Gravity HUD question

Picking it up today after getting it wrapped, ceramic and tinted but here’s on day of pickup. If you want more, send me a private ping.

As @borski mentioned Lucid has/had plans for an amazing AR HUD. It’s unclear if/when they’ll deliver those features. There’s been so many other bugs to squash or higher priority features to intro (CarPlay/AA), that it seems HUD took a backseat (pun intended).

Hopefully, they’ll improve it over time.

As others have said, the position of the clear view cockpit is excellent (IMO), so I opted for no HUD and don’t miss it (right now). I notice how great the cockpit position is on Gravity every time I have to drive our R1S and look down and “through” the steering wheel to see the screen.
Sounds like the DDPro saga on the Air all over again! Ambitious goals, exaggerated claims, charges extra for it, but languished for years to come close to the promises!

DDPro does exactly what it says on the tin. It was never promised to do point to point, and it does highway hands-free just fine.

It’s not FSD, but they never said it was going to be.

I never thought DDPro is FSD. It took a long time to rollout and its functionality trails competition.

Based on the issues described by the owners, it seems to me the HUD has both hardware and software problems. It will likely take a lot of time and effort to get it to where it is supposed to be.

I have the HUD in my gravity and I’m glad I have it. I drove a loaner gravity without the HUD and it was a noticeable difference.

While it’s true that the cockpit display is positioned nicely, looking at the display requires a change in eyesight focal distance. While checking speed required only a quick glance, I found myself looking at the cock display for seconds at a time, while setting cruise control speed, looking at the navigation next turn indicator/countdown, and monitoring the dream drive indicator. Because of the focal distance change, I couldn’t really see what was happening on the road.

With the HUD, looking at those indicators requires very little eyesight adjustment and what’s happening with the traffic in front of you is always clearly visible. I didn’t realize how much I missed the HUD until I didn’t have it.

I do wish that HUD was better and there were less reflections, and I’m very much hoping that AR features will be added sometime down the road. However, even with those imperfections, it’s a net positive in my book.

I will say that if I had to give up an option, the HUD would be the first to go.

Been putting some highway miles on the Gravity, which is something I don't really do much.

Came home from Northern Michigan, 2.5 hour trip. Hands free is pretty darn good! 🧦

After getting home, I jumped in to my wife's Polestar 3 to run to the car wash. I noticed her HUD display appears as if it is at the leading edge of the car. When I got back in to the Gravity, I noticed the HUD display is projected to appear about 10-12 feet in front of the car. Clearly projected in space way in front of the vehicle as opposed to the P3 being basically projected to be a windshield display.

As these are the only HUD-equipped cars I have ever owned, I'd love some feedback and experiences about where the display is projected in competing makes.

I have a totally new respect for what Lucid is trying to do as compared to Polestar - please help me learn what other companies are doing.

Thanks in advance! Dream (and look) Ahead!

The reason Lucid’s is projected so far forward is because the plans include using augmented reality to show lanes on the road, as arrows on the ground in front of you, to point out which exits to take, etc.

That doesn’t exist yet, but that’s the reason it’s projected so far forward.

What he said... Typical HUD is projected 5' to 10' in front of the windshield. While AR HUD systems project 50' or more ahead of the car.

Our two cars (non-Lucid) with standard HUD project around the end of the hood.

Looks like Mercedes offers something like it in at least S-Class.

In any event, even without the AR portion, I have grown to like the projection to be further out ahead of the vehicle. Glad I have HUD.

Yes, GM, Mercedes, Porsche, and Audi all offer AR HUD. (GM's AR HUD supplier just went Tango Uniform, so they deleted the option from all future builds.)

I never really thought about it before, but the forward projection is the stand-out differentiator for the Gravity HUD. It makes quite a bit of difference compared to looking at the cockpit display and being able to keep the road in sight. I guess that’s why I like it, especially having the navigation turn countdown right where you are already looking. It’s why I’m willing to put up with all the negatives - you get used to the negatives.

The only other HUD I've ever used is in our 2025 Porsche Macan EV. It's dead solid perfect. Love it. And it's the main reason I opted to get the HUD in the Gravity. It's perfectly aligned, bright, clear, and I had no problem seeing it with my polarized prescription sunglasses.

At first the Gravity HUD was a big disappointment and I was sorry I got it. Couldn't see it at all with polarized glasses and had to order new non-polarized ones (Compromise #1). But I still couldn't see more than a very faint HUD sitting where I prefer (high for best visibility). Had to lower the seat and sit more in the middle (Compromise #2). Now I've got it dialed in to where I can see it and I like it. It's still a little tilted, which is sloppy, but it's visible and clear and bright enough to be usable. It still sits a couple of notches higher on the road than would be ideal. When I crest a hill or short rise where the road dips below the horizon, the HUD gets right in the way of the view. But that's rare and only lasts a few second until the road levels out.

While it's still a bit sloppy (embarrassingly so on a car of this price point), I'm glad I have it now and it's quite useful, even with the regular driver display well-positioned above the steering wheel which is much better than most cars. Glare is an issue though. There's the full-time reflection of the box (which your brain tends to tune out as you get used to it), plus the rare blinding sun reflection off the curved plastic cover when the sun is at the exact wrong point. That's bad, but rare.

Now that I've got it dialed in, I'm almost afraid of any fixes they may try to apply with software updates. It definitely needs improvement to get it truly right (like our Porsche is) but I'm afraid any change could screw up what works now. It's literally right on the edge now to get it to be clear and visible and a little tweak the wrong way could push it over the edge.
