LIDAR - Safest car on the road potential?

The $100K+ sensor cost figure for Waymo is way way way out of date. That's from the early days, when all of the sensors were low volume products, and one step away from engineering prototypes. Waymo doesn't disclose a lot of specifics about their driving platform, but they have said that the cost of their sensor suite has dropped dramatically from those early days. This shouldn't surprise anyone familiar with the cost curve of hardware products. LIDAR technology has improved dramatically in the last decade, and the volume of sensors manufactured has also dramatically increased. We're at the point where low end LIDAR is so cheap that there are a bunch of cell phones with LIDAR sensors included.
Lidar at least from iPhone 13pro, not sure about earlier. No idea about any android phones.

So it can be small and at least somewhat low power.

Close but what I was interested in knowing is if self driving is active (anyone’s system) and I grab the wheel and steer the car elsewhere does self driving stay engaged or not?

I’m driving and I need to take over right now. What does the system do, how does it behave? And now I’m out of just the fsd response but any self driving car\

You can use FSD without a destination. You can change the destination while using FSD. This is actually a big safety improvement of FSD and robotaxi. You can change the destination without risk of the car making a mistake inbetween it routing to a new destination. They seemed to have solved this issue.

you can steer the car but it disengages FSD and then you can instantly reengage FSD anywhere. This is the new feature of v14. FSD can be engaged within a split second anywhere. Even in the middle of an intersection during a turn

I have seen lot of Cybercabs on the road - all with someone in the driver's seat. Whatever they turn out to be, it's not here yet.

Tesla has 1000 vehicles in texas all operating unsupervised and in florida there is about 100

These are I think more than 50% cybercabs now

Tesla will expand into two easy metros (vegas and phoenix) as well as 2 easy cities in texas. Highway driving will also come this year. I expect tesla has 2500 by the end of the year

From tesla job listings, teslas next metros are charlotte, atlanta, nashville, and the are also getting ready to test in california it looks like.

Model Y and Cybercab REGISTERED vehicles. Plenty just sitting in Dallas waiting for deployment.

The ones sitting are driver-in cybercabs and/or test vehicles. Tesla only registers driverless vehicles

Tesla has probably built 4000 cyberabs at this point (not driverless), and maybe there are 2000 model Ys that are test vehicles.

But FSD currently works better than any other commercially available ADAS system on the market (outside of Waymo with it’s $100K+ sensor suite). Right now, if you want a car capable of point-to-point ADAS here in the US, there is only one choice -Tesla, so to say that it is not working is not accurate. Yes, I really hope that Lucid/NVIDIA are able to leverage their Lidar to create a system better than FSD but only time will tell. Based on Lucid promises of AR HUD and actual delivery, I am a little hesitant to take Lucid at their word when promising future tech. Most of the cars in China that everyone are talking about have multiple Lidar around the car. Lucid, Rivian, Volvo, Mercedes are planning to use just one small forward facing Lidar.
Define working? In my book, if it makes serious mistakes it’s doesn’t work. And it’s not just being safer than an average human, it needs to be exponentially safer, and you can’t achieve that without sensor redundancy.

Don’t believe everything that comes out of Musk’s mouth….he has his motives, and a lot of times it’s not in the public’s best interest.

He ditched Lidar and Radar because it would have been much harder and taken longer to achieve level 4- plain and simple. He cuts corners….

His “ level 4” should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Who knows! You definitely don’t. Please stop speculating. The constant cult boy drivel is getting irritating….

Bold is definitely true. That plus cost savings. I guess that is what you mean by "cuts corners". Thing is, the automakers that are sticking with radar and lidar are finding out the same thing Musk found out. That $#!t is HARD!! But kudos to them for continuing to work on the development and integration.

There's literally no speculation here. Tesla registers vehicles by vin number. You can literally see tesla has 1204 vehicles registered in texas for driverless service.

none of these vin numbers match a test vehicle. The only vehicles registered are those with robotaxi decals on them (driverless).

if you look at that lot in Dallas that the person was referring to, it's full of hundreds of cybercabs but they are not driverless ones.

As far as cybercabs you can simply guess how many they have built from vin numbers.

If it weren’t hard we’d have hired 10 year olds

Here, go through this video, good example of how Musk is just full of hot air……he goes blah blah blah and Tesla cult lap it up like puppies…..he knows NITHING about engineering or physics, just a blowhorn.

This doesn't have anything to do with self driving and the fact that musk has nothing to do with registering cars in texas

That guy's logic also does not make sense. A starlink v3 satellite is already around 100kW and that's about what Spacex had planned for each satellite

A @gaskiller and @mobada debate - Let's hope this will be decided by Tuesday as well! We just need @watermelonrooste to chime in now!

Not meant as personal attacks - just very passionate people making their case - sound familiar? Opinion stated as fact, facts discarded as opinions.

Damn, I LOVE the American spirit!!!
