Gravity Bugs / Issues

Man you have my sympathies. I would likely have had a worse reaction. But grab a glass of wine, maybe get a massage, relax. Have hope that the 3.3.5 update plus fob firmware will bring back your beautiful car. Work your energy towards that. And please keep us updated.

I'd also document everything as the CEO would receive a copy of the details down the road, if it were me.
I agree with your advice....However, might I suggest he NOT get the massage in the car's massaging seats. Given his luck, the seats will probably catch fire during the massage while simultaneously experiencing a malfunction of the mechanical door handle release!

I'm going to reply to a couple of your points, not to be argumentative (I really do value your opinions), but in case someone at Lucid is watching this discussion so that they can better understand how this event unfolded and identify its cause(s).

The car unlocked automatically as I approached with the key fob in my pocket. It powered up as I was getting into the car, firing up all the screens, starting the A/C and the music I had been playing from my USB stick. I was squarely in the driver seat and took a moment to pull up another album from the USB stick. I then put my foot on the brake pedal to move the seat into position and put the car in gear. The instant I touched the brake pedal, the screens went black, and the A/C and music shut off. And they stayed shut down for over 20 minutes while I tried reboots, tried getting first Lucid central on the phone and then the Miami SC and then our mobile tech multiple times, and then finally calling my partner to come get me.
Yeah, this sounds like the fob. Basically, there are two “steps” and sensors for the fob; one that unlocks the car, and one that lets you put it into gear.

The fob failure is when the second one doesn’t “sense” the fob. I’m wondering if the unlock worked, but the fob wasn’t sensed for driving, and it just timed out.

Did you try relocking and unlocking? Or taking the battery out to do the fob reset? You might not have thought to, but just wondering.

I’m also not arguing, to be clear; I’m debugging.

I do not think it was a seal issue, at least at this stage. As I began to get hot while trying to do the reboots and call Lucid, I hit both front window switches simultaneously. Both windows lowered normally. When my partner arrived to pick me up, as I prepared to leave the car I tried to close the windows. Both windows were frozen in the fully-lowered position. After several more tries, the driver window finally raised about an inch and froze in that position. The passenger window didn't respond at all. As neither window was approaching the top of the door frame or even moving at all, I really don't think this was a seal issue.
Yeah, sounds right - that’s something else, possibly an artifact of the car being in an “unlocked but not drivable” state or something. I’m not sure.

However, after the car came back to life and I finally got both windows to go up and drove off, the passenger window dropped down about 1/3 of the way. That, I suppose, could have been because it had not properly sealed. And maybe, when it finally stayed up with repeated attempts while I was driving, the window finally seated correctly in the seal.
That’s precisely the symptom for a seal issue.

Apologist nonsense. As a car nut, I have been a buyer of first-generation cars for most of my life, and since the 1990's I have been having radar detectors hard-installed in them with nary a problem. This includes three EVs: a 2021 Model S Plaid and two 2022 Lucid Air Dreams.

The photos I posted of the Gravity opened up by the installer might have looked horrifying, but it was really nothing more than removing the frunk liner and the rearview mirror to gain access for wiring runs between the radar and laser sensors and the radar control unit. (I posted those photos simply because I thought other owners might like to see what was behind the curtains.) Other than a single power pickup off the dome lights near the rearview mirror, there was absolutely no interface between the radar system and the car's electronics. The radar system even uses its own speaker instead of running through the car audio.

The notion that the Gravity is too fragile to handle a radar installation does very little to increase confidence in the car.
I’m totally with you on this one.

It was a stressed enough day yesterday as it was. I had a 10:30 a.m. MRI that ran considerably late, making me tight for an appointment at a medical lab (which I was leaving when the car blanked out). Then I was supposed to get the car to the radar installer for a slot I had waited a month to get, but I was in a time pinch because my partner had a league tennis match. So I had to get to the installer in time for him to pick me up there before his tennis match. (This is why I had to cancel taking the car to the radar installer, as we ran out of time.)

A lot of people have days like this, many more often than I do. On those days, we need a car that just starts and goes when you're ready. No dicking around with waiting for screens to reset, no time to try reboots, no time to get out of the car and let it go through a sleep cycle hoping that will fix something, no time to wait on hold for a call to get picked up by a customer care rep if the other things don't work.

