Luxury electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid Motors is priming 1,300 acres for future expansion of its Casa Grande manufacturing plant.

The company is requesting Casa Grande to annex the land into the city, as well as rezone the property to allow for manufacturing uses. The land is generally located along Thornton Road, south of Selma Highway and north of Interstate 8. The Casa Grande Planning and Zoning Commission recommended the council approve the rezoning request at its meeting in early February.

Lucid already leases the land, according to city documents. Most of the land is owned by Pinal County, and has a purchase agreement in place with Lucid, Casa Grande city staff said at the meeting. The expansion, known as Project Saguaro, would create a “decades-long expansion zone” that would allow for flexibility as Lucid expands.

Nick Wood, an attorney with Snell and Wilmer who is representing Lucid in the rezoning and annexation case, told the commission the move will help ready the land for more growth. Lucid does not have finalized plans in place for expansion, he said, but the changes will be proactive in preparing the land for when the company is ready to develop on it.

A spokesperson for Lucid said the company did not have any additional details yet to share about the case.

The Planning and Zoning Commission serves as an advisory body to the City Council. The council will vote on both the annexation and rezoning requests at a future meeting.

In January 2024, Lucid opened a major expansion of its Casa Grande facility, which brought the size of its factory up to 3.85 million square feet. The expansion was added to allow Lucid to begin building a luxury SUV, called the Gravity, at the Casa Grande facility. The Lucid Air Pure, a sedan, was already being manufactured there.
