Is Lucid styling the problem?

I agree it's not an exciting look. But let's remember that first and foremost it's a LUXURY car, not an off-road SUV. They may refer to it as an SUV for marketing purposes because SUVs are the most desirable class in the US, but it's a long way from being a true SUV (like an Escalade or Expedition). It's really a wagon in my book, if I had to pick one category to describe it. It's not tall enough to be a true SUV.

Given that it's really a wagon design, and it's a luxury car, I think the styling fits. I wouldn't try to make it sporty looking. It's already trying to be so many different things (SUV... wagon... minivan...) that trying to add sporty to the list would just confuse it more. The "sporty" comes in the most practical part: the rocket ship power.

As much as I would like more SUV-like height and better (way better) visibility out the back, I know that would seriously reduce the range. The super range is one of the biggest selling points, and the #1 reason I chose it. Without that I'd have picked something that's a real SUV.
Then again, Nissan made a NISMO version of the Armada and cadillac has had success with the Escalade V...BMW sells droves of X5//M and the like, most g-class are AMG g55/63.. People are willing to pay..

Those are ICE or hybrid though. Range isn't an issue in ICE/hybrid, because refueling is fast and ubiquitous. Much harder to produce range in a BEV (especially with any efficiency), thus the wagon-like shape of the Gravity rather than a true SUV shape.

I'd love it if the Gravity were 6" taller with a taller/boxier rear window for better visibility, but I know that would seriously cut the range. The Escalade IQ gets there with brute battery size, but it's just too big for my needs. And too expensive.

Teslas can fart 💨 with the app.

GM BEVs are horrifically inefficient. But, you can get a rough comparison against the BMW iX. That one is a little taller than the Gravity and more SUV-ish with a huge, squared-off hood. Car and Driver got 260 miles at 75 MPH on the Gravity Touring with its 89 kWh battery, for 2.9 miles/kWh efficiency. They got 290 miles at 75 MPH on an iX xDrive50 with a 105 kWh battery for 2.8 miles/kWh. The Gravity was 5.8% more efficient than the taller, heavier, and slightly boxier iX.

I get about 2.6 in my i7 brick edition

The core philosophy is all about playing the ultimate wildcard - "staying underestimated, unobtrusive, and inconspicuous so that no one sees you coming" :)

This is Audi's philosophy too. They've been bleeding sales to BMW for years now even though "everyone" hates the styling of every new BMW model.

The Gravity Touring also seats 7 and will smoke the iX at all Performance related things like acceleration, handling and charging. And the Touring is the same price. But to some extent the boxy shape may not be that detrimental to range vs weight and motor design. But they are actually within inches of each other in dimensions.

Without people test driving it the first comment I get is that the Gravity looks like a Mini Van and a lot of prospective customers do not want their SUV looking like a mini Van . That front end sucks so people won’t even get into one to experience the rest.

Nope. I have a Touring and I came from an iX xDrive50 (523 hp). The iX was quite a bit faster and more aggressive.

The Gravity handles better though.

They are both fast enough that I don't really care. I actually prefer the way the Gravity delivers power. Much smoother.

The Car and Drive test numbers don't bear that out, I am sure in day-to-day the way it's calibrated it's faster off the line, just like how Rivian tunes their motors to be fast off the line.

There’s nothing like the Gravity out there. It’s insane that it even exists especially from a new company. It pulls numbers that put AMG to shame.

I think it looks good too. It doesn’t look like a minivan idk why people keep saying that!

Yeah I haven't gotten that impression from anyone in person who sees it in person. They think it looks like a spaceship, very sleek. It doesn't have a rugged look but neither do any of the Germans outside of a G-Wagon. But I still would say the Air 9 out 10 people love it and says its beautiful, and one says its ugly or looks like a 'buick'. Can't find which Buick that is. Regularly get it confused by Hyundai Sonata's at low light from far away in the front. I'd say Gravity is more like 7 out of 10 really like it, 2 are indifferent (mostly because SUVs are everywhere and boring), and 1 actively dislikes it.

My wife says my Abyss Black Stealth has a "hearse" vibe... can't really argue that one!

The Gravity Touring is quicker (0-60 and quarter mile) than the iX xDrive50. However, the iX bests the Gravity in braking and skid pad. C&D does not publish slalom performance online anymore, but the iX xDrive50 would likely beat the Gravity Touring in an autocross course because of its handling advantages. The Gravity would have an advantage on a course with mild corners and long straights. But no worries, the iX is discontinued in the US, so it is no threat.

I think this is still on topic, but MotorWeek just renewed their take on the 2026 Air, and definitely don't have a problem with the styling.

"The Gravity SUV will probably be a much bigger indicator of Lucid’s long term potential, but we’re not betting against Lucid. Dreams do come true, and the 2026 Lucid Air has become a jewel of a car, seemingly taking a Model S, engineering all the weirdness out of it, and creating one of the finest cars we’ve ever driven, electric or otherwise."

It depends on what you're measuring. A total run 0-60, maybe it's a tad bit faster, or a wash. But the Gravity delivers that more linearly, while the iX jumps like a beast.

Nothing about being better or worse. It's just the way they're calibrated.

Also, the Gravity only does those advertised numbers in Sprint mode with launch control. In "normal driving", it's quite a bit smoother. The iX is always a beast, which it's actually annoying a bit, because it's jerky.

Of course it is. What could be more zen that a 2” blank square that would otherwise contain tire pressures.

Imagine the person that had to program that 🤣
I personally love the old Saab mode where almost all of the lights and gauges go black at night. Zen isn't quite the same, but it's a similar idea.

I used to love this! Always thought it was so cool! “Fighter jet” inspired.