We have two Gravities, and they are not currently cars to be trusted on this kind of day. And having paid over $300K (with tax) for these two cars, I'm not particularly happy about not being able to rely on them even for running around town if staying on a schedule is part of the gig.

I've thought about getting an Uber account so that I can at least get home without tying up someone else's schedule, but we live in a semi-rural area a good ways outside of town, and I don't know if many Uber drivers would even take the call.
Not disagreeing with you at all. Like I’ve said on here before, I tend to do things on a fairly tight schedule just not to be wasteful of space. When I go to get in my car it should be able to start driving within seconds of me buckling my seatbelt. My car is having a weird issue where it often refuses to shift into Reverse. I can do Drive and Neutral, just Reverse is a problem. So I’m now backing into all my parking spaces BUT none of my cameras are working either. So two bugs that combine to be a bigger hassle than either of them alone.

I won't care that much if my Gravity needs a reboot in the afternoon/evening before I can drive it. But I'm not a morning person, and I time my alarm to wake me with only a couple of minutes of wiggle room. In the morning, I'd have zero tolerance for the car requiring me to wait around for it to sleep, or to reboot it.

Does Lucid test my patience? Yes. But, I am an early adopter and knowingly bought in here. Does NOT mean it’s fine to see folks experiencing all these issues. And communication has been crappy. And, at the same time, as an early adopter with Tesla and Rivian, the issues don’t surprise me. Totally sucks for those with drive unit issues or @hmp10 who should probably be beatified (though still alive!!) by Lucid for his patience and willingness to share, etc.

My experience has largely been the same as other owners. Early August delivery. Have almost 4,000 miles. 95% of the time the drives are uneventful. Agree with @HC_79 on his last post. Most bugs are just weird - like the air blowing at cat 4 hurricane levels when I get in. Really just an annoyance. But Lucid DOES have to get the key issues addressed asap.

Yes, I have fob issues but overall it’s an awesome car.

I also DO agree with @9point81 re: this is a bug thread. I post here about my insanely annoying fob issues. The fact I have the issues and I can’t get service appointments, etc.

As for issues over time getting better/worse. With 3.3.5 I have almost no false alerts - at least far fewer than before. I do think it is two steps forward, one back, as someone else said.

1,000% don’t regret getting the car. It’s absolutely amazing. Much like my marriage, lots of peaks and valleys, but overall, more peaks.

@hmp10 On the stop/start of music. I typically get a delay or weird pause only when using Tidal, which I attribute to massive bandwidth for Dolby Atmos and buffering.

Also, the car has a clear connectivity lag when switching from WiFi to lte. Rivian had this for almost two years before they addressed it. Not a huge deal, but noticeable as I pull out of driveway and then connectivity goes “dark” for 30 seconds to a minute.

I will say the LTE connectivity seems a bit more spotty than my Tesla and Rivian though I believe all use AT&T. I know most of the dead spots from our Tesla and Rivian, but there are more of them in the Lucid. That said, nothing crippling.

...all while the Sanctuary video plays in the background 😂

Yes, this one irks me to no end. I now just turn the HVAC off and on again but seriously Lucid, where is the QC! I feel the 3.3.x series has definitely been 2 steps forward 1 step back.

Cell phone coverage can be spotty where I live, so my default would have been to attribute both these incidents to cell dropouts, especially as both times they affected the Lucids we were each driving while following the other, and as the Air was one of the cars the first time.

However, both times I was playing music from my USB stick when the problem started. This caused me to switch to Tidal where I experienced the same problem. Also, this was not the usual symptom we get with cell dropouts where the music and the display of the selection just disappears and then comes back on its own when the cell signal comes back. In the recent incidents, the display of the selection stayed up but showed the vertical double bars of a pause. Tapping the screen or the wheel keypads instantly started the selection again every time.

The first time it happened a week ago, there was about a 20-30 second delay before the music paused again. In yesterday's incidents the music was pausing every couple of seconds for much of the drive, then later went to a longer interval.

Did you try relocking and unlocking? Or taking the battery out to do the fob reset? You might not have thought to, but just wondering.

I have had the fob time out before, but I have never had the door refuse to open except by the emergency release when the car powered down. Would a fob timeout have caused the electric door release to deactivate?

Once my partner arrived, I did get out of the car. But that caused the horn to start honking. Would that have happened with a fob timeout?

