Lucid Connected Home Charger NACS vs J1772

Hey all,

Excited to be part of the Lucid community. I'm getting my Lucid Air Touring next week and it comes with a charging accessories allowance. I'm looking to pick up a Lucid connected home charger and have a few thoughts/questions:

1. Has anyone installed one outside? How does it hold up to the elements, specifically snow? I'm based in Toronto.

2. My wife has a Tesla model Y which I'd like to be able to charge with the Lucid charger as well

3. Is there a Lucid brand NACS to J1772 adapter that would allow for 80amp charging?

Knowing that NACS is going to become the standard (including possibly on future Lucid Airs), I'd like to future-proof the install/charger I select. If you were buying a Lucid connected home charger right now and had an Air with J1772 and a Tesla, would you opt for the J1772 or NACS charger? Is it really cumbersome to constantly have to add/remove an adapter?

Is the Tesla Universal Wall Connector the smart choice here?

Would love your thoughts.

We have both as well, the Tesla should already have a NACS to J1772 adapter with it (either in the trunk or in the trunkwell), each of ours did. It plugs right into the middle of the CCS charger from Lucid, and charges faster than the Tesla mobile charger.
 
I have had the LCHCS charger since it first came out. It works perfectly with the Air and charges at 17-19 kW. When my some has visited with his Model 3 and now his Model Y Tesla it works fine with the Tesla provided adapter that came with his Teslas. So if you want to be able to charge your Air at much higher charge rate and still charge your Tesla at a similar rate to what you would see with the Tesla charger then I recommend you go with the LCHCS. Also, the LCHCS is supposed to be set up to be compatible with V2H once Lucid is able to sort out the regulatory issues and get it to us (hopefully this year).
 
Knowing this (and that you both make valid points) if you had the choice right now, would you opt for a Lucid Connected Home Charger with J1772 or with NACS?
 
It was clear - maybe I wasn’t. There is both a J1772 LCHCS and also a NACS LCHCS. Was askIng opinions on current convenience (J1772) vs future proofing (NACS). I think I’m leaning towards NACS as I could see myself getting a Gravity when my wife’s Tesla lease is up.
 
As a counterpoint, I would suggest instead two Tesla Universal Connectors.
Con: the only support up to a 60A (48A continuous) breaker. (But unless you really need 80A speed, I don't see that as a con. Many power companies base part of your bill on peak consumption, so charging at 18kw can increase your overall bill)

Pros: the can share the same 60A breaker daisy-chained, (or be on separate breakers) and split charging between your two cars. No more remembering to swap who's charging.

The magic dock style J1772 adapter is very nicely designed. When not needed you simply pull the NACS connector out and the J1772 stays in the body of the wall unit. When you need J1772, you just push the button on it and it is released from the wall unit already attached to the NACS connector.
And it connects to the car very easily. A Lectron adapter we previously used with my wife's Mustang Mach-E was very not sized appropriately and required a but of force to connect or disconnect from the car.

It can be. Most NACS-to-J1772 adapters want you to insert the NACS cable into the adapter, wait 30 seconds, then insert the adapter into the car. You'd have to deal with the adapter rather than your wife if you bought a NACS charger, probably a good idea.

Tesla's universal connector would be a good choice, though it's limited to 48 amps - usually this is enough.

Are you sure about the daisy chain? Unless something changed, the last time i read the manual, the gen 3 WC could not be on the same circuit, and only did power share via software. They were not hardwired to the same circuit.

Gen 2 WC was, and those went up to 80A. But when a friend considered the Gen 3 thinking it could be hardwired the same way, we found it could not.

The only thing getting in the way is this damn Lucid charging allowance ($950 Canadian) tempting me to buy the LCHCS 🫠 Also I plan to have the charger outside in my driveway (maybe free-standing on a pedestal) and the aesthetics of the Lucid charger just can’t be beat. Thanks for your help all.

Interesting, you're right! Not the same as circuit sharing on some other EVSEs.

Just get a NACS charger. J1772 is literally the middle part of the NACS plug. All Teslas come with a J1772 adapter, you just stick it in the middle of the NACS charger in the j1772 part and it makes it NACS.

I believe the group power management feature is achieved via WiFi connection between units and setting one unit as the primary and others as secondary. At least that was my understanding when I looked into a few months ago.

When mine were installed I distintly recall that daisy chain was an option. In any case, the power sharing is directed by the lead unit via WiFi.

I will see if I can dig up documentation

Interesting because then when you get to the setup section is once again doesn’t mention the single circuit branch setup at all.

The gen 2 had hardwired communication wires that had one WC be the master and determine the distribution of the load against the panel. I’d be leery of having that done over WiFi. But i am overly cautious like that.
 
My understanding is that the follower units will not provide power if they don't have connection to the leader.
 
The current installation manual section screenshot above clearly states one circuit breaker per wall connector. Does the manual contradict itself elsewhere?
 
It shows 3 options:
* Main panel, one EVSE per breaker.
* Subpanel fed by a breaker in main panel (normal subpanel) and one breaker per EVSE.
* The one I screenshot: one breaker with multiple EVSE.
 
Question: I currently own a Tesla Model 3, and have a 2nd Generation Tesla Wall connector set at 80 amps and connected to a 100 amp circuit. I heard this setup won't be able to charge a Lucid Gravity. So, if I replace the Tesla Wall connector with a Lucid Home Charger, will I be able to safely charge the Tesla Model 3? Are there any caveats to that?
