Gravity Cold weather driving range experience (small sample)

Had it as low as 1.96 and no issues in snow on standard regen, it helps to pay attention to stopping and going.
Had too many issues in our X and R1S (with winter tires) to try.

I should’ve mentioned have a ski rack with skis and snowboards clearly didn’t help efficiency!

I am on custom 22s with a very inefficient Michelin All Season 4 tire. And I never use cruise control but mostly in snooze mode.

I think the Car's weight + stability and fancy traction control is doing a lot. No wheelspin or slip, but there is a little feeling of squidgy Ness on the Hankooks. They are the OEM A/S. It's pretty surefooted with any kind of smooth input driving that you master when living in the Midwest...

Certainly not as good as my CR-V (which I can turn off Traction control and stability and feel everything) which is on Falken WildPeak A/T Trail (a sort of road biased all-terrain, the tread blocks still get stiff at 25 degrees F).
Yes, I have those Falken Wild Peaks on my Outback and they handle snow almost as good as the Cooper Discoverer's I used to have

"squidgyness"...Love the description! Sounds like the Hankooks need to come off and get switched for something 3PMSF rated to handle ski season challenges

I'm a victim of An extreme scenario. Late last week i charged my battery to 80%. I'm a first responder and I'm retired so, All of my driving is very local. Over the course of less than a week, my battery percentage dropped to 11% after JUST UNDER 50 MILES DRIVEN (see picts). Yes, we're in the midst of a real cold/wintery mix here in NJ BUT, 50 MILES on SOC starting at 80% and expending to 11%. WTF!!! I've really questioned the range on my new GGT in my 4 weeks of ownership BUT, this incident now gives me great pause!!! This is not my first rodeo as it relates to ev ownership. I've studied and practiced good charging habits, limits, etc. As I see it, NO SCENARIO exists that would produce such extraordinarily poor performance! Any similar issues from this great pool of lucid owners?

What I can see is battery loss due to cold compounded by heavy heat use and battery pre-conditioning. If it was plugged in to home to maintain battery safe operating temps I thing the impact would have been greatly reduced.

Not saying the drop is normal but I can see factors that did impact.

For me personally my efficiency is around 2.0 and I am in a heated garage with no battery loss due to cold. It’s just the way I drive with the heat always on in every row.

I would send these pictures to Customer Care/Service. Something does not seem right. I would expect 2% per day loss, maybe slightly more since it is very cold where you are but not what you are seeing in a week.

Something is definitely going on here. Maybe someone is accidentally turning on the heating/preconditioning? I’ve never seen drops like that without driving in any EV, no matter the cold. I would definitely get your car checked out. I’ve lost about a percent in two days with my Gravity sitting out in teens and single digits this winter.

It was -10 here when I woke up this morning. Got 1.89 to 1.98 mi/kWh. Cabin temp had been 2 F before preconditioning and climate turned on. Luckily a rare occurrence.

@TMartz I assume you were in single digit sub-freezing temperatures without charging for a week. I suspect a substantial portion of your charge went into keeping your battery warm and healthy, which is a good thing.

In your graph, there are 4 large drops in charge and many smaller ones. Those drops probably indicate you were parked but consuming charge for battery warmth/health. Perfectly normal (and desired) given the extreme winter conditions.

You consumed 23.6% charge for “since charge + driving”. Your total usage was 78.5%, so while parked, you used 54.9% (78.5 - 23.6). That probably went into battery preconditioning.

That 54.9% usage while parked over a week during sub-freezing temperatures seems reasonable to me. Attached is a screenshot I took when my car was parked for a few hours with temps around 47F, where 0.8% of the battery was used for pre-conditioning.

What does your “since charge + parked” stats show?

The ironic thing is that I don't use climate excessively AT ALL. When on I have set for no higher than 67deg and often turn it off when all else is warming (seat, steering). I do precondition because I'm told that it is a must for battery maintenance but, like my climate use, it is by no means excessive! I'll spare the details of my problem list because it would fill an exorbitant amount af space here but, suffice it to say I have 3 pages worth of worrisome issues that have left me seriously regretting my GGT PURCHASE!

... And no, not single digit temps here by any stretch! The lowest we've had is 13deg for short spells but mostly hovering low/mid 20s. This car is driven daily, all short trips (1-5 miles) so this does not sit parked and unused.

AND, after charging last night and prepping for my travels this am, I attempted to precondition while still plugged in But the app does not present the precondion option when plugged in! Just DISAPPEARS - CAN'T DO IT!!

The takeaway here is that there is nothing wrong with the Gravity. There are 4 big drops in charge, which I’m guessing is overnight. Five days without being plugged in during an unusually cold weather event would cause any EV to have the same symptoms. Using 2/3 of used charge for battery health and 1/3 for actual driving is what caused the apparent range decrease. Cold temperatures are the Achilles heel of all EV’s.

Not a Gravity but I've parked my Air outside not plugged in for 3-4 days with overnight temperatures in the single digits and never lost more than a couple of % of battery charge.
I do not use the app nor do I precondition the battery nor the vehicle before use..

That’s part of your issue there tho. Short trips in winter consume large amounts of energy. Your car uses a great deal of energy to warm up and by the time it is warm or trying to fully get warm, you’ve already completed your trip.

This video is a pretty good explanation of it:

Saksak - I respectfully but vehemently disagree with you. As I've stated earlier post this is not my first EV . My first was mustang Mach e which, as all EVs suffered range loss in cold weather. It was disheartening to see such a range loss but nowhere near the extreme loss that I'm experiencing with this lucid gravity! Additionally the gravity has a heat pump which helps to offset battery discharge issues, as I was told by my sales tech consultant on top of researching myself. The MachE did not have such a heat pump and so any cold weather discharge would have been and certainly was more exaggerated than a vehicle with the so-called Heat pump.
You almost sound like a defense attorney who is CYA FOR lucid!

And you cant precondition the battery while it is plugged in. What is meant by preconditioning in this context is you heat the compartment up and the battery up while charging. If your battery is cold soaked from being out and not charging all night, it will be so cold, it wont even be able to charge properly until it heats up, using the plugged in energy to do so first , then it will charge the car. I had the exact thing happen to me this morning. Car outside all night, went to grab a coffee and charge at the level 2 charger across the street and it took my car about 15-30 mins to heat up before it started actually charging and dumping in energy. If your car is plugged in at night, and you know about what time you leave in the morning, you can schedule your car to start charging a few hours before you leave. That way, it’s sure to still be charging and “preconditioned” when you are ready to drive off. And any compartment heating you do will come from the charger and your battery can still have a nice high SOC when you are ready to unplug and drive.

Heat pumps have limited effect in extreme cold. They work by moving heat. When there is very little heat outdoors, they cant function as effectively. It would be the same as if you had a heat pump on your home system.

Thanks for the info. I stand corrected - we don’t get that cold here in CA but I do remember others reporting minimal parked power drain in cold temperatures. The data shows 4 huge drops, so something in the car was drawing power. The in-car parking data may have explained what was drawing power, but the data is probably gone.

@TMartz Can you monitor parking charge usage data and post if it happens again? It very well could have been a software bug that left something running.