I have also done the battery remove/reinsert drill before, and I admit I did not think of it this time. I was already aggravated that the MRI appointment had run so late that I was pressed on the other things scheduled for the day, and when the car shut down in a way I had never experienced before with the Gravity or the Air and failed to come back after a several-minute wait, I had so much steam coming out of my ears that I probably wasn't thinking all that sequentially.

The Air has that huge lag also. I actually have just turned WiFi off in the Gravity, it can still download OTA data with 1 bar LTE which I usually have in the driveway so it’s ok.

Reading this thread makes me sorry, but not surprised. I had the greatest hope that Lucid would be the next great American car company. And I still have that hope. But after waiting for some word on a delivery of my Gravity, with zero information after 6 months, I decided to move on and leased a Taycan 4S CT. Not really very much more expensive than my intended Gravity. (Though not sure what lease terms might have been from Lucid. Porsche for sure does not offer any financial incentive.. maybe the opposite.) But Taycan after 5 years in the marketplace performs flawlessly.. (hopefully that continues.) Lucid, unfortunately as a consumer facing product seems flawed in so many ways. I was always afraid of that, but was willing to accept some risk to help a new American car company launch its product. Still hoping for that. Anyhow, the Taycan lease is over in 3 years, and I expect by then Lucid will have its act together, at which time I am hoping to retry Lucid.

Also worth mentioning is that the HVAC control for “Auto” often doesn’t respond the first 3-4 times you tap it, it just goes from greyed out which is off, to actually off, and doesn’t turn black (which I guess is “On?”), until tapping it many times, and the car always defaults to rear climate on. I actually don’t object to the rear climate on default though as if my kid is back there it would be worse if I forgot to turn rear climate on. Again it’s just an annoyance. I’m hoping once they get these gremlins subdued I can recommend the car to people, but as of right now unless I know the person to be a techy car person who’s ok with intermittent chaos, I don’t want to be responsible for enthusiastically saying “you gotta get this car!” and then watch them have lots of problems. Like if someone had a Gen 1 Rivian or earlier Model X then yeah they can probably cope with Gravity errata, but if someone is a first time EV owner and has a Subaru or Volvo that just worked or whatever, I don’t think it’s in the cards to explain to them how to do a steering wheel reset, how to troubleshoot fobs or lack of CarPlay AA and native Navigation taking them to the wrong location or knowing that some Tesla chargers don’t work or possible RDU failures or seat lying flat or windows not closing or black screens or HUD misbehavior or frunk not opening the first time you press the button (my frunk opens on the first try always), etc. I’m confident the car will get there but it stinks because the conversation we SHOULD be having is just “OMG THIS CAR ROCKS” and instead we’re having defective cars being tested on YouTube and Kyle even bagged his video cuz he got stranded in a parking lot not able to drive the car for 20 minutes and Tom’s range test was 100 miles off EPA cuz of RDU fail. The brand awareness is WAY bigger now, really great job on that end, but I’m worried about first time owners getting a peek behind the curtain and seeing all these issues. It’s hard to undo that damage, like nobody wants a Volvo EX90 now even though reportedly they fixed it.

This is not the case for me. It always starts off unless a human is back there. I think it is sensing whether someone is in the seat? I know because I manually turn it on for my 55lb dog all the time. Even though it constantly reminds me someone is there without a seatbelt as he’s just big enough to trigger the warning, I guess.

Ah I see, it’s because I have the kid’s car seat buckled in even though the kid isn’t in it.

3.3.5 software update and FOB update:
So far, visiting friends and family and no faraday box, I can say the fob is working excellent. The only thing I have noticed is the range is less and 'normal' for a fob. Also, the battery seems to last longer. When I was in bay area and the first two weeks of owning the Gravity, I replaced the battery twice. Now, after hte fob update and 3.3.5, the battery and range seems to be normal after 4 days - so far so good! Will give another update and either pass or fail at end of week. I am also running a week old battery too.

Just curious. Can you post the battery voltage? In all the discussion of fob battery death on the forum, I can only find 1 that someone actually measured and posted the voltage. Without numbers, I dismiss these posts as software issues.

Fob batteries should last a year or two, not a week or two. Just my opinion based on past 20 years of using keyless fobs.

I'd like to see that too. Obviously the battery would need to be removed to do so, which will re-initialize the fob. But it would be good to know the voltage on a 1-month old fob with the fix applied. I'd love ti cross off excessive fob battery use.
