Loss of power steering while driving

That's one of the major causes of accidents. It's not a clear sign of there being anything wrong with you, and it happens to people of all ages. The only real defense is to try and slow down, and give your brain more time to process what your eyes are seeing.

The irony was that we were trying to see how much range we could get out of the car on a road trip, and I was driving in Smooth mode and slower than usual. After thinking I had a clear road, I pulled out to pass an agricultural tanker that was going about 40 mph. The police interviewed witnesses to the accident, and their report indicated no one thought I was speeding.

The phrase “slow down” does not go with a guy with an Air DE-P and two Gravity DEs! 😂

Man... some of the stories that are out there! Glad you're still with us. ;-)
Holy hell, those were some hair-raising episodes you had.
I hope you'll understand if I refuse any kind offer from you to drive me anywhere :_
This issue with the steering wheel is truly frightening, but it does appear to be unique with this particular Gravity.

Unfortunately, no car brand is immune from such hazardous issues. I had a Mercedes SL55 AMG that was the first Mercedes to use a brake-by-wire system. I was exiting a parking garage in Chicago. The car braked normally as I approached the exit arm at the pay booth, but when I then rolled down to the street-level exit, I had no brakes and rolled right into oncoming traffic on a downtown street. It was incredibly hairy, and I managed to stop the car only by steering it into a curb. Mercedes claimed the mechanical back-up system would still have responded to the brake pedal if I just put enough pressure on it. Believe me, I was standing on it for dear life.

It was never publicly announced, but Mercedes quietly took the system out of production in the next model year.

Less hair-raising was an incident with my Volvo 144 sedan some years earlier. I was entering an interstate exit ramp and went to downshift the manual transmission. The shift lever and its array of dangling linkages let go and came out of the console in my hand. I experienced something similar years later when the aforementioned Mercedes SL automatic shift lever failed.

Then there was my bedeviled 1998 Corvette that kept going into limp mode -- something that multiple shop visits had not resolved. The last time it happened I was cruising down the inside lane of I-95 in Connecticut, running alongside a concrete barrier wall. This was a 12-lane stretch of highway (6 each way) with heavy traffic averaging close to 80 mph. Suddenly my car was limited to 8 mph. There was no place to pull off to the left, and I had to get across 5 lanes to the right shoulder. I thought I was going to die. I got out of the car, walked down the nearest exit to a gas station, called a taxi, and never got back in the car. (It was a company car, and they took it off my hands.)

It sounds like the problem was poor performance in Smooth mode where you couldn’t teleport around traffic at your preferred speeds.

Curious if the Halo dashcam performed as advertised in the incident?

AND - now another case. My Gravity has been largely bug free. Hit over 15,000 miles in under a year. Got the warning while I was in Tahoe while driving but had no idea what the warning meant. Fortunately it was still driving and steering properly. DROVE ALL THE WAY TO SAN JOSE FROM TAHOE!! Got home and parked. Then dried to back out of driveway and there was no power steering. What a beast to turn the wheel!!!

And - now the call to the service center begins.

We had this happen in our ‘23 Model X, just a month into ownership. Unfortunately my wife was driving all the time as well. Somehow she pulled over into a gas station.

I had to fight Tesla a little to get it fixed. It got towed, but then it worked fine and it could not be reproduced. I showed them a forum discussion of occasional steering failures that only got resolved by steering column / motor replacement. They replaced it and it’s been fine since. It makes me very grateful to have good car forums like this one.

Hope you guys get yours replaced and it doesn’t happen again 🤞

This is a huge safety issue. All of these instances should be reported to the NHTSA

This has been a scary issue for me. Took ownership of a fully loaded Gravity in December and in March after parking at a friends house for couple of hours for dinner, the steering wheel froze. Had to be towed away but Lucid did not find anything and returned the car. After less than a month this time it was really scary. The steering froze while driving and the error message showed up on the screen. Luckily it froze only for few seconds while driving and recovered but after I parked the car it permanently froze and had to be towed again. This time it was 2 hrs from the service center. Ruined my entire Easter Sunday.

However, service found some issue with something which according to them was not installed properly at the manufacturing time. Now I am supposed to pick the car up again today but I am really scared to do so. Its such a serious safety issue for me and my family. I have asked Lucid to cancel my lease. I can't take the risk.

Anyone had this issue before?
Should report this to transport commission in case a recall is needed

I know op didn't have time to even think, but I am curious what would have happened if he immediately put it into DDPro2-Hands Free. If car took over wheel, I wonder if it'd reset.

UPDATE AND FULL RECAP: Saturday at 1:30 pm start up car in Tahoe to drive to San Jose. Within first 3 minutes of departure I get a warning (Big front an center CAUTION) to schedule service as the Steering assistance system malfunction. I detect no physical problems so we keep driving. 4 hours later we arrive in San Jose without stopping. I park the car in the driveway and unload. I then go to move the car and upon startup see the message again. Thinking nothing of it, I start to back out and realize there is no power to the steering wheel so it is nearly impossible to turn. I manage to get the car out the driveway and on to the street. I do a 10 second reset. Roughly 20 hours later (today / Sunday) I hop in the car to replicate the issue and to call 24/7 assistance. However, upon startup, the issue does not present itself. Drive around the block - no issues present. Park on the street and perform a full 30 second hard reset. I'll call Service when they open tomorrow to see what they say, and update the forum after that.

That’s kind of what happened for me too. When the tow truck arrived to pick up the car, ~2 hours after I gave up trying to turn the wheel, the power steering decided to work and all of the warnings had cleared. It’s at the service center now, in the triage queue to be looked at.
