On the PA turnpike today I saw a tall column of smoke on the horizon. I thought "
I hope that's not on the turnpike", then as I got closer and realized it was on the turnpike: "
I hope that's not a lithium battery fire". but the smoke was black so I knew it was likely petroleum.
Then a fire truck passed on the shoulder. Lots of heavy trucks started moving to the left as traffic slowed. Then I saw another fire truck speeding in the oncoming shoulder. Traffic started crowding-up but kept moving...I imagine that like me most were trying to get past the fire before they shut down both sides of the turnpike.
Turned out to be one of those Chrysler PT Cruisers fully engulfed in flames.

It was really burning well. It was in fact a glorious Valhalla-type fire.
Driver was standing about 20 meters away with hopeless look. It was cold and he was not dressed for it. I think he was warming himself by his car fire.
I had to smile = such an ugly vehicle and such an appropriate ending. Nobody was injured. It looked like he'd made it safely to the shoulder before it got really bad. It had a commercial wrap but too far gone to see what company it was. Pity = good advertising opportunity gone up in smoke.
I've seen a few car fires = every one gloriously and enthusiastically burning with nasty black smoke and orange flames. All of them ICE. Last one I saw was a newish BMW 5-series on Rt 80 near Allentown. They burn well! Again, driver was standing nearby with a hopeless, resigned expression. Again, no accident, just spontaneous combustion.
ICE vehicles= sometimes they catch fire for no apparent reason.
I tell people who ask me advice on EV fires : "
Don't be an idiot: hold your phone horizontally. "
Be happy that all you have are warning lights that there is a software glitch.
This is a feature, not a bug.
