I have driven hands-on lane centering systems for many years from different manufacturers and with those systems you were aware of their limitations and by keeping hand on, were ready to correct when needed. With hands off systems, there can be a significant lag in time between noticing system is having an issue and you grabbing the wheel. Also by having hand on wheel, you had immediate feel of if the car was about to do something it shouldn’t like not keep to lane on curve or change lanes. Fundamentally I don’t think that there is too much difference between hands-on and hands-off drive assist (as far as how the car is taking in sensor input and steering the car according to that input) other than with hands-on, the manufacturer is not supper confident in it’s capabilities and therefore wants you to keep your hands on wheel so you can quickly take over. With hands-off, the manufacturer is more confident in its system and therefore willing to give us more freedom. I understand that there will be times that the ADAS system in DDP2 hands-free will occasionally have issues reading lane lines, recognize construction or other confusing issues, weather, etc. and in these cases, give you a warning that hands-free has been terminated and you need to take control. That is the way it should work. But in my case above the car never gave me such a warning and seemed confident that it knew what it was doing, even though it’s sensors were telling it that it was steering the car over the lane line (as evidenced by showing my car over the lane line on the dash display). This does not appear to be a sensor or traffic condition issue but rather a software logic issue.
