Gravity winter tire options?

I'm hearing conflicting things in this thread...can I go with 20/21's...or it has to be the lucid 20/21's or it will bite me? Thanks.
Lucid 20/21 or square 22 work well

and obviously 20/21's have taller sidewalls for snow than a 22

Nokian has a studded option (scroll down):

Anyone have suggestions on how to run a studded snow set-up. I'm up here in Stowe, Vermont...lots of ice in the winter. I have a Dream Edition with 22/23's and I'm assuming I need to go to 20/21's...unless anyone's had success running a 4 square set-up? So it's both wheels and tires I get to figure out, without voiding a warranty or create havoc with the car's set-up. Thoughts?
Don't they plow the main streets in Stowe? What makes you think a good set of studless winter tires are insufficient?

I'd think Lucid's winter wheel/tire set is probably your best bet.

I just did a search for Nokian retailers, since I have Nokian winters on my current X and love them.

You can get the Nokian Hakkapelitta R5 SUVs at Priority Tire, it appears:
R20: https://www.prioritytire.com/by-brand/nokian-tires/hakkapeliitta-r5-suv?var-nokian-tyres=38076
R21: https://www.prioritytire.com/by-brand/nokian-tires/hakkapeliitta-r5-suv?var-nokian-tyres=125014

The R21's aren't cheap, though... $579 vs $376. Not sure why they're so much more.. maybe just an uncommon size.
Thanks. Been in touch with Tirerack and Discount Tire, both saying they can't figure out how to go studded. Still hoping for studs. Heck they're scared to even try putting 21's in the rear (as someone in this forum couldn't get them to clear as well). Even Natick doesn't know what to do.

Get a set of 22” wheels and put Michelin X-Ice snow SUV on them, there are no ice rated tires in 22” size so you are stuck buying the Lucid small wheel.

I got a set of forged replica large tire in 22” 9.5 and 11” wide about to come out to be swapped for an even bigger size winter setup, I can always go bigger for summer and let you have the wheels for double the price, I can be reasonable.

A little confused by this one....are you meanign there are no ice rated tires in 21" size...I'm not sure what this means: there are no ice rated tires in 22” size so you are stuck buying the Lucid small wheel. I've gotta say, I am still so confused by this one. I thank everyone for trying.

Ok…I will try again.

Lucid rear 21” wheel has a step barrel with extra height for the parking brake. Other 21” rear wheels will not clear the barrel.

Go with Lucid 20/21” or go with 22”.

Unless 50+% of your driving is on true ice, I just want to re-emphasize that a good set of studless tires is likely better for your use case. Studless winter tires will perform better in snow, slush, and dry conditions, and they also have respectable ice performance, unlike studdless winter tires of the past. I haven't skied Stowe, but I've spent a lot of time skiing Killington, Sugarbush, and Stratton, staying at places 1+ hours away from the mountain with far less frequent plowing, and I can unequivocally say in all those instances studless tires were better suited than studded.

Thanks to both of you. And yes, finding studs is not flowing, so it may be that studless is best....it's a steep uphill to the mountain here...and lots of stories of all of the SUV's on ice sliding off the roads here. If I go 20/21's, can you buy the lucid wheels separately, or only with their winter driving kit (which isn't an ice-rated tire, but a "performance" winter tire. Thanks again.

And can I really run 22 square??? That would mean only purchasing 2 obscenely priced wheels in theory.

No, only I can run 22”’square.

First I ran 22” with all seasons, sold this to another member and went 22” summer. Should have my winter setup in the next two weeks.

Otherwise…no one else can do it. And that one person in Ohio…but that’s it!

Thanks all, and @037 thanks for the patience. I’ve done the math, and everything new comes in over my budget, so I’m trying to get a real ice setup on my Dream Edition (22/23s) for under about $3,700. Stowe, VT, steep icy hill. A few specific questions:

  1. Factory 22s on all four corners: Has anyone run my Aether 22x9.5 fronts plus two factory 22s on the rear, either the Orion 22x10 rears or a second pair of Aether fronts? Any clearance problems?
  2. Car settings: Will the car let you select 265/40R22 front and 285/40R22 rear together, and does everything behave (TPMS, traction control, range estimate)?
  3. Used wheels: Does anyone have a pair of take-off factory 22s, with or without sensors, they’d sell? Especially anyone who went custom from 21/22s.
  4. Other-brand wheels: Has anyone confirmed 22s from another vehicle fit, like the Model X or Range Rover wheels mentioned in the winter package thread? What bore, offset and load rating do I need to match?
  5. Sensors: Do aftermarket TPMS sensors work on the Gravity, or does it have to be Lucid’s?
  6. Studs: Is anyone actually running studded tires on a Gravity? Which tire and size, and on what wheels?
  7. Wheels-only price: What has Lucid service charged this season for the 20/21 Voyager wheels alone?

1. All factory 22” wheels will fit the rear, so the 22” medium obviously and 22” large front.

2. Car has no idea what wheels are used, will show you rated range based on stock. As long as diameter is stock, you are fine

3. I have a set of Lucid large wheels, was about to re-purpose a front as a winter spare unless you buy them first

4. Model X wheels will not have the load rating you want, Land Rover wheels have a forged option that may fit with a 5mm front spacer, I tried to go that route and it was painful. Have to be careful with weight.

5. I don’t know anyone with aftermarket sensors, I paid for a second Gravity oem set and will be using them in two weeks

6. Have not seen or heard anyone using studs

7. Ask Lucid?

Thank you 037. How much are you looking for your mediums, and where are you in the world?

I don’t have mediums, only the large front and rear. I am in NYC.

Technically…I do have a replica forged large wheel in a square 22” size with 275/315 summer tire.

They make quite a splash in the rain
:)
