Gravity Radar Installation

On our August road trip to Atlanta we were hit by a DragonEye laser on I-75 in Georgia, and we sailed through. (The Uniden apparently can identify the brand of laser that is hitting you.)
ALP can id the gun as well. Are you setting up the Uniden on the second vehicle as well? Curious about the total install and product cost.

Stinger can ID the gun too. The issue isn't that, but either:
a) interference between the lidar and Stinger
b) they're mounted not level

either way, i'll work with them to get it fixed

Don’t remember seeing Stinger at the top of the jamming charts to include it into the buying decision.

Yes, the car is going in tomorrow for the Uniden installation. Total cost for first system was $7920.

Thanks for sharing! Sounds like you spent like 20k between that and the PPF

The PPF for the black Gravity was $9500. Still haven't seen the final bill for the first (green) Gravity, as the templates for the roof cantrails and some trim pieces weren't yet out when that car was wrapped, and since some of those pieces have rubber gaskets close to them the installer wanted to wait to wrap them. Also, we've got to have a rear passenger door wrapped again. A semi-truck kicked a piece of wood into the side of the car on I-75. It was enough to tear the film, but the film saved the paint so that a dent remover can probably repair the door.

The green Gravity is going back in for this work the week after next upon return of the black Gravity from the radar installation.

Between all this and the green Gravity having been in Service Centers for almost six weeks cumulatively so far, we really haven't gotten to drive the cars much.

All the investment should pay off once all the bugs are fixed and then you can actually enjoy the vehicle.

They should have a monument for the extreme level of patience you exhibited.

Thanks for sharing your journey!

It's early to tell, but so far none of the hardware problems we had with the first Gravity by this point have surfaced with the new Gravity. It's having all the software glitches other owners are reporting, but that's it thus far.

Optimism is creeping back into the picture.

Guarded optimism with the depth of your experience…

I got quoted $8500 for Uniden R9W in NYC, woof…

Will let them look at the vehicle tomorrow and see if the price goes up more.
They're about $5000 just in parts cost, and labor intensive to install. We have a Rivian R1T and R1S fitted with R9w's and the cost was >$10k per vehicle in WA due to labor involved. Installer did an absolutely amazing job, lots of custom fabrication, but it was a pretty penny. We just ordered a GGT and need to size that up for Radar and ALP.

That's exactly what we paid for the second installation of an R9W in our Gravities in Naples, FL. However, it was less than the ~$10,000 we paid to have a Radenso setup installed in our Air several years ago. (The Air installation was more involved, requiring the removal of the front bumper, which the Gravity does not.)

The walk away price was closer to 11k, it was their first Gravity install. I also had USB C power ran front and back for dash cams so I don’t need to be stuck running a front to back two channel camera cable.

While we were at it hard wired a Dragy to the roof.

Dash cams? Have you tried Halo Secure yet? It's been hit and miss in our first Gravity, but so far it's been working flawlessly in the one we received a couple of weeks ago. Good images and includes front, back, and side views.

I haven't tried it yet in our first car, but I wonder if it's now moved beyond the beta stage at which Lucid first released it.

Halo is on demand and right now the quality is barely 1MP, it has unique views but I can’t use it as a primary, can’t read a plate.

Ours has been working nearly every time now, so I suspect it's just improving, and your first car is probably okay now. Ours also was hit-and-miss until the most recent update.

For those with windshield mounted detectors, is there any way to mount it at the cutout section without blocking the visor?

Will placing the detector just to the left of the visor be ok? It won’t have a direct line of sight through the cutout, but it would be about 2 inches left of the left most part of the cutout.

My only other option would be mounting it behind the visor, but then it’d be about 1 foot behind the cutout.

Thoughts?

My Valentine 1 works with suction cups. Passenger visor won't go fully forward, flush with windshield, but it goes far enough for normal use.

I have mine positioned directly in the cutout - haven't had a complaint or, more importantly, a ticket with that setup. It is powered directly from car under roof fascia, by a professional.

If you really need a radar detector, I wouldn't risk not using the cutout - YMMV.

Any chance you can send a picture of your mount placement?

Anyone have experience with California regs for mounting Radar Detectors? My understanding is you get ticketed for attaching it to the windshield. And there are two designated spots where they are allowed: lower corners of windshield, on the dash.

Those placements are NG for the windshield coatings...

Is it possible to use the mirror housing as a mount point to place the unit in the cutout? Velcro? Or clip to passenger visor?

My GGT is a lease so I'm not interested in the investment required for systems like the Uniden R9w. I'm looking at the R8w. Got a ticket on the 101 in Humboldt last week from a CHP pickup truck that came around a curve traveling in the opposite direction, and I do not want to repeat that.
