I have 2 Mercedes. You get 3 years free connected services and then there is a yearly charge to continue these services after that. You must not have hit the 3 year limit yet. Believe me, Mercedes will get their pound of flesh eventually.

Absolutely but it's also pretty normal for companies to be upfront about what features will require their connectivity plans.

Like I said it's not a dealbreaker for me, just annoying that they're not upfront about what's going to be required, how much it'll cost, etc. Much like how I think it's misleading that Apple CarPlay and phone as a key are listed as features but it doesn't say they're not available yet (but Android Auto does say coming soon!).

I'm sure Lucid wants to be taken seriously as a car company but boneheaded things like bad marketing, missing features, broken features that should be caught in QA/QC (like the keyfobs) really undermine that to me.

Even for Air it was always billed as a connectivity feature, that one day people would need to pay for. (Connected maps, cellular) I think that some of the slow rollout cause them to waive this fee/not collect it.

If Lucid tried this, I’d sell my car. I am fine with paying for opex costs (though I wish they’d just let me pick my own eSIM) but I refuse to pay for “unlockable HP” or similar nonsense.

It wouldn’t align with my values, and so I’d sell the car without question.

So I very much hope not.
 
Car manufacturers and their subscriptions are precarious. By default, I hate subscriptions, downloadable contents or whatever they call it. Halo type of service however I understand. Remote Video transfer is very bandwidth intensive and storage/redundancy is expensive. So I get that. They just need to make it worthwhile and very bug free to justify the price. If they start doing things like more themes at a price or better mileage at a price through subscription instead of car price then I'm going to have a problem with it.

I understand Halo is currently in beta, like much of the Gravity software.
What does Halo record at this point? Crashes? Contact with another vehicle?
Does it capture when a human makes contact with the vehicle (i.e. vandalism)?

Crashes, honking of the horn starts a recording and manually. It doesn’t do anything if someone is near the car (no Tesla sentry mode-like yet). Notably, LiveView, which is separate but related, does not work and is not available when car is being charged.

Car is constantly recording, so when it starts recording you get the prior 30 seconds.

Hopefully, it will be more like Sentry mode one day.

Sentry may be a little too sensitive. As noted above, it captures videos of anyone walking near the vehicle.
When I leave the Gravity at an airport for a week, I don't need to see the passersby, but I do want to capture anyone making contact.

It will not record someone making contact like banging their door on your car, etc. If you tried to pick up the car with a crane, it might trigger the alarm, but not Halo.

Agree, Sentry is too sensitive. A little voyeur-like if you ask me…

I think someone really jostling the car would do it though. Halo Secure inadvertently turned on one time in our vehicle as a result of Anti-Theft Protection being triggered when our four year old decided it would be fun to jump up and down inside the car between the first and second rows while we were parked and waiting for someone before going into a restaurant. I also have it set to capture the video anytime I honk the horn, hard break, or engage Launch Mode (which are the only options right now), and it is also supposed to record accidents.

We had a very sharp braking incident due to sudden standing water and halo automatically recorded it. The car handled it beautifully, btw.

I can imagine existing vehicles might be grandfathered, however I CANNOT imagine Lucid not monetizing some features through a subscription model.

Apple has turned the practice into a healthy portion of their revenue stream, as have other car manufacturers.

But, you don't have to subscribe if you don't want to... buyer's choice!

Just to be clear, the only feature we've seen that Lucid plans to charge a subscription for (Live view) is not a feature that MB provides at any cost. MB allows viewing the footage in the car and using a USB drive - both of which are included in Halo and no indication at this point that it will move to a subscription service later.
