creek Rd could become a life changing experience for you. It was in my S2000 back in the day....I imagine doing it in the Air or Gravity would be equally spectacular.

I've been a regular at Alices, and all of SR 9, 84, 35, PCH and the others. The Bay Area is kind to drivers / riders. Though Stage Road / Tunitas / Pescadero has had a lot of gravel lately. ;) Looking forward to a long trip down HWY 1 to Carmel / Big Sur once we take delivery. Thanks for the advice. I agree that this is very much a beta program. Though as an early adopter (of sorts) to Tesla - I'm used to it. I'm holding my expectations for the HUD to be a -long- software development lifecycle. Though I did not want to miss out on the hardware as I cannot retrofit that. I can change the wheels, not the internals.

Yeah, the inability to open the door when you're inside is a pet peeve of mine about Teslas. More of a problem in the dark than in the daylight, and obviously a first-world problem. But every time I run into it, I think "jeeze, why fix something that wasn't broken?" If you own a Tesla, you quickly learn how it works, but passengers constantly struggle with it. Maybe this is a sign that everyone I know is hardly a spring chicken! 🤣

Welcome fellow X to Gravity convert. 1 thing the Gravity has huge con against it. Wife making sure I let the whole world know. If you're 5'1" or shorter and have short legs. Driver seating position will not be good. We have tried various adjustments, none work out. Her foot would dangle in the air when pressing brake and sometimes accelerator pedal. I think we got close with a seat cushion on top of the seat. it seems the thigh extension cushion might be culprit. when fully closed, it still have a couple inches sticking out, which leaves her leg in a suspended position when driving. we'll see, right now, she's not a fan. still driving the X Plaid, since despite all it's sparxe and now feel very dated interior, the driving position is perfect for her.

If your spouse or any other drive is short, make sure they try out the seat adjustments first. before committing, depending on who's the frequent driver. We have extra cars, so the Gravity is not relegated to main driving duty, however, I did originally plan for it to be her X replacement.

-iThinkEV-
P.S. - after daily'ing the Gravity for a week, just drove the X. the center display (in front of the steering wheel) feels so old and small. lol. I got accustomed to the cockpit display so quickly. the convenience of the left touch panel for those quick access actions. very nice.
P.S.S - I missed some of these Tesla features. Auto-shifting, self off turn signals. FSD (not a fan boy, but I do miss it). the acceleration of the Plaid.

Ouch. Yeah my co-worker has an X, I’m hoping I can convince him to switch to Gravity. I’ve had my Air since April 2022, and I won’t lie, it has had a lot of problems but they were all due to being early build, and most issues other owners have not had aside from Frunk latch mechanism and the occasional trim issue. The key thing in this is Lucid’s service has been spectacular, I just text them if there’s a problem, they get back to me with an appointment, and often just come get my car and give me a loaner Lucid as I’m an hour from their service center. I still love the Air but am very much looking forward to trading for the Gravity given the advances they’ve made. FWIW Lucid’s ADAS is not yet at Tesla’s capabilities, but that deserves the qualifier that Lucid’s LiDAR makes accelerating and slowing for other vehicles very smooth, much smoother than Tesla so while Tesla can do more, Lucid is more pleasant to use. Welcome aboard, keep us updated on your delivery!

How does Sprint mode acceleration in the Gravity compare to Plaid? I’m sure Plaid feels more like a rocket launch which is cool, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE Sprint mode in the Air as the throttle response feels like a yo-yo, like the car gets lighter and it’s just immediately darting to wherever you put it. My efficiency is terrible on purpose cuz I love Sprint mode so much haha.

Paging @joec since he has a very vertically-challenged wife.

I’m 5’3” and had no problem getting the seat set exactly like my Air in the demo GT at Natick, so I hope @iThinkEV can get a solution worked out for his wife that’s better than the Indiana Jones Temple of Doom platform shoes like Short Round had!

Hi There, and welcome to the club. I am also in the Bay Area (Marin) and a former Tesla owner. Bought my first Model S in 2014 and sold my last Tesla in 2022. In between i did own a Model X briefly. Bashing my head a few times on the sharp edges of the Frickin Wing Doors convinced me to sell it. Currently driving the Lucid 'econocar' - a 2025 Air Pure RWD and thoroughly enjoying it. As for Lucid service, i think it varies a bit depending on the service center and which person you are dealing with. I have had exemplary service from some folks, and others not so great. I think that is getting better over time. I do think the Gravity has alot of neat improvements over the Air, and should be a huge success as soon as the word gets out to the larger public. enjoy yours!

First of all, welcome to the forum! It’s balanced and informative posts like yours that keep me coming back here. You’re going to fit in well ☺️

Your experiences align with mine re: ownership of an X. If you could have seen me nodding in violent agreement when I read the “passenger confusion” portion of your post, you’d have laughed. You nailed it.

I’ll be trading in my 2022 Model X Plaid whenever my GDE is ready.
