I’m on a road trip and selected a hotel with chargepoint chargers. I authorized the charger, it told me to plug in, and then after starting to try to connect, my Gravity said charge failed, use a different cable or call customer care.

Any ideas?

It should work fine, unless authorization failed or there's something wrong with that station.

Tried a second plug at the same station. Same result.

Supercharger had better work tomorrow…..

Sorry. I’ve had lots of very bad experiences with chargepoint across Tesla and Rivian so don’t use them anymore. Not even sure how they’re still in business.

The Tesla SC will work. Just used one today and was reminded of how amazing it is to plug and charge with NACS.

Yeah, I don’t know. I tried again this morning after a sleep and a hard reset, per Customer Service suggestion. I’ve now tried all four stations, all with the same result, but I know I saw at least two cars last night that appeared to be charging successfully (a Tesla and an American car I didn’t pay a ton of attention to).

Chargepoint app shows the session trying to load, and I can hear some clicks that suggest it’s trying, then the four lights hit red and the error message pops up and I’m done.

I guess it’s easy to shrug off Chargepoint as crap, but if others are using it and I can’t…..????

Fortunately I’m at a supercharger now. It’s working, if a bit slower than I expected. Station is rated for 250kw. It is busy though. Almost all slots full.

You’ll never get 250kw at an SC. About 150kw is my typical sweet spot - even with a Tesla. That’s just been my experience over the last 10 years or so. It’s still quite fast.

Huh. Thats disappointing. I’ve maxed out at about 135 for short spells, but was mostly at 125. I’m now trending down to <105 at about 65% SOC. Between getting much lower miles/kwh on this trip and needing a lot more time to charge than expected (2.63) this first road trip hasn’t been quite the ICE-rivaling beast that I expected.

Maybe I need a broken in battery, warmer temps, and better chargers.

Others may have different experiences with Tesla SCs, but I can’t recall any time I’ve come close to even 200kw in my Tesla at a Tesla SC, much less the Rivian or Gravity. But the lower your SoC, the quicker it will charge at first.

On a BP Pulse, I had mid 300kws well into the middle of the pack. It was amazing. Problem is, best I can tell, there’s on BP Pulse on east coast. At least it’s in MD!

Wasn’t the inverter magic supposed to make the Gravity achieve faster charging rates than a Tesla on the same charger?

Yes and I think it does at the same Kw coming from the SC because the Lucid battery chemistry is more efficient. I don’t really know how it works, but my Gravity charges faster than our X at the same SC even though the kw coming in seem to be close to equal. I do think the wunder box does something, but I thought it had more to do with the 900+ volt architecture on Lucid’s versus the 400v on Teslas.

Someone far more knowledgeable about the charging here in the forum will know…

It's because all DC fast chargers, including superchargers, are limited to a certain maximum current and voltage. Gravity allows the supercharger to output its maximum rated voltage, regardless of the car's battery pack voltage, so that the charging power (voltage * amperage) is maximized for a given maximum charging current.

In the case of a ~400V car like a Tesla, the charging station may be also maxed out on current, but is operating at the car's reduced battery pack voltage rather than the station's maximum voltage capability. So less power can be furnished.

Huh. I've ve never had problems at Chargepoints with Teslas, Fords and Volvo/Polestar. Including at their headquarters down the road from me. 🤷🏼‍♂️

In the first photo it looks like you are using the incorrect adapter for level 2 charging.
Holy crap. Right you are! Don’t I look and feel like an idiot. Thank you so much!!!!

Will try again tonight and report back but I definitely was using the wrong adaptor!

On a v4 charger, none of which exist get except in Redwood City, and those are limited to Tesla only for now.

But when that expands, yes. In the meantime, stuck with 250kW cap (like any Tesla), which is shared amongst stations based on usage.

Yeah, that’s definitely it.

Aside: Chargepoint still sucks. :p

Good news @WeighingGravity Just arrived at a Tesla SC - 8 stalls, empty except for me and I got 220kw. First time ever. It was great up to about 70%…

Okay. So there are 8 stalls and some buffoon in a Hyundai Ioniq parks right next to me! Crushed my KW. Come on, man. Learn about EVs before you effectively pull my plug 🤬
