41 State charge EV specific fees. The average is $145. While something should be paid for road maintenance, it should be usage based and comparable to gas taxes charged ICE vehicles. Luckily NY does not charge a fee.
 
These fees (in principle) are designed to make up for the gas tax that we EV owners are not paying to support highway maintenance/construction. In principle, I am OK with paying our “fair share”. But in many EV unfriendly states like here in Texas, the yearly fee is above what I would have paid via a gas tax for similar mileage.
 
No one is saying EVs shouldn't pay. But costs should be inline with other road users. The average State rax is $0.30, if a user drives 12,000 miles a year at 25mpg thats $144 per year.

EV users that drive less miles or own multiple EVs are overpaying.

This exactly. EV drivers are paying more than ICE drivers. The argument of weight is nonsensical because impact on roads by cars is marginal compared to trucks.
 
We should definitely pay tax for road use, yes, but not what they are going after. The gas tax has not increased since 93 and a VERY slight increase would make up for any deficit, along with a comparable tax on EVs. But no, less than 2% of cars on the road in the US are EVs, but lets charge them 10 times as much in taxes bc they are "heavy" The lifted Ford 350s, the ICE Escalades, Excursions or Ram 3500 dually, nah not heavy at all and need no taxing.

If we tax fairly across all vehicles for road use and weight, I'm all in, as I'm sure most EV owners would be too.
 
Illinois is $440 on registration, $160 for DMV license and $280 for road tax. The roads in Chicagoland just take a huge beating from frost heaves, but I don't see why they just don't require you to file your ODO on every yearly registration and charge you proportionally for the miles.
 
I pay an extra $200 on top of regular registration fees already in Texas. I also pay tolls for a ton of the highways I drive on all the time. In addition, I pay gas tax for my wife’s car, super high property taxes, sales tax….

The bottom line is no amount of our money is ever enough for any government and it is always easy to stick it the minority of owners, especially in an oil-addicted state like Texas.

A sensible idea and effectively equivalent to the gas tax (the amount of gas you buy is proportional to miles you drive).
 
It's only fair that we pay road use tax, but a flat rate fee is silly. Let your reps know.
