Initiating an update from the pilot panel is easy, but can you do it from the mobile app, and if so, how? I do not have the mobile key activated due to reported conflicts with the fobs and entry.

Yes. In the app, you will get a notification ( if enabled) and it will show up as a small dot next to the shield icon in the lower right. That will take you to the screen where it shows your VIN and tire pressure. It'll say "software update available" then you just click that and install it.
