New Owner in South Florida: Underwhelming Range Efficiency

Hi guys! I’ve had the car for about a month now, with no more than 1,000 on the odometer, and been hitting 2.85 mi/kWh. That is VERY underwhelming. Drive mostly on stop and go, short commutes, in South Florida. Is that normal?

No lead foot here, actually, trying to drive very conservatively, and even trying to use cruise control a lot.

Any comments or suggestions?

Do you have 19" wheels or 21"? And did you put the car in "Smooth" driving mode

I'm assuming since it's a Pure it does not have a glass roof. What are temperatures like? Sunny vs cloudy? Do you park outside in direct sun? What is your climate control set at? No matter the electric car, in my experience, cooling it is the biggest drain on the battery, even more so than in the cold of a midwestern winter. Do you park it outside at night?

2.85 is really not good for an Air Pure. If you're doing everything right, I might take it to the service center?

It's not so much the stop and go. It's short drives where ac or heat need to condition the cabin and the energy used is reflected in only a few miles driven.

with ICE cars too. On the freeway even with 20's I get 3.0 or better

try turning off regen, I get nearly 4 mi/kw without regen on.

Air or Gravity? Also, the manual states:

NOTE: Efficiency is suboptimal during the early life of the vehicle (approximately the first 2000 miles of driving).

The temps in Miami FL can be unforgiving this time of the year, around the 80-90’s. And I don’t park in covered driveways for the most part. Cabin temperature is set to 72degF in auto for the most part.

I wanted to ask the community before going to the Service Center, but yea, I think I may have to end up in a service center…

The 20s will bring down your efficiency a bit. Glad you're driving in smooth, haha. Like I said, you never know when the dealership messes up and doesn't tell someone something simple like that. With that heat, I can picture you being in the low to mid 3.xx mi/kwh but 2.85 does still feel low. Like borski said above, it might be something with the first 2000 miles (I didn't have this issue).

I've never lived in Miami but on my work trips to mid coastal Florida I leave my windows cracked a tiny bit to let heat escape and the temp is not as bad as a closed system with the windows fully shut. The work the car has to do to keep the electronics and battery from overheating is pretty significant in those temps and anything you can do to mitigate a few degrees here and there will help.

At the end of the day, 2.85 is still saving a ton of gas money even if it's not as efficient as you'd like. It would still piss me off, trust me, but at least it's a bit of a saving grace?

Keep in mind the since last charge includes all the auxiliary and stationary energy usage, so if you are just sitting there not moving it will be low until more miles are on.

My old ev was actually a ton more efficient in the city (seemingly) than the lucid. I’m not sure if it’s more liberal use of rwd only, blended baking working better with my driving style, or something else. But I was surprised at how bad my efficiency was around town too.

My AT with 20” rims gets around 3.4 mi/kwh on my commute in the summer with little to no ac on. My old ev6 got 4.2+ in the summer with no ac.

On the highway is a very different story. It stays about the same for the lucid and dropped down to 2.5-3 (75 vs 65 mph) for the ev6.

Edit: maybe it is because it’s so new but I don’t really understand the claim that the efficiency is worse when it’s new… why would that be?

Updating… so, I tried all the suggestions, from holy water to turning off regen. It turns out that turning OFF regen acrually helped me get closer to the 3.00, but not over it.

ALSO, I did took a 90 mile trip, all highway, and lo and behold, the number went SIGNIFICANTLY up to 3.86 mi/kWh…
