Help is on the way - the state of new charging stations

Federal PR spin to counter recent opposition talking points.

I an an EVangelical. I support moving transportation to electric power. Electric delivery vehicles make the most sense of all applications.

anyone feeling de joy over this ?

The neighborhood, this time of year especially, is full of delivery trucks. Some day I hope ALL OF THEM are electric.

I can't wait to see an EV mail truck in my neighborhood. Our current mail truck is a smoky, clattery mess. IMO mail delivery is one of the best use cases for an EV and long overdue.

My previous comment was in reference to recent false media commentary that $5 billion of federal money had been spent on eight charging locations.

I am a little concerned that the whole NEVI EV charging station program implementation/installation management might have been better off done at the federal level, instead of mandating that each state becomes proficient at it. Though on second thought, it is probably better for the long term that each state gains the experience, however inefficient.

Yeah, my thinking is if it was handled federally everything would be sling an interstate (maybe good) and we wouldn’t see it for decades. Plus it would run the risk of political changeover.

With handing it to the states, it’s harder to pull it back, and the states are responsible for making it not suck. Eventually, enough states will succeed; and they will change the landscape for those that didn’t.

I hate to say it, but I'm expecting the whole shebang to get the old 'Command-Z' come January.
Can’t. Money has been distributed. It’s in the states’ hands. That was the whole point, and the reason it isn’t in the Feds’ hands. Buttigieg, it turns out, isn’t an idiot. :)

Related, but potentially more of a game-changer, is this other announcement last week:

https://www.theverge.com/2024/12/4/24312002/ev-plug-and-charge-universal-protocol-sae-pki-roaming

The idea is a shared protocol allowing drivers to skip the individual charger-company apps -- to recognize all our cars everywhere (or most-where), so we can charge and go, supposedly in 2025. It sounds like the roll-out will be tied to each automaker making some necessary connections with each charger-company -- but this should be simpler/quicker than the Tesla-adapter queue.... It notes that, as we know, Lucid already is in sync with the EA network (is this true beyond the initial free period now?); hopefully some of the key other charging companies will follow soon after this program is activated.

Correct. Lucid is ahead of the curve by supporting ISO 15118 (some others do too, but not all makes or models). They’re building out billing for it now but otherwise are good to go; this update is for authorization, which I’m excited for, over just handing certs around which is what happens now.
